Did any of our Brits here listen to the 80th anniversary commentary on Five Live Sports Extra on Sunday?

FiveLive broadcast the Euro 2004 matches but annoyingly always changed announcing teams every 30 minutes or so.

Nope didn't listen it, I've seen the original grid they used to use years ago probably in a Shoot annual or something.

Two commentators, one summariser for most games.
Commentators each do a half of each half, or two quarters if you like.

I don't know why. It's been that way ever since I've been listening.

I guess part of it is that you have to do a lot of commentating on the radio. No chance to give your voice a bit of a breather.

Plus no-one could listen to Alan Green for a whole match.

One of them was much better than the other. FiveLive did a great job overall, IMO.

5 Live is really good in general, my favourite radio station. The drive time show in particular is TT.

Alan Green's an Irish commentator who spends most of the match complaining about everything, as if every single tiny mistake in a match was deliberately designed specifically to piss him off.

For various reasons they have to have two reporters at the big matches, so if they are both there it makes sense to split the commentary. The most basic reason is live commentary is carried on Five, but at the same time they provide update reports on Radio Four and some of the local BBC stations as well. Then at full time one puts together the post match report while the other nips down to grab any interviews and the like. Throw in the safety net factor; who can forget Alan Green getting interrupted in mid-commentary by the PA announcement mentioning his car was on fire

Century FM do a phone in with various players from the past talking about football, you do have to register to listen which is the only drawback. If you do register and you don't want to put your proper details in then put the postcode (zip) as BL2 1BZ it's the redlight district in Bolton 1pm est the show starts and they also do live games, mainly the Manchester teams.
