National Baseball League (historical 1919)
![]() - National Baseball League - Forum Link - Historical League (begin 1919 with full history imported) - OOTP 2007 Premise The year is 1919, baseball has been struggling with gamblers and other issues for years. Even some of the greatest players have been caught up with gamblers. Many of the rumors are false, but many of them are true. In addition, the newly modernized sport of football is beginning to garner more attention and is second only to baseball among American sports fans. Negro baseball is also gaining in popularity as teams pop up all over the nation. There has also been discussion of forming a Negro Major League. Major league owners have decided that something must be done to preserve this National Pastime and have brought in a young man by the name of Branch Rickey to be baseball’s first commissioner. Rickey was a major league player of little distinction and served in the front of office of the St. Louis Browns for a time, even taking a turn as manager. He went on to serve as an Army officer in WW I, having several major league players serving under him, and came back a hero with a baseball background, a strong academic foundation, and several radical ideas that were bound to save baseball and make it the massive success that the owners knew it could be. Rickey was willing to take the job but only on the condition that he be given absolute control of the game. The owners reluctantly agreed and signed Rickey to a lifetime contract. Rickey stepped in immediately prior to the 1919 season and set to the work of changing the game. He first broke the color barrier, stating that any player of any race or creed was welcome in America’s game. Secondly, he completely changed the national structure of the game by instituting the minor league system in which each team would affiliate with a team in a minor league in which players who were not quite of major league caliber would have the opportunity to learn new skills and improve those they already had. Rickey would associate with several burgeoning upstart baseball leagues to develop both a strong and unified major league in addition to spreading the National Pastime across this great land. Finally, he changed the front office rules by instituting the waiver system, the 40 man roster, player options, and the draft in which each team would have the opportunity to choose from among the best young players in the world rather than having them all go to the teams with the most money. Rickey would not be alone in this task, having surrounded himself with outstanding leadership in the league’s front office. Ban Johnson, formerly the American League President would function as the Vice Commissioner. Mr. J.L. Wilkinson, who had been a visionary in expanding baseball to different groups of people over the last decade, would serve as a consultant to Rickey in identifying talent to add to the revised league. The addition of Wilkinson was key because he was thought to be instrumental in organizing the proposed Negro League which would now be only a memory. In addition, Rickey had given Ring Lardner, editor of The Sporting News, free reign and full access in reporting on the league’s activities. Following a unanimous vote of American League and National League owners to merge into this new league headed by Rickey during the 1919 Winter Meetings, the league was dubbed the National Baseball League (NBL) on February 2, 1919. Expansion may occur as time goes on but is not guaranteed. League votes will be held the year prior to each historical franchise move or expansion. We will also consider adding the historical “third minor league” venture Continental League, which was expected to begin play in 1961 but did not, instead forcing baseball expansion. Rest of the Constitution This is a high quality historical league, with a dedicated Governing Board compiled with non-owners. We also feature TigerFan as the NBL's reporter.

All of our NBL original owners are already slotted. However, we need owners for the eight PCL franchises. These folks are first in line to recieve vacated NBL franchises that don't meet "owners goals" as designated by the Governing Board.
Please register for the forums and post in New Applicants if you're interested in joining this fantastic new league! Any questions? PM me here or in the NBL Forums.

This promises to be a top notch online experience. Recte can run a league and make a top notch Grand Slam Breakfast at the same time. That's a combination you can't find every day.
Highly recommended.

This is the greatest league ever! There hasn't been a late sim yet! I'm still in first place! No players injured! No players with development lumps! I love it!
What? We haven't done the first sim yet? Hmm...that explains a lot. Still, it should be fun.

I've filled Vernon. Just need two more. Who wants to get into what promises to be a premiere historical experience?

Is the PCL similar to managing a AAA team? I've tried managing lower-league teams in OOTP, and it almost seems like random luck whether your team wins or not . . .
If not, chalk me in for the Salt Lake City gig! I just applied to the forum and waiting for it to clear. |
