Fictional League Enjoyment Level

I am new to OOTP and have put the demo on hold so far because I did not want to play with fake players. However, the more I think about it, the setup of the game with the inaugural draft is actually quite intriguing, and I may just give it a shot. Just wondering what other people think of the fictional league compared to using a real roster set?

I much prefer fictional players to "real" rosters. Fewer preconceptions about how players "should" perform, and more flexibility to create a game world that I want to play in.

I concur. Even back in the days of Earl Weaver Baseball I used fictional players. Of course people do look at you funny when you start talking about them as if they were real. They just don't understand the bond that can be developed. It's like a pet.

agree. the beauty of OOTP is it creates a new history or baseball storyline. I don't get caught up in the fact that Cal Ripken Jr doesn't play everyday or Tim Wakefield can't pitch consecutive days or anything like that. And really after 5-10 years of a sim, Chris Allerdyce is just as familiar to me as Carlos Beltran.

Count me among those who prefer fictional players to real players.

For an eloquent testament on how both historical and fictional leagues can be *very* compelling, check out the Dynasty Reports Forum. Plenty of inspiration no matter what your taste is!

P.S. for the record, I'm currently playing a fictional league, but I do play both.

Fictional is the only way I enjoy playing any sports sim.

I most often go with fictional players.
Fictional players allow the greater possibility of really discovering new talent. If my scout looks at a real life legend and gives him a poor potential, I know my scout is off base. However, with fictional players I have to really become familiar with my scouts, keep them employed long enough to track their success, and learn who I can trust.

Fictional is the best. Period. Anybody else who says different is wrong.

So, get into the names files and change 'em!

How else do you think we got players like "Fuzzy Bunnyslippers" and "Bork Badgerdicer"?

Um...probably not helping, re:stupid names, eh?

The beauty of it: You can edit names.

Not wanting to derail the conversation too much, but I haven't seen what you're talking about. What stupid names is the game generating?

Because it's completely fictional. You could envision an Amish league where the only first names are John, Amos, Samuel, Daniel, and David, and the only surnames are Stoltzfus, King, Fisher, Beiler, and Lapp, and then you could actually do that. Sure you'd have a billion duplicate players, but still, it's possible.

The thing is, a lot of work was actually put into making sure that the names generated were pretty believeable and nothing too crazily uncommon (like a guy named Timothy Williams, but he's from Thailand).

Still, I know that 100% proofreading wasn't possible. There will definitely be names that slip through the cracks, but that's part of the fun.

As an aside, what kind of weird names are you getting?

I guess it's not mainly the actual names,it's really more the nicknames that get in the way. By themselves, the names would probably be passable, but with all these "Twinkle Toes" and other stupid nicknames getting in the way,it becomes ridiculous. I wish there was a way to disable nicknames all together.

Easy-as-pie! The nicknames are in a separate nicknames file. Just edit it and add more or get rid of them all (just don't delete the file).
