What is wrong with the NBA?
Kobe suspended for one game for "hitting Manu Ginobli in the eye" in last nights game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a7TGrVIu3o The video can't show any clearer that it was completely unintentional. Are we going to suspend NFL defensive backs who get their feet tangled with a WR now? |

Since when does Kobe's follow-through extend out to the side of his body?

dola,
I don't think he deserved a suspension, either. But it looked quite intentional.

Yeah but just like qbs getting hit in the NFL where it doesnt matter if it was a finger or witha helmet, the rule is a rule. Intentional or not you cant do it in the eyes of the league. Which actually may be a good policy because there would be way too many complaints from teams claiming it was unintentional. Id rather they stick with the current policy. Now if he didnt do it at all now that i can agree would be wrong to suspend him. But i do beleive players should still get paid during the suspension unless its a case of fighting. I dont think they should lose pay if they were just playing the game.

It isn't like he slapped him across the face after he landed. It was mid shot. If you think a pro athlete is going to pass up a buzzer-beater to smack an opponent across the face, you have less faith in sport than I do.

watching the video its pretty obvious that there was contact going both ways. manu's went flying into kobe and as they colided thats when kobe's arm went off to the side. and especially because its manu the flop i think this was a horrible decision by the nba

Watch the video again.
Its hard to pull someone arm down when one is at your side and the other one is on someones back. He didn't pull down the arm.

My take:
Manu was going at Kobe aggressively because it was buzzer beater. Kobe, was upset that Ginobli got the block and he seemed to intentionally slam his hand/arm backward at Manu and connected. I'm not sure if I would give a game suspension, but I can definitely see where it comes from. |

my take is that when Manu blocked Kobe's shot Kobe tried to make it look like Manu pushed him once he felt Manu's body right next to him and his arm just happened to swing down and hit Manu. Either way though, I think its a good call by the NBA. If you dont get fouled, dont go swinging your arms every which way.

He got his shot blocked, and threw his arm out trying to clear Manu out to try and regain the ball and get another shot off before the buzzer. If you watch it he shoves him with the off arm grabs the ball and throws up another shot, although not in time. His eyes were on the basketball the entire time, his focus was on trying to beat the buzzer, not hit Ginobili. He happened to hit Manu in the head, sucks for Manu but its really not that big a deal. Kobe didn't intentionally hit him, its a ridiculous suspension. There are harder fouls in every game than the Kobe incident.
Brian Cook got bumped a little on a jumper at the end of the Knicks game tonight and accidentally hit Jared Jeffries on his follow through as he was falling down. Jeffries caught a finger in the eye, so are they going to suspend Cook now? They just set the precedent with Kobe, if they try and suspend Cook you can bet there is going to be alot of trouble coming Sterns way from the PA. The NBA is trying to go so far out of their way to portray this new squeaky clean image its ridiculous.

Actually the guy you would pin this on is discipline czar Stu Jackson.

Knicks 99, Lakers 94, Kobe 0. I'm happy for one day at least.

I hate Bean with a passion, but he shouldn't have been suspended.

Shouldn't have been suspended, though it's clear he threw his arm out intentionally.
