Plague !!! 1936 Presidential Election: Vote Now!

Please vote for who should be the next President of the United States. I have listed their platforms and photos for your perusal. I have also linked their names to their Wikipedia page (or another page with vital info on their actual life).

THE CANDIDATES

REPUBLICAN:
PRESIDENT: ALF LANDON - U.S. President - 1933-present, U.S. Senator from Arkansas - 1927-31
VICE PRESIDENT: GERALD PRENTICE NYE - U.S. Senator from North Dakota - 1926-34, Secretary of State 1934-June 1936, U.S. Vice President - June 1936-present

SLOGAN - "AMERICA FIRST"

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Age: Landon - 48, Nye - 43
  • Landon was considered a "liberal" Republican, but has grown more conservative during his presidency, especially with regads to U.S. involvement in foreign wars
  • Has lowered the national deficit, but due to the country's continued economic woes, he has not been able to lower taxes as had been promised.
  • Has publicly stated that former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Teddy Roosevelt is one of his role models and should be considered "the greatest statesman of the past 50 years".
  • He is described as a fiscal conservative who nevertheless believes that government must also address social issues
  • Fervently opposes labor unions.
  • Landon continues to be criticized as "a bit of a milquetoast", easily intimidated when confronted aggressively. His softspoken manner has been alternately characterized as "silent strength" and "a sign of spinelessness"
  • Though initially quite popular in the first couple years of his presidency (perhaps due to comparisons to his extremely unpopular predecessor, Al Smith), Landon's approval rating has recently dropped below 50%
  • Following the death of Vice President Charles Curtis in February 1936, Landon lobbied for a new version of the Presidential Succession Act, allowing for the Secretary of State to be elevated to the office of Vice President upon confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Secretary of State Nye was confirmed a month after the Act was ratified into law.
  • Has been a strident supporter for all legislation relating to equal rights, even suggesting the addition of an Equal Rights Amendment.
  • Nye is a member of the agrarian reform movement, often writing legislation for agricultural price supports
  • He is a protege of the late Vice President Robert LaFollette, espousing his Progressive ideals.
  • He is a Freemason and a Presbyterian
  • Despite criticizing the actions of the Magyar Dominion, Nye has stated that "America must not involve itself in the conflicts of other nations. As long as they do not enter into our domain, neutrality is the best route."
  • Believes that the call for war has been encouraged by the munitions industry and exacerbated by propaganda from Hollywood.

DEMOCRAT:
PRESIDENT: HUGO BLACK - U.S. Senator from Alabama: 1926-present
VICE PRESIDENT: THOMAS GORE - U.S. Senator from Oklahoma: 1907-present

SLOGAN - "STRONG LEADERS FOR THESE DIRE TIMES"

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Black - 50, Gore - 65
  • Black is renowned as a champion for equality for all races, despite unsubstantiated rumors that he was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
  • Served in the Great Global War on the Mexican Front as a Major in the Army.
  • Awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his heroism in the Panama Canal Campaign in 1914.
  • Opposes the doctrine of substantive due process
  • Believes that there is no constitutionally-protected right to privacy
  • Has proposed sanctions against Brazil, Italy and the Magyar Dominion for their recent aggressive maneuvers in Europe and South America
  • Known to vehemently support the separation of church and state.
  • Black has authored legislation requiring lobbyists to publicly register their names and salaries
  • Sponsored the Black-Connery Bill in 1935, which sought to establish a national minimum wage and a maximum workweek of forty hours. Despite its failure to pass in the Republican-dominated Congress, it is widely viewed as sparking a national dialogue on fair standards for labor
  • Senator Gore has been completely blind since his early childhood
  • One of the most popular Senators in the nation, Gore is finishing his 5th term
  • Some of Gore's colleagues in the Senate have attempted to take advantage of Gore's blindness by tricking him into signing documents that it was not in his party's interest for him to sign. More often than not, however, he turned the tables on these sharp dealers and tricked them into signing documents that they did not intend to sign.
  • He is extremely popular with the press who have dubbed him "The Blind Cowboy."
  • Opposed the United States entry into the Great Global War, even after American involvement began, but has stated that direct aggression from any foreign power would necessitate an "immediate and reciprocal response".
  • On domestic policy, he is a supporter of the interests of farmers and Native Americans.
  • Recently authored a bill placed before the United States Senate which encourages American citizens not to travel aboard belligerent merchant vessels, due to the fact that they may be under threat of attack by Dominion warships. He feels the loss of American lives upon these boats threatened official American neutrality at the time
  • Rumored to be an avowed atheist
  • Gore often voices his disgust with the depths to which humanity often sinks. He was once overheard stating, "I'd belong to any race except the human, if there were another choice."

Gotta go Republican here. That no constitutional right to privacy of Black's platform scares me.

I voted for Black/Gore because I think it would be cool to have a blind VP
