Request to whomever puts the cities.txt together...

For 2008 could you list cities by nation code first and then alphabetize within the nation coding? It is a pain in the butt searching through all of the cities trying to find the '206' of the United States. If all of the 206's were in the same place editing would be a snap.

If there needs to be some recoding by Markus to fix this, I'm fine with that happening to.

Thanks.

Import as a data file into Excel using a comma delimeter, sort by the column with the nation code, edit away, sort back, save, done!

Thanks. I know. But for those that don't have excel (me) or have a version of excel that doesn't allow the whole list to be show (me, previously) there is no easy way of doing that. It would also cut down on alot of unnecessary importing.

Open Office. Nice free spreadsheet program in that.

OpenOffice and Excel spreadsheets do not allow for a file the size of cities to be loaded so I made a copy of the original cities.txt, renaming it cities_sorted.txt using ACCESS. If anyone is interested in it I will send it to PadresFan site for upload. If you NEED it before the 15th when PF returns PM me and I may be able to email it to you. It is a whopping 1.3MB in compressed zip format.....

The file sorts the cities by coutnry code, then alphabetically by city. If there is an interest in the States as a nation cities.txt file to be in this format I will do this one also (only if there is interest in it...)

Enjoy!

Steve

I am told that the new Office 2007 is supposed to be able to open a spreadsheet with more than 65000 lines. cities.txt is more than 90,000.

I just got a new computer with just Microsoft Works... I'm at work so I can't remember if I have an Access sort of thing... but as a whole this sounds awesome and exactly what I'm looking for.

Even better than using Access or a new and improved version of Excel or Open Office... TextPad. Search for and download TextPad. You can open a file of any size, sort by any column, do block selections and anything else. The only capability it doesn't have is functions, which are useful in Excel. But for any plain text editing you could possibly need to do, TextPad has the answer. And it's free as long as you don't mind the annoying pop up that reminds you that you're only using an evaluation version.

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

1048576 seems to be the last row in my copy of Excel 2007 and it goes across to column XFD (16384)

In world.dat the cities are in population order inside each country, which leads to another question - the population figure that gets populated in the nations.csv file is just the sum of the relevant population figures from cities.csv for that nation. I can't remember what Markus/Marc said but I think the list of cities is only those with a population of over 1000 so nation populations are being underestimated (there's a lot of hamlets around where I live)

We rave about it at work non-stop. We work with a LOT of data (hundreds of thousands of lines, 200-600 columns), and it's never failed us. Liked it so much, we actually paid for a few different licenses!
