starting before 1800

Not a big deal-just wondering if it's possible in this version (or starting after 3000, for that matter). There's been some interest in this before. It would be great for alternate-history or completely fictional universes (Coover's Universal Baseball Association started in the year 1).

I can just imagine some super 2,000 year old league. Great funs right there.

Dude, without doing workarounds (which are beyond my understanding) you can't start a league before 1901. Before 1800? I'm guessing the answer is the same.

starting before 1901 is only an issue if using the lahman (or another) database. There are no limitations or problems starting a fictional (ie, not using a database) league before 1901.

Even if starting a fictional league, if you put the year as earlier than 1800, OOTP2006 automatically makes the year 1800.

Is it too much to ask Markus to want to see the Spartans take on the Athenians in a good ol' fashioned round of 450 BC baseball?

In sports news, the Spartans and the Trojans face off in Game One of the Helen Cup tonight. The heavily favored Trojans are expected to start their horse in Games One and Four, and again in Game Seven if necessary.

When I tried to set 1871 as the start year for my fictional Federal League, it wouldn't accept it. Granted, that was in the 1.01 version of 2006, not the latest build.

JHruska's post rocked! "Paris has a good eye at the plate. Achilles is day to day with a bad ankle…"

You can start leagues in OOTP 2006 as early as 1800, or as late as 3000. You can also do historical leagues in the 1800s with workarounds. It's been a few months since I did it, so I don't remember exactly how it worked, but I think I used the old trick of starting a fictional league in 1870, simming a short season, deleting all the players, then having it import "rookies" from 1871. It churned out a pretty fair sim of the 1871-72 NA, with high scores and zillions of errors, just the way it was.

The league file for a 2000 year old league would be massive. And imagine how lomg it would take to sim? That being said please get to work on it.

I didn't even realize there was a limitation on years. With the old engine, there wasn't, but if you made the year less than 4 digits, I think there was an issue with something or other (I don't remember).

The limitation may be related to the fact that OOTP now uses real calendars.

Well, there was a rather large, long term league just completed...let's just say that James T Kirk would have been attending a Giants game.

That's because starting a 1776 leauge is about the most pointless option I've ever heard.

Oh, that's right. Because only the options that interest you are important. Hopefully Markus has your email address so he can run all the new additions to the game by you to find out which ones are pointless and which aren't.

Hey, they played SOME kind of game at Valley Forge. Probably either Town Ball or 'the New England game'. Washington enjoyed a good game of catch.

And actually the British troops stationed in Canada did, too. Now, if they could only have gotten themselves organized….
