June 2000:

June was a good month for Nomar, he batted .333 with 6 homeruns and 22 RBI. He walked 12 times and had an OBP of .426 (The 1st month he was over .400) and a SLG% of .570 (His lowest of any month this season) having only 4 doubles and 0 triples.

So far this season Nomar has done better on the road, batting .347 with 9 HR, a .431 OBP and .607 SLG%. At home however he's batting just .299 with 11 homers, a .357 OBP and .584 SLG%. He has also stolen all 7 bases this year on the road (in 7 attempts) while being caught twice at home with no SB to show for it.

Nomar's season totals are as follows.

.322-20-55

.395 OBP - .595 SLG% - .990 OPS

32 BB - 13K - 19 2B - 2 3B - 61 R - 94 hits in 304 AB.

Other Notes:

The Red Sox are 2 games behind Toronto for 1st and still have no real ace. Pedro Martinez has been just good, while Sox fans want him to be great. He's just 8-4 with a 3.45 ERA this season, already with more losses and more earned runs than last season.

Rich Garces is 3-1 with a 1.05 ERA in 34.1 innings leads the bullpen which has been very good so far this season.

On the offensive side of things Sox DH Reggie Jefferson cooled off some in the month (.295-1-19) but continues to be the team leader in batting avg (.326) to go along with his 9 homers and 43 RBI.

Jason Veritek and John Valentin continue to struggle, while Jose Offerman made vast improvement last month (.356-2-13) to bring up his season stats to a respectible .283-5-28 along with 8 SB and 0 CS.

League Leaders

Currently the ML leader in avg is MIN 2B Todd Walker, who's hitting .366, followed by CHC 1B Mark Grace at .362, and ATL RF Bernie Williams at .356. Nomar is tied for 13th with .322.

When it comes to homers Chicago's Sammy Sosa has been the man, hitting 34 long balls, followed by Greg Vaughn of Cincinnatti at 26, and a tie between STL 1B Mark Mcgwire, and ATL 3B Chipper Jones. Garciaparra is 15th in the majors and 7th in the AL with 20.

Kris Benson of PIT leads the majors in ERA with 1.92, followed by ATL's Kevin Millwood at 2.34 and a tie between MON ace Javier Vazquez and John Smolts at 2.35. The AL is lead by two Toronto starters, Joey Hamilton (2.78), and Greg Maddux (2.88) numbers 1 and 2 respectivly.

All-Star Game:

This years all-star game was taken by the American League, who's winning pitch was starter Pedro Martinez who went 3 innings with just 1 ER. Derek Lowe also pitched, going 2 innings and allowing only 1 hit and no walks or runs. Kevin Millwood was the NL starter, he went 3 innings as well but let up all 4 AL runs himself and was the losing pitcher of the night.

Juan Gonzalez picked up 2 RBI, while Manny Ramirez and Ivan Rodriguez both got 1. Garciaparra went 1-5 with a run scored.

July 2000:

July was a tough month for Nomar, he batted just .300 with only 3 Homers and 3 doubles (no triples for the 2nd stright month) but had 16 RBI.

His .333 OBP and .433 SLG were season lows, as were his 90 AB and 23 games (mostly due to the all-star break). His 14 runs scored were also a season low, however he did manage a season high 4 SB being caught once.

His season stats are as follows:

.317-23-71

.381-.588-.939

22 2B - 2 3B - 75 R - 38 BB - 17 K - 11 SB - 3 CS

125 Hits in 394 AB

Other Notes:

During the month SP Juan Pena (9-6 4.48) was injured 5-6 weeks (3 reamining) with a torn tricep. SP Pat Rapp (3-6 5.28) was injured 1-2 weeks (no healed) with with a strained elbow ligiment. Also 1B Brian Daubach is day-to-day (1 day left) with a sore back.

Martinez had a good July, he went 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA and .198 opponent batting average. He is 12-4 with a 3.21 ERA on the season.

Rich Garces pitched just 9 innings and allow 11 ER for an 11.00 ERA and a 1-1 record. He is now 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA.

Derek Lowe continues to be reliable with 28 saves and a 2.16 ERA.

Boston's record this season is 55-47, they are 8 games behind Toronto for 1st and remain in 2nd just 1 game up on Baltimore. They are currently leading the Wild Card race with Baltimore just 1 game behind and Kansas City Just 2 back.

August 2000:

Well August is over and the Sox are happy to see it go. They have fallen a game behind Baltimore in the AL east for 2nd place as well as in the wild card, which now seems to be a two team race with KC falling to 6 games back.

With the possible exception of Nomar Garciaparra, who batted an impressive .384 to go with 8 doubles and 4 triples. He also had 4 homers, 20 RBI, and 19 Runs. His 43 hits and 12 walks in 112 AB help him get a season high .441 OBP, he also had a season high .634 SLG%. In addition he had 5 SB and was not caught once.

On the year Garriciaparra's stats are:

.332-27-91

.394-.575-.969

30 2b - 6 3b - 94 R - 50 BB - 20 K - 16 SB - 3 CS

Against Lefties Nomar is hitting .460 with a .534 OBP, while he's been hitting just .305 with a .363 OBP against righties.

Other Notes

Pedro Martinez had a terrible Month going 2-3 with a 4.74 ERA.

However Pedro was given a 6 year extention worth 11.4 million a year.

29 year old Rich Garces (5-2 2.87), was given a 3 year contract worth 4.56 million a year to stay in Boston.

DH Reggie Jefferson (.322-12-64) was offered and accepted a 3 year extention with the Sox worth 2.66 million a year.

33 year old SP Pat Rapp (3-9 5.27) was also given an extention by the Sox. He was signed to a 4 year deal worth 2.855 million a year (equal to what he is currently making.

Doug Glanville has had a rocky 1st year in Boston (.242-12-42), however Boston's GM has made sure it wont be his last, extending the contract of the 30 year old LF for 3 seasons a $1,710,000 a year. Glanville came to Boston in the off-season from the Phillies for Ramon Martinez (10-10 4.76 this season), who was also given an extention by his team the Phillies for 3 years at 3.876 mil a year.

33 year old 3B John Valentin may not be what he used to (hitting just .180 with 8 HR, 34 RBI, and a .221 OBP), but the Red Sox have awarded him with a 3 year contract extention. The contract is said to be worth about $1,520,000 a year and will last 3 years.

Bret Saberhagen (9-5 4.17) and Tim Wakefield (6-9 4.84) are the major free agents that have yet to be resigned.

September \ October 2000:

Well the season is over, it ended with Boston and Baltimore tied for the wild card forcing a 1 game play-off, I'll get to that later.

Nomar's September Stats:

.309-2-11

.350-.545-.895

7 Runs, 7 doubles, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 SB, 0 CS.

Nomar's October Stats:

3 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 SB, 1 CS

SEPT\OCT

.274-3-13

.326-.476-.802

10 R, 8 2B, 6 BB, 7 K, 3 SB, 1 CS

Season Totals
This Season (LAST SEASON)

.324-30-104 (.372-38-120)

.385-.561-.946 (.429-.678-1.107)

38 2B, 6 3B, 104 R (34 2B, 9 3B, 117)

56 BB, 27 K, 19 SB, CS 4=82.6 (50 BB, 32 K, 20 SB, 6 CS=76.9)

660 PA, 590 AB, 191 H (599 PA, 543 AB, 202 H)

331 TB, 74 EBH (368, 81)

When comparing his stats to last years MVP season it almost makes him look bad. However a .324 avg and 30 HR is not an easy task.

Wild Card Play-off

With Both Boston and Baltimore tied at 84-78 a one game play-off was held in Boston to determine who would advance. The game pitted Boston's Juan Pena (12-11 4.91) fresh off a 4 start losing streak, against Baltimore's Scott Erickson (15-9 3.42).

Pena went just 4.1 innings allowing 8 runs, 7 earned on 10 hits and a walk. While Erickson went 8.1 allowing just 2 ER off 5 hits and a walk.

Nixon tripled, and Garciaparra stole a base (while going 0-3), Veritek had both the teams RBI. Charles Johnson and B.J. Surhoff both homered for the O's.

Final Score: BAL 10 - BOS 2
W- Erickson
L- Pena
PotG- Erickson

Other Notes:

Tim Wakefield (8-13 5.00) was signed to a 2 year deal worth $4,115,000 a year.

Derek Lowe tied for 5th in the majors in saves with 40 to go along with his 3.24 ERA, which ballooned in September and Oct from 2.25.

Rich Garces was 7-3 with a 2.91 era in his team leading 73 appearances.

Pedro Martinez finished the season at 17-9 with a 3.15 era well below the teams lofty expectations.

After His all-star season last year, it appears that Bret Saberhagen may have pitched his last game as a Red Sox. In 2000 he went 9-5 with a 4.14 era in 28 starts. In his 3 full seasons in Boston Saberhagen went 42-17 and made 90 starts.

Brian Daubach, in only his 2nd season, reached 30 HR for the team lead along with Garciaparra. Daubach batted .254, had 108 RBI and 43 2B (a team high), as well as 90 runs.

Butch Huskey was the team leader in RBI with 114, he batted .266 and had 28 homers.

Down in the Minors Starters Brian Rose (12-6 3.14 in AAA, 2-4 5.27 in majors) and Herbert Lummus (13-4 1.84 in A, 10-3 2.43 in AAA) could have jobs on the major league club next season.

3B David Showers (.224-37-84 in AAA) and 3B Wilton Veras (.313-13-45 in AAA) could also see action next season.

League leaders, play-off results and awards will be posted later tonight.
