GMJ didn't do much in 2003 when he played 144 games (513 PAs) or 2005 when he played 131 games (526 PAs).

I'd say the peak of his bell curve is probably around .270 with the edges of the bell being either he repeats his performance or slides back to .250 or below. But anything can happen and as an Angel's fan I'll hope for the repeat. But I sure don't understand this signing given the bucks.

This is an absurd signing, and don't badmouth the Little Cat contract. $14m over 3 years for the big half of an outfield platoon isn't bad at all in this market.

Catalanotto got the same contract Alex Gonzalez got.

He should fire his agent given the way this off-season is going.

I was hoping GMJ stood for "Greg Maddux Jr."

More people should complain about this deal than they did with Alex and his 250 million.

Matthews Jr. should be sentenced to 5 years in state prison for grand larceny.

Similar Batters

1. Leon Roberts (963)
2. Mike Davis (955)
3. Terrence Long (954)
4. Gabe Kapler (953)
5. Marvin Benard (951)
6. Dick Williams (947)
7. Oddibe McDowell (943)
8. Eric Hinske (943)
9. Corey Patterson (941)
10. Johnny Lindell (940)

Name a "good" player in that group. Who in that group can you build a team around?

Long is a $4.5 m player. Kapler is $750,000. Benard, at the end, was a $4.2m player. Patterson is a $2.8m player.

Let's look at Transactions:

March 23, 2000: Traded by the San Diego Padres to the Chicago Cubs for Rodney Myers.

August 10, 2001: Selected off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Chicago Cubs.

December 28, 2001: Purchased by the New York Mets from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

April 3, 2002: Traded by the New York Mets to the Baltimore Orioles for John Bale.

May 23, 2003: Selected off waivers by the San Diego Padres from the Baltimore Orioles.

November 24, 2003: Selected off waivers by the Atlanta Braves from the San Diego Padres.

April 2, 2004: Released by the Atlanta Braves.

You mean to tell me that you can't find someone that is 95% the man that Gary Matthews Jr is for $2.5 million /yr?

This is possibly the worst contract ever given out in MLB.
10 mill per for a guy that has been at best a 5th OF'er for most of his career? that's ******ed.

Come on, the guy did have that great catch over the wall that was shown 50 bajillion times. That was probably the most played clip of the Rangers last season. Of course he's worth $10 mil per for 5 years.

God, and here people blame the yanks for just throwing money around like its nothing. At least we haven't been dumb enough this time around to hand out any of these moronic deals.

Actually, the Yanks have been downright sensible.

If we are talking about free agents, then no.

You could probably get David Dellucci or Ricky Ledee.

He wouldn't be wasting his money on a guy who had a career year. Therefore saving his money on players who are actually beneficial to the team long term instead of players taking the money and running like a Steve Miller song.
You'd think the owners would learn after Javy Lopez, Bobby Bonilla, and Bruce Sutter just to name a few.

Wait a minute......... were talking about people who have lots of money and no common sense....and that is the only thing that makes any sense here

Ricky Ledee isn't good enough, and I'd be interested to see what David Dellucci could get. He's looking for a starting spot and starter money. That was why the Phillies didn't try to re-sign him. However, now the Phillies seemed to be changing their stance.

Actually the price on people who didn't just have a career year would be even higher.

It's not that GMs got no common sense. It's simply that we have no real perspective of what they are doing. Your sense of value is simply derived by past baseball contracts, while GMs got better ideas of how contract value and team revenue interact.

Also all free agent contracts SHOULD be over-valued, if only for the winner's curse. If they are not, it actually means the market is not efficient.
