Oh, hell no. No Jimmy Brown setting rushing records? No Smokey and the Bandit? No MASH? No Bonanza or Little House on the Prarie? No Mary Tyler Moore Show?

I can no longer read this thread. It's just too heartbreaking.

Meh...Politicians, lawyers...no big loss...and I'm actually okay with McCain.

At least he won't have to endure the Hanoi Hilton.

1936 Prospect Watch:
VICTOR STARFFIN

This is his actual photo, by the way

After emigrating to Japan as a young child, this young Russian hurler learned the game of baseball. Years later, he jumped at the first chance to travel to the country that created the game and traveled to New York City in February, 1936. Fresh off the plane, he walked into the offices of the three New York clubs and demanded a tryout in broken English. Skeptically, scouts from the Perfectos, Knights and Highlanders gathered at the Polo Grounds expecting nothing. Boy were they surprised when he threw fastball after fastball right down the pipe! The bidding war has begun, and you can be certain it will be a dogfight to land this young hotshot!

As the season went along, it appeared that noone in the Continental league wanted to win the pennant and the eventual chore of facing the 108 win Boston Pilgrims. If numbers told the story, the Cincinnati Scarlets would have been the eventual champs. Unfortunately for Cincy fans, neither the 52 homers by Shawn Kienast nor the 20 win seasons from Harlan Pyle and Willie Powell were enough to make up for the ill-fated bounces of the ball. The eventual winners were the New York Highlanders, who backed their way into the playoffs....nearly blowing a 9 game lead by losing 9 of their last 10 games while the 2nd place Boston Shamrocks won 9 of 10. The Highlanders should be huge underdogs.

Next to the word dynasty in the dictionary, there should be an image of the Boston Pilgrims logo. Winning their 6th straight, the Beantown Boys had what for them was an off season, with only 108 wins. Over the span of their 6 pennants, the Pilgrims have compiled a 645-279 record. Satchel Paige still won 24 games, but he took a back seat to Van Mungo who led the way with a 27-5 record. Jimmie Foxx should be on the way to his 3rd Top Slugger, launching 48 bombs for the homer crown. The Pilgrims should easily handle the Highlanders for their 3rd crown in 5 years....but that's what we said in '34 and '35 as well.

RYAN GLEASON, 2B, DETROIT WOLVERINES, 33 Years Old - Gleason had an unexpected slump after midseason and coaches are wondering if something is affecting his play outside of baseball. At 33, most players still have a couple years left, but Gleason may be on his way out.

JAMES CONCANNON, 1B, NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS, 3 Years Old - Highlander fans were stunned when the new hit that Concannon had been released, since his stats through August had been solid, if not up to his usual excellence. The St. louis maroons snatched him up, but as 1936 came to a close, it became apparent that the Highlanders may have known what they were doing. Even so, the way they went about it was rather unprofessional.

1936 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

CONTINENTAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS (90-64)

Team Batting Average: .281 (4th)
Team ERA: 4.02 (8th)

Top Batters:
Tim "The Cannon" Gannon - .288, 20 HR, 101 RBI
Dewey Creacy - .321, 21 HR, 94 RBI, 29 SB
Lou Chiozza - .311, 6 HR, 60 RBI, 26 SB
Ed Morgan - .289, 7 HR, 79 RBI

Top Pitchers:
Sug Cornelius - 17-8, 3.26 ERA
Bernie Walter - 16-8, 3.26 ERA
Red Parnell - 5-2, 2.33 ERA, 28 Saves

FEDERAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: BOSTON PILGRIMS (108-46)

Team Batting Average: .285 (2nd)
Team ERA: 3.17 (1st)

Top Batters:
Jimmie Foxx - .317, 48 HR, 145 RBI
Buck Leonard - .319, 40 HR, 131 RBI
George Puccinelli - .347, 18 HR, 74 RBI
John Beckwith - .298, 23 HR, 98 RBI

Top Pitchers:
Satchel Paige - 24-8, 2.38 ERA, 293 K
Van Mungo - 27-5, 2.34 ERA, 187 K
Terris McDuffie - 17-6, 3.71 ERA, 170 K

This is the Pilgrims' 6th straight World Series, and as usual, they are heavily favored. However, we've heard that tale before. Van Mungo has supplanted Satchel Paige as the Pilgrims' ace, but the crafty vet is still head and shoulders above the competition. In Jimmie Foxx and Buck Leonard, they also have arguably 2 of the top 3 sluggers in the FL, the other being Jefferson Tibbs of the Louisville Colonels. The Highlanders, on the other hand, didn't even seem to be the top team in the CL, having reached there mainly due to the ineptitude of the other CL teams. It should be a cakewalk

PREDICTION: Pilgrims in 6

Not to go off topic or anything here Mets, but what is the career record for home runs in this league, and does Shawn Kienast (151 HR's at age 23) have a legit shot to beat it?

New York stands no chance. Saying Boston in 6 is pretty generous.

I'll check that out tonight when I get home from work.

As an aside, we'll have Hall of Fame polls starting in 3 seasons. Also, now that I finally know how to upload, I'll be posting the HTML reports somewhere.

As of this afternoon, I have a week off, so the pace should pick up for a while. One of the few fringe bennies of being a high school teacher.

Sorry I forgot to check this on Friday. Babe Ruth has the record with 588. I'd say Kienast needs to average 35 HR for 13 more years. It's within reach, but others are in the running, too....and the offense will be going down a bit (not to mention that we could very well be entering a version of WWII).

Good news!!! I finally got my @$$ in gear and uploaded the PLAGUE HTML Reports

Check them out HERE

They're a bit messy now. I'll get around to cleaning up the text files soon, but for now, you may see about 10 "1901" seasons from when I was testing the league totals way back when I started this monstrosity 11 months ago

1936 WORLD SERIES

9/27/1936 - GAME 1 HIGHLANDERS 6 - PILGRIMS 5, 10 innings

Dewey Creacy, Highlander RF, leads the way against the usually dominant Satchel Paige with a 3 hit, 3 RBI day, capped off by a solo shot to win it in extras when Boston closer "Wild Bill" Hallahan hangs one over the center of the plate. Yet again, the Pilgrims are surprised to find themselves behind when they were supposed to dominate.

9/28/1936- GAME 2 HIGHLANDERS 2 - PILGRIMS 18

These are the Pilgrims we've come to expect! The boys from Boston treat the Highlanders like red-headed stepchildren with a 10-spot in the bottom of the 7th, blowing the game wide open and knocking Sam Streeter for a loop. Jeff Heath led the way with 3 hits, including a longball, and 6 RBI. Streeter provided the only runs for New York with a 2 RBI tater of his own in the 5th.

9/30/1936 - GAME 3 PILGRIMS 4 - HIGHLANDERS 0

Jimmie Foxx launches 2 solo shots to lead the Pilgrims offense, but Terris McDuffie only needs one of them as he shuts out New York despite allowing a whopping 7 walks.

10/1/1936 - GAME 4 PILGRIMS 9 - HIGHLANDERS 0

Satchel Paige redeems his Game 1 performance by blanking the Highlanders in complete game shutout to put the Pilgrims up 3 games to 1. Jimmie Foxx hits his 4th homer of the Series and Joe Hauser knocks in 3.

10/2/1936 - GAME 5 PILGRIMS 10 - HIGHLANDERS 2

The Pilgrims bats are once again unleashed against Sam Streeter and a host of relievers as Boston coasts to the crown in a cakewalk. Joe Cronin and Harry "The Horse" Danning each knock in 3 in the series-clinching win.

1936 WORLD CHAMPS - BOSTON PILGRIMS
4th Championship

SERIES MVP: Van Mungo - 2-0, 2.00 ERA, 18 IP, 14 H, 2 BB, 14 K

* at 25, Mungo has already pitched in 6 World Series!!

Odd. I took a look at Bill Foster, the current career ERA leader. Here's a quote from his history:

Won Pitcher of the Month award on 5/1/1933, going 6-0, 1.95...
Injured on 6/19/1933 with a Bone Chips Shoulder, out for entire career...
Signed as a free agent by New York (F) on 9/4/1933.
Won Pitcher of the Month award on 6/1/1933, going 4-0, 0.91...

Something in there doesn't make sense. Career ending injuries usually make you miss a start.

I have the "Retired Players may come back" toggled on....and I also had to resim 1933 after an error occured. He must have had a "CEI" in the first sim, then come back from it

I'll have to edit the 1st three lines out, but I'm sure there are other errors. Since it wasn't an online league, I wasn't as anal retentive about editing the text files.

I'm one of the few people who actually like this sort of anomaly. It's hard to figure someone of that caliber switching teams mid-season. -But it could always happen in a fictional league.

I could imagine that Bill hated Cleveland, so he fakes an injury to move to the bright lights of New York.

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS - 1936

* Italicized events actually happened. If the event is partially italicized, the parts in normal type have been changed for this reality. The changes could be extremely minor or quite significant.

  • January 10 - President Alf Landon announces that the United States will boycott both the Winter and Summer Olympics, to be held in the Magyar Dominion in München and Budapest respectively, in protest of their recent aggressive military tactics and as yet unsubstantiated reports of atrocities.
  • January 16 - Serial killer Albert Fish executed in Sing Sing
  • January 31 - The Green Hornet radio show debuts.
  • February 6-16 - 1936 Winter Olympics: Canada, Mexico and Australia join the United States in the boycott of the competition in München. Combined skiing (later known as Alpine) makes its debut, and military patrol is introduced as a demonstration sport. The International Olympic Committee refuses admission of this sport into the Olympic Program, but the expressed desires of Ferenc Szalasi forces the IOC to make this program a demonstration sport.

Opening ceremonies at the 1936 Winter Olympics in München
  • February - The Klaussteinhöhlen-Komplex, infamous for its use as a subterranean Justizvollzugsanstalt (JVA) by the D.H.R.V. during the Great Global War, is reopened by the Magyar Dominion as a medical research facility. It will be run by Dr. Miklós Nyiszli and a 25 year-old recent graduate of the University of München named Josef Mengele.
  • February 17 - The world's first superhero, The Phantom, makes his first appearance in US newspapers
  • February 26-28 - Led by Sadao Araki, the Imperial Way Faction engineers a successful coup against the Japanese government. Many opponents are killed in the conflict, including General Hideki Tōjō, who had been one of his supporters before the plot unfolded. In the ensuing transition of power, Emperor Hirohito loses much influence, and Japan begins a return to the old Shogunate system, but in the form of a modern Military Shogunate.
  • March - The Population of the Kaposvár concentration camp eclipses 300,000
  • March 1 - Construction of the Kennedy Dam is completed
  • March 3 - Sadao Araki is named Minister-General of Japan. He is chosen narrowly over hardliner General Kazushige Ugaki. This choice leads to internal strife within the military.

Rivals Sadao Araki & General Kazushige Ugaki

  • April - The first NFL Draft is held
  • May 8 - Jockey Ralph Neves is involved in a racing accident at Bay Meadows Racetrack in San Mateo, California and mistakenly pronounced dead. A while later, he wakes up in the morgue and promptly returns to the racetrack but is not allowed to compete in any of the remaining races because of his 'death.'
  • Summer - Plans are announced for a Baseball Hall of Fame to be established in 1939, the game's supposed centennial, in Cooperstown, New York. 10 players will be slated for induction after national balloting later this year.
  • June 6 - New York Special Prosecutor Thomas Dewey secures the conviction of Charles "Lucky" Luciano for prostitution. Luciano is later imprisoned at the Clinton Correctional Facility.
  • June 9 - Republican National Convention: President Alf Landon secures the nomination for his re-election.
  • June 19 - Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling in the ninth round of their heavyweight boxing match at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
  • June 23 - Democratic National Convention: Alabama Senator Hugo Black is narrowly chosen as the party's candidate for President over Michigan Governor Royal S. Copeland and veteran Virginia Congressman Carter Glass. Oklahoma Senator Thomas Gore will join the ticket as the VP candidate.
  • June 28 - His Royal Highness, Prince Alastair of Windsor, announces that he is removing himself from the line of succession to the throne of the United Kingdom. With no other direct descendants of King Arthur alive, it is determined that the next in line to the throne would be 46 year-old Prince Waldemar of Prussia, great-grandson of Queen Victoria. Cynics cite Alastair's announcement as convenient, noting Waldemar's historic relations within the Magyar Dominion and Prime Minister Oswald Mosley's obvious admiration for their government.
  • July - Membership in the British Black Shirts exceeds 250,000
  • July 18 - Spain's civil war begins when nationalist troops under the command of General Francisco Franco rise against the democratic republic with support of agents of the Magyar Dominion.
  • August 1 - The 1936 Summer Olympics: Ceremonies open in Budapest, capital of the Magyar Dominion, marking the first live television coverage of a sports event in world history. Thirty-Six nations have joined the United States in boycotting the ceremonies, including Canada, Mexico, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Sweden and Norway.
  • September 6 - The last surviving thylacine, Benjamin, dies alone in her (despite being named Benjamin, it was female) cage in the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania.

The last photo of Benjamin before her death

  • October 9 - Generators at the Kennedy Dam begin to transmit electricity from the Colorado River 266 miles to Los Angeles, California.
  • October 28 - U.S. President Alf Landon rededicates the Statue of Liberty on its 50th anniversary.
  • November 3 - U.S. presidential election, 1936: Republican Alf Landon is narrowly reelected to a second term over Democratic Hugo Black, Governor of Alabama, by a margin or 276 electoral votes to 255.
  • November 23 - The first edition of Life is published.
  • December 1 - In the United Kingdom, King Arthur abdicates the throne, citing ill health. Rumors swirl that the abdication is due to political pressure.
  • December 11 - The British Parliament passes His Majesty's Declaration of Abdication Act 1936 on behalf of the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
  • December 13 - His Royal Highness Prince Alastair, currently in the United States playing in CF for the Washington Monumentals, reaffirms his decision to remove himself from the line of succession to the British throne.
  • December 26 - Amid controversy, Prince Waldemar of Prussia is crowned King Waldo of the United Kingdom. His first official act is to name Sir Oswald Mosley as Lord-Protector of the United Kingdom, a title not held since Richard Cromwell in 1659.

King Waldo in his first official portrait

  • December 29 - The British Parliament officially recognizes Sir Oswald Mosley as Lord-Protector of the United Kingdom.
  • December 30 - The United Auto Workers union stages its first sit-down strike.
