Finally, I've got the User Manual for the game, which mostly explains the mechanics. It references a "Reference" section, which I haven't seen. Where do I go to find out the difference between blue stars and yellow stars (and green clovers...no, wait...that's Lucky Charms), how the arbitration rules work and the like?
Check under financials in the manual. Also, you can set the browser to use Internet Explorer instead of the in-game browser. It will allow you to go back and forward easily.

Also, the blue stars are for prospects or players with very little experience. Yellow stars are veterans or players with a full year or 2 of experience.

I actually know what the stars represent, my point is that there should be some way other than the message board to find that out.

Does the manual tell about openingin IE instead of the game? I noticed when I right-clicked and then hit "Open in new window" I got an IE window instead of an OOTP window, which surprised me (not in a bad way). Again, assuming I hadn't found at least that much out by accident, why should I have to come here for the information.

Its a great game, it just needs more documentation. I'll be happy to RTFM when there's a decent FM to R.

Oh, and the only reason I knew where the manual was located in the first place was because someone mentioned it on another MB. I don't see any mention of the URL within the game. For whomever said "Wow, I wish Microsoft ran this way", at least they have a help file when you hit F1 in their programs.

It is on the OOTP5 web site. You have to go there to get the game.

I'll concede that I just hit the "buy it now" and bypassed the rest of the front page, so scratch any complaint on that front.

Why are the players current season stats on the bottom row and last seasons stats on the top row now?

I'm used to seeing it the other way around, and the old way seems like the natural way to do it anyway. Can you change this back?

People read readme files? Seriously, I've already conceded I was wrong about access to the manual. That doesn't change the fact that the manual is good at giving the basics of game operation, but is woefully lacking in explaining the nuts and bolts.

I'm not knocking the game, because I love it. I'd just rather not have to find out so much by trial, error and asking in a forum like this.

Thats why they call them readme files . In fact thats the place you should look for most games in case there was stuff added after the manual was sent off for printing.

I agree that their could be a lot more detail in the manual but almost every game is like that. On the other hand an 8 year old could figure out 95% of whats in the manual.

Damn...I only figured out 87% of it...what does that say about me?

It just seems to me important things were left out of the manual. Arbitration is a big new feature, and there's no guidance to how it works.

The yellow and blue stars are semi-obvious, and a newbie might think a 5 blue star means the same as a five yellow star.

The manual talks about a Reference section, and I didn't see one. Maybe I missed something, maybe its name was changed at the last minute and they didn't update the file. Whatever the reason, it led to confusion.

My request would be to update the manual and make it more robust as the program is updated...or when the initial updates slow down, have someone prepare a fully detailed manual.

This is under financials in the manual I think. I looked for it also and found it there.

Players are up for arbitration once you hit proceed. If you wish to not arbitrate a player you can release him at the end of the season without any penalty. If not, the player is arbitrated by the OOTP5 arbitrator.

I'm a tech writer, if one is needed for the OOTP5 manual rewrite.

I can give references and send a resume to .400, if needed.

Skimming through the manual, I thought that the manual was ok, but it could be better. Maybe I'll write my own anyway and post it somewhere on someone's site.

Would anyone be up for that?

The manual was a bit on the thin side....

I miss having the data base to go find info the easy way

Except in this case, the manual is not in a physically printed form, it is solely electronic in nature.

Which means that it could in fact be continuously updated, right up until the last moment, since there is no long lead time needed as there is for a printed manual.

The manual is okay, but I too would like to see far more detail included in it. I just personally prefer to have all the nitty gritty spelled out, rather than have to figure things out as I play.

Others, of course, prefer the reverse method...

Well its not in the manual because its an Internet Explorer "trick".. There should be a back button on the screen, or better yet, reports that have links should generate child windows.
