Low AVG, high HR guys

I still see a lot of players with 500-600 AB's with avg of .200ish and 30-40 hr's. One guy in my latest year batted .190 with 38HR's. That seems a bit odd to me. Just the fact that he had that many at bats brings up a red flag to me. About 1/3 of his hits were HR's and when he didn't get a hit he struck out (almost 200K's). I'm not really sure that he should get this much playing time.

Is this a league continued from OOTP4?

Old McGwire. Try McGwire before he retired. Trying to have one of the lowest averages with over 30 homers. I think he was at .150. It still amazed me how people would walk him even when he was hitting that low.

looks more like rob deer ;-)

i think in one year rob deer (det) had his first rbi single shortly before the allstarbrake. he had something about 40 rbi total at this time.

must love this guy, broke a rib while swinging.

I think this is handled fairly well in OOTP5. In OOTP4 you'd have way, way too many of these characters--all time home run kings with a .185 career average.

I guess overall, if something happens once in a blue moon that's unusual, that's great. When something weird happens too much (low avg/high hr batters, high bb/low era pitchers in OOTP4), then you have a problem.

There are way less than there were in OOTP4. I'm not complaining about the amount of this type of player, just the fact that they get 600 AB's. Even McGwire didn't get that toward the end. Just every hit was a HR......

I just saw a guy hit .138 over a full season and hit 35 home runs. Nope, that's not a typo. He walked a lot too and still only came up with an OBP of around .230.

Geez.... Rob Deer. That is a name I haven't heard in awhile! Oh, how I hated to see him come up to bat with runners in scoring position when he was with the Tigers, he was as close to an automatic rally killer as you could find. Eventually, they dumped him on the Red Sox and I think he ended his career with the Padres. I also believe that Sparky ended up batting him in the number 8 slot due to his inability to figure out what a "strike zone" was.

Another former Tiger, Darrel Evans, also hit for low average/high HR one year too- might have been 1986 but I'm not sure. He also walked a great deal which is something Rob Deer didn't do!

Hey don't forget Pete Incaviglia. Definitely was that type of player.

Also Dave Kingman.

And I believe Bob Horner?

I noticed why we are seeing less of these guys. Guys with average or fair hits andd brilliant homers don't develop and never get out of the minors. Jayson Werth is an example of it happening to me. he struggled and lost all his talent.

Didn't Rob Deer set the record for strikeouts in the AL?

I had a guy with 444 strikeouts. The only thing I adjusted was the injury tendencies which I set to low. That is incredible. The next closest was below 300...Not sure if it was a fluke or just that he played more since he was not injured. He had 404 the next season too....Just starting third....I have also seen a lot of players with low avgs with many Hrs. I actually prefer not to see guys hitting 60 Hrs with .340+ avg. I like the fact that there are few (hitting) HOF like all-stars so far that I see.

Bob Horner was not a low average hitter 270-300 till he got hurt.
