Everton to possibly launch legal action over Jose Mourinho's comments about Andy Johnson.

Quote:
Everton have consulted lawyers over the possibility of taking legal action against Jose Mourinho for defamation of character after comments by Chelsea's manager about Andy Johnson, the Everton forward, following the Premiership game between the teams on Sunday.

Mourinho appeared to suggest that Johnson, an England inter-national, had dived in an attempt to win a penalty while under pressure from defender Khalid Boulahrouz and Hilario, Chelsea's goalkeeper, during the visitors' 3-2 win at Goodison Park. Yet television replays suggested that Johnson had been pushed in the back by Boulahrouz.

"He's dangerous for opponents because you can't trust him and I was not happy with that, but I think he was a bit embarrassed and he behaved very well after that," Mourinho said.

His comments prompted an angry response from Everton yesterday, with the club and Anthony McFarlane, Johnson's representative, jointly condemning the Portuguese coach and demanding that he retract his comments.

"To publicly question the integrity of a player of Andrew's professionalism and honesty is not only wholly unacceptable and quite possibly defamatory, but also, in our opinion, highly damaging for both club and player.

"We would urge the footballing authorities to look closely at Mr Mourinho's comments and then, perhaps, seek a formal explanation."

Now I love AJ, but seriously dude, just forget about what Mourinho says about you.

I don't know. The referee said he couldn't make out the difference between stewards and players from one corner to the other.

And allegedly both teams wanted to play, which is odd considering if it was a bit of rain, or a blizzard (see Sunderland/Fulham last year) they'd want it called off. But fog is okay clearly.

Id love to have watched it. Its fun to both watch sports and play sports in the fog.

I presume that they will play this tomorrow?

No, Liverpool have said it won't be.
In fact, it will probably end up being played on the date of the first leg of the semifinal round (at the beginning of January).

I guess they'll find a way somehow to cram all the games in.
As for the second question, when there isn't any money involved (see League Cup, Club World Cup, European Super Cup).

SDPM..the Gagne deal went through today. It could be a great move for the Rangers.

It's only a one-year deal. And as I said in the previous thread, he'll be gone at the end of it if he does any good.

You are a pessimist, arent you? Maybe he will have a feeling of loyalty?

Carlos Lee?

And maybe so. But probably not if they finish third, which is the most likely.

Did Texas make a comprable offer for Lee? And I have a feeling that a couple years down the road Texas will be happy they didnt spend that much money to sign him.

I have no idea, I'm afraid. But if they didn't, then why did they trade for him at the deadline?
It seems a pretty bad deal to me.

There is a 'win now, philosophy in baseball. Take the Randy Johnson trade from Seattle to Houston. I also think that because the MLB and the Players Association reached an agreement so quickly, that loosened a lot of wallets. Texas was unlucky there with Lee in my opinion.

I think there is a win now philosophy in all sports with the money there is nowadays.
That's part of the reason you see more managers getting sacked.

Liverpool match off due to fog - PA Sport

Heavy fog has forced the postponement of Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter-final clash at home to Arsenal.

The match had been in doubt from early in the evening with Anfield shrouded in the thick mist but hopes were raised when referee Martin Atkinson undertook his first inspection at 6.15pm (local time) and said, if conditions had not deteriorated in 30 minutes, the game would go ahead.

However, on his return at 6.45pm conditions had worsened and Atkinson, concerned about visibility for both his officials and players, decided the situation was unlikely to improve and so declared the match unplayable.

The fog had earlier caused problems for Arsenal with their plane having to be diverted to Blackpool airport because of conditions in Liverpool.

Many fans were also stuck in traffic, backed-up because of the fog, and would have struggled to have made the 7.45pm kick-off.

Atkinson said he had endeavoured to get the game played but he had to consider not only his fellow officials and the players but also a full house at Anfield.

"We were informed at 4pm this afternoon the conditions were quite bad and we got to the ground at 4.50pm to have a look at it," he told Sky Sports.

"It is very misty and has been for the last three hours. We have been in the stands, looked round from different angles from a spectators' point of view and the weather is not getting better - you can't see some parts of the pitch."

"When you look across the pitch from the far (Centenary Stand) side you can't see this touchline. I have to think of my assistant referees and the control of the game."

Both Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez and counterpart Arsene Wenger wanted to play and Atkinson said he did all he could to keep the match on but felt the conditions could compromise safety.

"We are all disappointed the game could not go ahead," said the Yorkshire official.

"It is a massive game and from an official's point of view we want to be officiating."

"From the situation we can't do that. For us to start the game and then have an assistant not being able to see an offside decision would bring the game into a farce."

Benitez was unhappy the match could not go ahead.

"I think we could play. I was surprised because this morning we were training in worse conditions," he said.

"You cannot change the decision. You must respect it but we don't agree."

Arsenal manager Wenger admitted he had been keen to see how his side, which was to have included a number of fringe players, would cope against an expected stronger hosts' line-up.

"It is very much disappointing because the young players had a good opportunity to play tonight," he told Radio Five Live.

"We had a good mixture of experienced and young players and I think it would have been very interesting."

Wenger said he would have happily played the match a day later but there was not enough time to put everything in place.

"It is impossible in 24 hours to rearrange a game," he added.

Anfield stadium manager Ged Poynton explained: "You need 10 days' notice minimum to inform Merseyside Police for their requirements."

Poynton added that after discussions with the police he was satisfied from a safety point of view the match could go ahead but the final decision rested with the official.

"The police and I have no issue over safety, we could see all the spectators through the CCTV," he told Sky Sports.

"The areas which concerned us was spectators at the back of the stands who could not see parts of the ground but we were quite happy to accept that but the referee decided to have another inspection at 7.45pm."

"The referee makes the decision when there is an issue over the weather."

If I'm not mistaken it should have been televised and knowing what stranglehold Sky have on Premiership games it must have been really bad for it to get called off.

I'd have been ashamed if I was an Aussie if you hadn't have won the Ashes back (well a replica of the Ashes lol) two opening batsmen not playing, captain not playing, best bowler just coming back from injury and our best player just coming back from injury and yet not once have they given excuses of not keeping the Ashes now that's class.

So Charlton lost last night to League Two Wycombe in the League Cup at home 1-0.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...up/6192415.stm

And yet their chief executive says he won't get rid of Les Reed. Well they are going down in that case then. He is not a manager, he never has been before, and he's not good enough. He must be about 55 so if he hasn't managed before now, it's cause he's not a manager!
Some of these clubs seem to use blind faith when they're picking managers, he's just not good enough.

They lose 5-1 to Tottenham, 3-0 to Liverpool in a game that Alan Hansen said was the most one-sided game he's ever seen, and now to a League Two side.

If Peter Varney wants to keep him that's fine, but they may as well get out the road map for their trips to Colchester, Barnsley, and Burnley in 2007-08, because that is where they are going. They are doomed for relegation.
