I love George's budget, just not his input. When he interferes with the baseball people we wind up with people like Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield and other players who are on their last legs when we should have younger players and not the old farts.

Quality people to wind up wit'. If I were a Yankees fan, I'd wish that RJ was still dealing for us, as it looks like he's gonna have a good year for the DBacks. He's still knocking off the rust and has a K/W ratio of 28/7 in 24 IP. Sheffield had two huge years for the Yankees out of three.

I never wanted Sheff or Johnson, or a bunch of the other guys they've brought in over the past few years. And much to my credit, since brining in these guys they haven't won it all either.

Johnson you just knew was getting older, and he is not nearly in the shape Clemens was in. Why give up the specs for an older SP as himself?

Sheffield, my argument at the time was you had Sheffield and Vladimir Guerrero both in free agency? Why in the world would you sign the elder of the two, when one was still young and had his entire career ahead of him? It was moves like that, that baffled me.

If you go back to the 80's, this was the exact problem. Bringing in older and/or unproven players for a bunch of money. As soon as George was suspended in the early 90's, the Yankees were able to build up there farm, let the baseball people run the daily baseball operations and build a competitive team.

As long as Georgie holds the purse strings and baseball people hold the reigns, I'll be happy

It does look like we're coming back to the model of the 90s rather than the 80s. It'll take a bit of time to make that transistion though.

Oh, it definitely does. I'm very excited about player like Cano, Cabrera and this crop of SP we've seen lately!

I think time is about to grant your wish anyway, thomamon. George will soon be "suspended" permanently because he himself is on his "last legs." This has been evident for the past year or two.

The problem is, his heir apparent is no longer apparent. That is, the guy who was running the team recently, giving Brian Cashman the flexibility and authority to do his job well, the guy who rightly supported Joe Torre last October, George's soon-to-be-ex-son-in-law Steve Swindal, is no longer in charge. My concern is whether either of George's two sons is capable, willing, and interested enough to own the team properly, even if that just means letting true baseball people run the team.

Well, I didn't say I want any harm to come of him.

If nobody wants the job, I'll gladly apply for it :-D

Seriously, I don't think we have much to worry about. It looks as if things are falling into place all on their own.

As long as Dolan doesn't get his hands on this team, I don't know if I care who owns the Yankees.

Just don't let it be Dolan.

LOL!

That's especially funny to me because I was thinking of adding exactly the same thing to my previous post, but forgot until after I submitted it.

It's exactly what I am worried about with the Steinbrenner boys running the team. Can you imagine a family idiot like James Dolan in charge of the Yankees? *Shudders violently*

It would be every over-the-hill vet's opportunity to play in New York or make a comeback.

Starting ChiSox pitcher is just 22 years old, 1-4 with 4.33 ERA but coming off a strong game against the Twins. Will he be what the Yankees need to awaken their bats, or will he shut them down? Ah, baseball, it never ends . . .

You have that feeling too? I know it does not make sense, but it feels like deja vu all over again for some reason.

Yeah, I just heard that from the lovely Kimberly Jones just now. I would not mind if they put her on to talk about the rain for an hour or two. That would be a fascinating topic, coming from her. Here she is:

Yeah, Kim Jones isn't bad. She sounded like a Mom when she had to correct DeSalvo about when he was gonna start.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. I thought he was going to start stuttering any moment. You think that was his first TV interview? Probably not, even though he's not Phil Hughes. Still, he looked clueless and she looked maternal and sexy at the same time.

1998Yankees, I finally decided to click on the links in your sig. I found this first statement on BaseballLibrary.com very interesting. I never really thought of it this way, but it was true at the time.

Joe Torre's 1998 New York Yankees had no superstars,
What a stark contrast to today's Yankees.

Yep, that's why I loved those teams. A bunch of average to above average players working together as a team to get the job done. They were a lot of fun to watch.

Well, recent Yankees anyway. Clemens notwithstanding, I think the team has moved away from the sins of the early 2000's.

That's why I chose them for my user name. Not just because they were so successful, but for what you just said.
