Actually, the Highlanders finished the second sim of the season (see below) in third place in the AL, and are flirting with their first .500 or better record.

SUPERBAS & RED SOX CRUISING

The Brooklyn Superbas continue to be, well - superb. The Brooklyn nine has rolled through the National League like an unstoppable force this season, piling up a 63-33 record, good for a six-game cushion on the much-improved Chicago Cubs (57-39). Over in the AL, the Red Sox are also looking like the team to beat. Their record sits at 61-35, good for a four-game lead on the Cleveland Indians. The gaps in both leagues between the second and third-place teams is large, with the NL's third-place team (Pittsburgh) sitting 12 games off the pace, and the Highlanders & Athletics, tied for third in the AL, at 14 games back.

THOUGH PITCHING IS KING, SOME HITTERS THRIVE

While the pitchers are - in general - having it all their own way these days, with the NL's composite ERA at 2.98 and the AL's at 3.09, with both league's hurlers holding opponents to a composite batting average of .248, there are some hitters who are still thriving. Among them - no surprise - is the 38-year-old Cap Anson (who has announced he will hang up his spikes after this season), batting .348, second-best in the National. The NL is led by the Cubs' Don Hurst, whose .368 average is the best in all of BaTTY. The American League is led by the Browns' John Kruk, who has been a poor man's Cap Anson his entire career. Kruk's career mark sits at .359 and, like Anson, he is on the downside of his career, as he is now 37 years old.

Among pitchers, Red Sox ace Fred Heimach has assumed the mantle of "best pitcher" which had been debatable since the heyday of Matt Kilroy in the early days of the league. Heimach's record stands at an unbelievable 20-2 with a sterling ERA of 1.53, following a 1909 campaign that saw him go 29-10 with a 1.61 ERA. Worse news for opposing batters? Heimach's just 24 years of age.

BOTH PENNANT RACES COME DOWN TO THE WIRE

1910 shall live in the BaTTY annals as one of the most exciting finishes ever. Both the National and American league races came down to the very end, and the winners were NOT the teams which had led since the very beginning. The front-runners in the AL, the Boston Red Sox, won 96 games - an outstanding total - but the Cleveland Indians roared back into the race and finished with 97 wins to cop the flag. Over in the National League the Chicago Cubs, who had run second to the Brooklyn Superbas since the start of the season, finally caught the Brooklyns down the stretch and both teams finished the regular schedule with 92 wins, forcing a one-game playoff, a wild 8-7 contest won by the Cubs at West Side Park.

The World Series shapes up as a good one, with both teams proving they are powerhouses. This race was so close that the league could have held TWO World Series this year as both the Red Sox and Superbas had outstanding seasons which fell just a tiny bit short.

Fred Heimach, like his team, fell just short (of 30 wins) by winning 29 and posting the best BaTTY ERA with a 1.86 mark. Cleveland had two pitchers put up great seasons as Joaquin Andujar (28-12, 2.20) and Vic Aldridge (24-10, 2.59) led the Indians to the pennant. Cleveland also posted the batting champion with Dave Orr (.344). The National League champion Cubs boasted the league's top hitter Don Hurst (.354). Pittsburgh's Jim Scott copped the ERA crown with a flat 2.00 average and Philly's Shane Reynolds won 23 to lead the league in that category, one ahead of the Cubs' Warren Spahn and Brooklyn's 22-year-old ace Bobby Mitchell.

I'm pleased too - it's nice to see a team come together and get some results. It was a little scary to see my 5th starter (due to injury) get the start in the playoff decider - but that worked out (barely).

Should be a good series - Cleveland and the Cubs match up quite evenly.

ORR'S BAT POWERS CLEVELAND TO COMEBACK WIN

There was little question who would win the Most Valuable Player Award for the World Series this time around. Cleveland's Dave Orr hit a whopping .515 against the Cubs, including a 3-for-4 day with a pair of runs driven in (8 for the Series) and three runs scored in the decisive seventh game. Orr's bat was the prime reason the Indians won three games in a row to capture their first World's Championship. The Cubs nearly had it all their own way, with a three-one lead in games they entered scored two in the top of the ninth in game five to take a 5-4 lead and retired the first two Cleveland hitters. With one out remaining, Jerry Terrell and Jim Lefebrve singled off Tom Edens, bringing - you guessed it - Dave Orr to the plate. An Edens wild pitch scored Terrell to tie the game at five and whip the Cleveland crowd into a frenzy. Orr then rifled Edens next offering into the gap in left-center, scoring Lefebrve and forcing a game six, which the Indians won in convincing 10-1 fashion (with an EIGHT run ninth) and ultimately the game seven triumph in which Orr's first-inning triple scored the first two runs for Cleveland who never looked back en route to a 5-3 win.

4 years in the league, 2 MVPS, 1 WS title and MVP, a ROY, 2 time batting title crown, the main cause of mass rioting in Cleveland after Game 7, and still a solid 8 in contact at age 28.

How very Cub -like... Congrats to Cleveland and especially Orr. We are hopeful to return to the promised land soon - and considering the solid group of folks we have enetering their primes - there is reason for hope in the Windy City.
