2006 - 2007 Chicago Cubs off-season thread

The wheels have been turning in Cubdom. They hire a good manager that has a lot of heart and some success, in Lou Piniella.

They sign Wade "Gimme anotherchance - my shoulder feels better" Miller. They re-signed Aramis "Can't Leg out a Grounder" Ramirez for 73 million and Henry "The Gun" Blanco. They sign Mark DeRosa. They trade for Neil Cotts.

Now, they are about to sign one of the most sought after free agents this off-season Alfonso Soriano. Hopefully, they can open the purse again and sign a couple of decent starting pitchers.

Maybe the Tribune is tired of being laughed at, regarding the Cubs and have decided to focus on winning. I'm also an aspiring comedian...

I read that, too. It's nice to see Ryno get a job managing a minor league team.

Who knows? Maybe they'll groom him to replace Piniella someday.

Rumor was he was a late canidate for the Cubs managerial position but Jim Hendry felt he needed more expierience. In other Cubs news, there was reportedly a 3 team trade talked about between the Pirates, Rockies and Cubs. Cubs would recieve Jason Jennings, Pirates- Brad Hawpe and Jacque Jones and Rockies- Paul Malhom and Angel Guzman or Carlos Marmol. I would rather see the cubs acquire Hawpe than Jason Jennings. what do you guys think. Also who would u rather have Gil Meche, Jason Marquis or ted Lilly. I heard the cubs were talking to all 3.

I'd rather have Jason Schmidt. It isn't my money they're spending.

lol. Talks are that they Cardinals have entered in the race. Now I don't care if he goes to Chicago as long as he isn't in St. Louis.

northsidebaseball.com is really the only decent place for cubs discussion free from the discrimination of fans of better teams

Your Cubbies can have Schmidt... Way too old and not productive enough for the price he will cost

No, we don't want him either. At least not the smart ones.

Well it doesn't matter because he's going to LA and got paid. Really that much for Schmidt. Imagine what Zito must be looking at then.

I've been reading that Schmidt was wanted more than Zito because Barry has lost a bit of velocity on the fastball.

Guess we'll see if the Cubs miss out on him, too.

Cubs sign Lilly- 4 years, 40 mill

I like it for the most part. It will be interesting to see how much his ERA improves as he comes over to the NL.

I really like this deal. The cubs really needed a left who will eat up lots of innings. His era should improve just getting out of the AL east let alone the AL.

Thanks, for the good news. More is better, right?

Hopefully Lilly will stay healthy, I know he's had problems before, Otherwise he will push Wood and Prior for the league lead in Simulated games pitched :P

I haven't heard that (about the FB) about Zito . . . but Schmidt has lost 4-5 mph supposedly . . . is that what you meant?

IMO, either Zito or Schmidt would really help the Cubs rotation, since it needs so much help. Either one will be expensive. I see Zito getting slightly more money with more years than Schmidt reportedly is getting from LA. Hendry should just get it done.
