Francisco Liriano - Out for 2007

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Twins standout left-hander Francisco Liriano has been scheduled for surgery on his ailing elbow that will most certainly keep him from pitching in 2007.

Liriano will undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday.

Huge blow not only to the Twins, but to this fantastic rookie pitcher.

Oof.

I have to wonder if the attempted comeback pushed it that far.

While it's devestating for the Twins next year, he's most certainly young enough that Minnesota shouldn't even hesitate at doing the surgery. Lose a year, and have him come back STILL in his early 20s and able to pitch.

Wow, seems everytime a young phenom pitcher comes along he gets derailed by something like this. Hopefully he can bounce back.

Bet the Twins wish they hadn't rushed him back now. Truly pathetic management decision there

We waited and he was pitching without any pain. If anything we held him out longer than he wanted.

LOL Whatever, that's why he was right back on the DL and now will miss the 07 season with the same injury

LOL. Whatever, that's why we can tell you know nothing about the Twins managment and Liriano's injury.

I'd be more concerned about the long-term rather than just 2007.

i wonder if the earlier speculation about increased pitcher injury rates due to the WBC, will make a comeback.

thats a horrible sentence, but my few attempts at rewording are worse, so i hope it makes sense.

In the long term it might be a good thing for him. He will probably be stronger and healthier than ever in 08 without his injured ligament.

I was going to post something like this. Isn't Tommy John surgery the one thing where a guy comes back just as good? It's not something that should linger like a bum shoulder or something once he gets back to 100%.

Some guys come back throwing even harder, actually, because the ligament is no longer weak.

Eric Gagne had this surgery before anyone knew who he was.

Or worse, Wally Bunker - after winning 19 games at age 19, he pitched his last MLB game at age 26.

Hindsight's 20/20. At the time he came back, he didn't have any pain in his arm. The Twins were looking for his help to win the division and he felt like he could provide. How is that 'truly pathetic management'?

Because you can't just ignore the future risks with someone like that
