Real Players and Feeder Leagues

Anyone have any ideas on how to use only real players but also incorporate feeder leagues??

Thats a great question. I'd like to hear this one as well. Is it possible to import a file into the feeder leagues? Similar to what we used to do from Lahman to create a draft class? If we can do that, the only issue would be players would be too old, but how sweet would it be if someone made a mod to import major leaguers at 16 to play a few years in the feeder league prior to getting into the draft class. Is this even do-able? Both from an importing into feeder league standpoint and also from a mod maker standpoint.

Now that is the question of the year for us historical simmers.... will we have players in feeder leagues before the draft since we have ghost players now. I hope so!

Very interesting. I hadn't even thought of this. I suspect there will be some sort of complication, but maybe not.

right now, there is no way to get real players into a feeder league.

you'd have set up a database with 'fictional' season data that occurs before their real career actually started to even get this off the ground.

I don't understand the italicized word above in this context. Do you mean that you want to import real MLB players as high schoolers or college students before they enter the draft? It can certainly be done (any player can be imported into any league), but I think you'd have to create your own database to get those players realistically rated at those ages.

Which one of these gentlemen is correct?

Sounds like something Larry Anderson and Gambo may be able to collaborate on if at all possible. Would be HUGE

This issue I'm having with deciding what type of league I first pursue when getting 2007 really depends on this issue.

In essense, there could be no way to use real players and utilize the awesome feeder league feature at the same time.

You could simply change the year of the rookies each season to match what year you'd like to start in, but then ratings would be messed up because current ratings would be based on that season's stats. Plus there's the issue of the birthday and age factor. The game changes birthdays to match the age, so importing a 21 year old Chad Billingsley into a league taking place in 2000 would still show Chad as being 21, although in reality he was actually 14.

Unfortunately, I think it's gonna take a lot of database manipulation to get something like this to work. Which is sort of a shame because I'm sure it's a scenario many users would prefer to explore.

I think he is, actually. I just tried it, and when you import a player, he always goes into the free agent pool, & there's no way to edit a feeder league so that you can sign free agents, & I can't find any way to assign a free agent automatically to a team. You can get a player into the minors, but there's no way to revert a player to undrafted status, apparently.

manipulating the DB is only the beginning of a long process.

basically, you just want to follow real players through their high school and college years, only to have them be the same as when they are imported directly into the draft? seems like a lot of work (mod the DB, workarounds to get them into a feeder) for very little gain (fake HS and COL stats for real players).

In the spirit of the original question, is it possible to have feeder leagues and also import real rookies into the draft class (not have them go through the feeder league)

A good point...

Given the variability in player development, you can't expect many of the historical players to behave much like they really did, and in that case, you lose some of the point of having a historical sim. If Steve Jeltz manages to develop into Barry Bonds and Barry Bonds never makes the majors, or if Mookie Wilson becomes a big slugger while Darryl Strawberry is a speedy leadoff guy, it takes away some of the sense of it being a historical replay of any kind.

if im understanding you, yes, you can import real rookies to the draft and have a FICTIONAL feeder league send players to the draft at the same time.

Aha! I just figured out. You add a fictional major league in league setup, import the players you want, sign them to the teams you want, then go into league setup again and under the "Structure" tab change the fictional major league to a High School or College level league, then affiliate it to the MLB league. However, you will have to edit the ages of each player you import to get it working right. That's not so difficult if you edit the Lahman database in Excel before importing.

this gets them into the feeder draft?

and this wont be a historical replay though, right? i mean, they will have been imported with ratings from real life, then put into a developmental league, and then drafted at a different level of ability then if they were just imported straight to the draft. this will be a fictional league, with real player and team names, right?

It gets them into the feeder league, then when they hit 18 (for HS), they go into the MLB draft. You'll have to give them appropriate performance ratings for their age, of course, but you can use the talent ratings taken from the Lahman (or whatever you use) import. Obviously, the feeder league itself will have to be fictional, because there is no historical database of high school teams. But you can add a fictional HS feeder league onto a real MLB setup.

Not automatically. You'd have to import each player individually, as far as I can tell. If you set up automatic import of historical rookies, they get put in the Ammy Draft.
