Biggest Prospect Busts!

In the REAL ML, i think these are the BIGGEST busts....some i don't know that much about but i researched them
1. Todd Van Poppel-reason....Braves passed him and picked Chipper Jones and As got him and everyone laughed at the Braves for passing up the hottest pitcher who was supposed to dominate baseball
2. Brien Taylor-just researched about himmm
3. Shawn Abner
4. Ruben Rivera
5. Paul Coleman
6. David Nied
7. Bill Pulsipher
8. Paul Wilson
9. Jim Pittsley
10.Ben McDonald

Anyone got any real life players to add to list? or any of ur league prospects and tell us about them

Abner, yes...I'd agree with that. I'm from the same town he is, the Camp Hill/Mechanicsburg PA area...he now is a hitting instructor or something, offering his services in the want ads.

I saw Pulsipher throw a no-hitter against the Harrisburg Senators to knock them out of the EL playoffs in 1994.

I'll have to research some others, because there are several I'm forgetting...I played with a former first-round pick of the Phillies, Chad McConnell, on my old sandlot team...had to retire at 30 due to back pain. Didn't even make it through the entire sandlot season...I felt horrible for him.

I aggree with you, but not with Paul Wilson. When you pick a big prospect, 1/100 become what they were said to become..a star. But paul wilson is a decent pitcure, i dont think thats a big bust. You cant ever expect someone to be a star. Maybe you can expect somone to do well, but never become a star.

i hate the braves - i hope the mets beat them like bobby cox beat his wife - but no one laughed at the braves when they passed on van poppel - van poppel's agent made outrageous contract demands prior to the draft and basically stated that todd would pull a jd drew

Ah...Pat Jordan, another prospect bust. A "can't miss" with the old Milwaukee Braves...of course, he turned his experiences into two unforgettable books ("A False Spring", and "A Nice Tuesday", I believe). Both are books I highly reccommend.

From what I remember, Van Poppel had the scholarship from the University of Texas as his bargaining point, and more or less stated that he wasn't going to play for a "horrible team" like the Braves. The Braves were the laughingstock of the National League at the time, and Van Poppel figured he'd take his scholarship and not sign if a team that he didn't like drafted him. The Braves, scared off, went and drafted Chipper.

However, the A's (who had a pretty good team then) drafted him and got him to give up the scholarship to pitch in their system.

At least he didn't shoot his entire career down the toilet because of a bar fight.

Paul Wilson simply does not belong on that list. He got hurt, twice, and has come back and turned in to a servicable pitcher. None of the rest of the list could carry his jock.

we're not saying that van poppell wasn't a bust - he was a huge one - just refuting the "everyone laughed at the braves" comment.

joe charboneau is a stretch - guy won rookie of the year and got injured.

i'd say cory snyder (sorta), mark lewis (definitely), earl cunningham, roger salkeld would be candidates

Don Peters and David Zancanaro...two of the Oakland A's "Four Aces". Kirk Dressendorfer would be included but he had an arm injury. And the other Ace? -- Todd Van Poppel.

Gregg Jefferies was the most hyped prospect I can remember. He ended up being a very solid player, but never quite lived up to the superstar billing.

I could be wrong, but wasn't Cle/Atl Brad Komminsk regarded a can't miss prospect? Also, the White Sox pitching staff of the late 80's...Scott Ruffcorn, Johhny Ruffin.
