Impressions thread for people who really, really didn't like 2006

At the risk of getting flamed...

I really didn't like 2006. I couldn't enjoy the game at all. And I'm not one of those 'I just want 6.5 with bug-fixes' types. I just thought the new UI was terrible and that most of the features in 2006 were not thought out or implemented properly in the way that made a fun game. I've spent 100s of hours on OOTP since version 3 or 4, and I'm also a big Football Manager player as well.

With all that out of the way, I really, really want to like 2007. But I feel burnt by last year's version, badly, and I didn't sign up for any of the pre-order discounts because 'fool me once, shame on me...'

What I'd like is for this thread to be a place where people who felt similar disappointment in 2006, but bought 2007 can post their impressions. My hope is that these will be positive, enough so that those of us who were on the fence can feel comfortable making the leap to 2007. But I'd obviously what I want is real, honest impressions, and hopefully thoughtful ones as well (no 'It sucks' or 'It rocks' knee-jerk stuff).

I am with you on that but from what I have heard other people talking about is that it is a lot better than 2006. I still pre-ordered anyways cuz I would play it even if it sucked..

I'll wait for the "people who didn't like 2006" thread. I never got to the "really, really" point - it's difficult to provide specific details, but after the first dozen hours messing around with it, it never was the game that I'd boot up when thinking about what to play.

This day is going way too slowly at work. I should be playing 2007 right now.

In short I've been with OOTP since Version 3, so I've seen 3, 4, 5, 6, 6.5, 2006, and now 2007. Each and every upgrade, up to and including 6.5, I defended aggressively. When 2006 came along, I couldn't bring myself to defend it, even though I knew it was a work in progress.

But, 2007 is what I was expecting 2006 to be and more.

I don't think it's possible to be disappointed in this game if you liked anything about the versions before 2006.

It may be an improvement and an ok game but it will be days before i am ready to play. it still appears a little too complicated - but maybe with a few answers it will come together.

How is it complicated?

You do know about the in-game help feature, right?

I'm still a little wary since we won't know about the AI until at least a week or so into the game's release. I gave up on 2006 for a long time after there were so many wild pitches/passed balls - it made it very difficult to immerse yourself when every other at-bat with a runner on base you're yelling "Man, come on!" But the latest patch solved that and other quirks of game logic and AI managers' logic and wasn't such a bad game. I would like to believe that 2007 AI is a continuation from the last 2006 patch AI with nothing but improvements, but I can't help but be cautious. If anyone who has the game wants to comment on the AI, I think a lot of us fence-sitters will feel much better and drive us to buy the game and sit inside staring at a computer despite the suddenly incredible spring weather (here in Jersey at least).

I hated 2006. It was public knowledge.

This version is so far ahead of 06 and, IMO, is the game that everyone expected 06 to be.

That is a quote they should put on the main page, since you said it.

No computer baseball game will ever have 'perfect' AI. But I can say with confidence that the AI in OOTP 2007 is better than ever. Please keep in mind that no other text-based game has to handle as many options & rules as OOTP, it is the most complex game on the market, and thus has the most complex AI by far.

Then I would suggest checking out the Demo tomorrow, and watching the comments here for the next week.

Well, you'd be able to answer this better than anyone else, Markus. Where did you pick up the AI development for 2007? The in-game AI was pretty good by the last patch of 2006. Was the AI programming carried over from 2006 and improved upon, or was it started over from the beginning? I've read a lot about GM AI (sign and release in particular) but not a lot about the in-game AI. Vielen Dank!

Yeah, I'll definitely check out the demo. After Civ IV and OOTP 2006 I don't think I'll ever just buy a PC game off the shelf anymore.

The AI in all areas was improved, parts of it even rewritten (player evaluation for example, which uses flexible amounts of stats).

Tomorrow there will be a demo released, so you can find out for yourself
