Enabling financials/No free agency problem

I am running a historical sim of baseball starting in 1901. Prior to the sim I enabled financials, but on the button that says minimum years I clicked "No free agency."

Later in history, when free agency comes into play, I wanted to change the settings. I then realized that this is not possible.

Is there anyway in a future patch, we could fix this? Thanks.

It should be possible in the pre-season...

It is not possible, unless the game recognizes it historically, and it will change when I get to the correct year. Does anyone know? I do not want to sim an entire history, and not be able to enable free agency when the time comes. Thanks.

Make sure that you are in the off-season or pre-season. You are blocked from changing league or global settings at any other time. It should let you do what you want at that proper time.

Just to follow-up on a related issue, when doing an historical sim, the game changes some things (adds the all-star game, for example), but doesn't change many, if not all, of the roster rules. So, you need to manually enable the Rule V draft in 1933, the player draft in 1965 (unless you want to continue placing players on their correct teams or are already using the draft), arbitration in 1973, and free agency in 1976. There are a couple more, like waivers, 40-man roster, etc., that I don't know, but there probably needs to be some explanation in the manual of what the game automatically does and what you need to change to be historically accurate.

I am in the offseason, or preseason, and it would not allow it.

My question is for anyone that may know, does the game automatically switch it in 1976 or will it never allow free agency because I disabled it prior to starting the game?

The answer to your question is no, the game will not automatically change it, but yes, the game will allow FA to be toggled on even though you disabled it prior to the start of your game. I have done this with 12 different historical sims I have run since I bought this version of the game. It works.

When I go to the game setup and go to click on the financials, the "allow financials" is checked, but the no free agency is in black and cannot be changed.

Okay, I got it to work. I had to sim to "pre-season" from "off-season" Thanks for your help.

As you noted, the game does not make such historical adjustiments to the various league rules. I did raise that idea during beta testing, but it didn't get much traction at the time, probably due to more important things to work on.

Also, to nitpick, the Rule 5 draft was around before 1933, albeit in a somewhat different form (as with a number of other league rules, such as trading and options).

An area I intend to work on for possible inclusion in OOTP2008 is more and better recreation of the older major league rules. There were a lot of differences in how the leagues operated then and how they operate now. That said, finding exactly what those older rules were is a bit of a challenge...

That sounds good. The best several of us could come up ith over at FOFC was 1933 for the Rule V draft, but that was just based on what we could document from various online sources.

For an overview of the past MLB operating rules, go to this web site and hit the "League Operating Rules" link. From there, choose the area you want to read up about (e.g. roster limits, waivers, trading, etc.).
