Because Sluggerrr says there needs to be one...

A fantastic start to the season! Gil Meche looked like a guy worth all that money for at least one game. They produced some runs, Tony Pena Jr. hit a pair of triples, and they won despite a lackluster start from heralded rookie Alex Gordon.

1-0. A perfect season to date!

As a Mariner fan, I will admit that he looked great from time to time when he was in Seattle. I remember a year, I think it was 2003, where he would outduel some great pitchers, including Roger Clemens in Yankee Stadium. Gil's biggest problem was the same problem that Freddy Garcia had in Seattle. Inconsistency. I really hope Gil can get it straightened out, because I met him once and he is really a nice guy.

I would not be surprised to see the Royals fighting until the end for a playoff spot.

I hope you were being sarcastic. In a division with Minnesota, Chicago, and Detroit... not to mention Cleveland? Not a chance, and I'm from Kansas.

It was an impressive opening day though.

In a different division, maybe. I think Meche is going to end up being a pretty decent signing and I think the lineup is going to be pretty good, especially if the kids don't regress or go cold too often and The Captain stays healthy. But I think the lack of pitching is going to do them in...

OK, I was exaggerating a bit.

I would be surprised, but far less surprised than if they did it last year.

I went to an Oakland A's-Royals game at Kaufmann about 6 years or so ago, Sluggerrrrr, was throwing out t-shirts from the top of the dugout. I'm sitting right in front of him, waving my arms like a maniac, yelling "Throw me a shirt, Sluggerrrr!!!"

He looks at me with that dumb lion head, and DOESN'T throw it at me.

Then a few years later, at another game at Kaufmann (is there two or one M?), he had the nerve to pat me on the shoulder as he walked by.

Jerk.

Well I am happy with opening day win. I only want a winning record after April ends. (for that matter after May ends.. )

But, it bodes well for the team to beat the Rascally Red Sox. Nice to start the season with a solid win.

I was gonna start a thread like this. The Official KC/Ross Gload undefeated season thread and it's off to a great start.

I predict the Royals will start 81-0 and off to an amazing lead in the AL Central. In the second half, they will lose 81 straight games. The media will blame this on youth and inexperience, but we all know it will be because the Royals did not treat The Gload correctly and he will do it to prove the Gload giveth and the Gload taketh away.

I would love to see the Royals return to glory. The Yankees-Royals rivalry is something I remember fondly growing up. Every time George Brett stepped to the plate, my heart stopped. I still remember watching Dan Quisenberry pitch. Willie Wilson, Frank White. Those were some fun years.

Those were some quality teams matching up then. I know the Yankees/BoSox has the history, but, man I hated watching their bullpen stopper Gossage come in to stop another Royals rally. I too held my breath many times when Brett got to the plate.

Hopefully Glass will allow the new GM to work his magic. I know it is a new feeling there in KC off of I-70!

The new stadium will make things really nice as well. Can't wait for that.

When does the new stadium open? I've always wanted to see a game in Kaufmann, so I'll have to try to get down before it closes.

I have more memories of the Royals vs Yankees than I do Red Sox vs Yankees (other than Dent's HR ).

I'm a big fan of Kaufmann Stadium. I'll be sorry to see the Royals play somewhere else, especially since it remains a beautiful, baseball-only, ballpark.

EDIT: Wait a minute. Aren't they just renovating the ballpark? I remember when the Jackson Co. vote occured, I thought they were just going to do massive renovations at Kaufmann. Are they actually building a new stadium? That really seems unnecessary.

I agree, Kaufmann is a incredibly beautiful place to see a game. I remember there was talk of building some kind of retractable roof for Arrowhead a while back because Kansas City wants to host a Super Bowl, but I don't remember what happened with that.

4/4 - vs. Boston Red Sox

Well, looking like the Royals will take a loss in this one, down 6-1 in the seventh. 5 innings pitched, 4 runs allowed by Odalis Perez.

Wunderkind Alex Gordon looks like he's got the jitters, or he's simply a bit overmatched. I imagine it is the former but hope he stars rolling soon.

EDIT: Oh, and The Gload a spectacular 2-for-2 with a walk thus far...
