a cool idea for the next OOTP is a way to imput a team philosophy for your team. say i want to preach patience throughout my minor and major league system or i like aggressive hitters who dont strike out so i can hit and run more. just a thought.

Team philosophy would be a sweet idea especially if you could set it for the computer (ie other)teams. You could have the Dodgers focus be pitching for example. Drafts and FA signings could be based on this philosophy. Nice idea.

I like it:
You could have focus on pitching, focus on hitting, win now!, rebuild, focus on youth, focus on cost, as philosiphies for the teams and the scouts/AI would focus on these priorities for their team. One thing I think is that these should be somewhat dynamic, for example a team that is really close to winning would switch to a Win Now! philosiphy, a team that is losing money would swith to the cheap (focus on cost) philosiphy, a team that's not in the penant race and has an average age around 33 would focus on a youthful philosiphy, and the other teams would focus on hitters/pitchers depending on how their hitting and pitching stacks up. Good idea! |

You would also have to have a "Not a Clue" philosophy to cover teams like the Cubs.

If you want a patient team, you acquire or sign or draft players with high BB & BA talent/ratings. If you want aggressive hitters who don't strike out, you go out and get players who have good Speed and Avoid K talent/ratings. I'm just not sure what a "team philosophy" category would do for you when you already can shape and mold your team to look however you want. Edit: After re-reading the thread, I agree with KoD that this would be a useful category to be able to assign to computer-operated teams. But, as Scott pointed out, this would have to be an ever-changing quality because of the dynamics of a baseball league. [ January 25, 2002: Message edited by: Hammer755 ]</p> |

Hammer, i see what what you mean with the major league level but what about the minor leaguers? maybe i would want to develop my players a certain way. maybe i would like my minor leaguers to take more pitches. my players would come up to the majors with a better understanding of the strike zone. and maybe a drawback to that would be pure hitter type prospects wouldnt reach their potential. imagine if nomar or vlad took 120 walks a year, it would probably inhibit them and they wouldnt be as good at hitting.

By the way, Scott, I love all those ideas, I hope we can get something like that in v4, or at least sometime in the future of OOTP.

I think this is a very good idea, too. Though as someone pointed out, the team philosophy would have to change from time to time. In addition, how about changing the computer teams' managerial tendencies (and managers) change as time progresses as well. The 2001 Phillies had a bunch of speedsters, so they tended to have more agressive baserunners, but this might not be true in five years, so you can have the managerial tendencies reflect that.
