No Expansion Draft-- Just Curious

I'm wondering what would happen if I expanded my league and didn't check the expansion draft box...would the new teams be populated with new players?

Well, I tried it...not so great. The teams were created with coaches, manager, etc, but no players at all. Not sure where to go from here. I would imagine that these teams would have to sign everyone from the FA Pool. There's no great pickins there. Gonna revert to the backup.

I'm getting the feeling that I'm talking to myself here, but.... I just realized that there's an option to fill all rosters with fictional players. I suppose that I could have done that instead of an expansion draft.

I ended up doing the draft. The protected list was a good exercise. Now that all rosters have big holes in them, I'm going to fill them with fictional players.

This is probably the last entry in my little solo exploration of league expansion. Thank you all, and good night.

I have nothing to add and this goes against the little NL West vibe here but... um... Go Twins? Anybody? No? Alright then.

Go Whitefish!

But back to your point, your expansion teams are going to be horrible without the expansion draft to go with it. Unless your expansion teams are replacing a team that just folded. Then the FA pool is strong enough that they will sign a few quality guys to build on. Their roster will look quite similar to the team that just folded.

Filling the roster with fictitious players would seem to create people out of thin air. If your league is trying to be realistic than an expansion draft would make sense or allow them to do it old school and sign a bunch of old and crappy free agents.

Like you, I once had a conversation with myself on these boards. Unlike you, no one even bothered to respond. In fact, usually when I post in a thread, no one posts after me. Call me "Threadkiller".

OK, one last entry/question. I did the expansion draft, but I didn't have the patience to expand gradually. I added 4 teams to a 12 team league. Needless to say, this left every team in the league pretty depleted, and rather than completely empty the FA pool, I'm going to use the auto-create to fill the holes. Not the most realistic option in terms of the real world, but hey, it's my universe.

The question is will the auto create fill at league appropriate levels in the same way it did when creating the universe the first time? That is, will holes in AAA teams be filled with AAA caliber players and so on?

Looking back on history, when both leagues expanded by two or each league expanded within a year of each other, there are alot of bad players, not only on the new teams, but on your lesser sub .500 teams, over time, that should even out because talent will replace it.

Oh yeah

Just going to guess, but it's going to do the same thing it's done in all the previous versions. The teams will have to scrounge for FA, and be pretty bad teams for years to come.

Generally, expanding without a draft, and without manually putting players onto teams, will creat some really crappy teams. I just expanded without a draft where there were plenty of FAs floating around and both teams finished less than .300, one at .107. I'm going to use the draft from now on.

Well, my expansion teams- with a draft- are all at about .400 or less 2 months in. I still haven't filled in all of the rosters yet. I want to give the AI a chance to sign people from the FA pool before I fill them with fictionals. Every organization needs to be filled too. And I'm tired of picking through a bunch of 1 star FA's for my team. Fictional players, here I come.
