What am I doing wrong?
I want to create a fantasy league with actual/real players. I created a 12 team league, set it up with historical and current ballparks, created managers, coaches, etc. and imported the players from historical database, one by one as I wanted. This was a pretty tedious task, but I have no interest in playing with made up players. I set up pitching rotations, line ups, etc.
However, when I try to play, I get a message "Inaugural Draft is not finished." When I try to finish the inaugural draft, the game locks up and crashes. I then imported a bunch of free agents so there would be players to draft. The game still locks up and crashes. I reloaded the game and exported the rosters. I created a new game and tried to import the roster. The game crashes. I am playing with the Mac version of the game. I am very reluctant to buy this game if it cannot do what I want. What am I doing wrong? I wanted to recreate a fantasy league I used to play in APBA with real players. I thought OOTP would be a step up because it can carry records across multiple seasons and the level of detail in the stats is outstanding. However, am I wrong to think this game is full of bugs and crash prone? The interface is pretty clunky and not particularly intuitive, but I figured it's a complex game. I am running out of patience. I have entered 300 players individually three times now and each time the result is a crash and no playable game. I want to create a 12 team league with two divisions and draft real players of the past and present. I understand that I must place each player individually on the team rosters... one at a time. Can anyone help me with this or is OOTP not capable of playing this type of league? |

There is an option during universe creation for each league of whether or not you want to start the league with an inaugural draft. I'm thinking you may have that option checked, and then the game is trying to start a draft without any unsigned players to stick in it. Try started a league with that option off. It will generate fictional players on all the teams, just get rid of them and then do your importing.

Another round
I can't remember whether or not I checked the box about the inaugural draft. There ought to be a way to cancel the draft. I even imported another 30 undrafted players and it still won't work. I also tried exporting the rosters and importing them into a new game... OOTP locks up and quits. I tried saving the game as a quickstart game... that doesn't work either.
It just seems to me that OOTP crashes and locks up way too often. I am going to give it another try and do like you say. However it takes hours to import 300 individual players and my patience with OOTP is wearing out. It crashes way way too much. |

I made a thread in the tech support forum referencing your problem. Hopefully someone will reply to it in there. It's the thread called "user having problems with player imports / locking up"

thanks
Thanks for posting this problem for me. I appreciate your response very much.
I have started over from scratch again. I created a fictional league with the 12 teams I wanted, started the game, then released and deleted all the fictional players. I am rebuilding each team one at a time, manager, coaches, players, ballpark, etc. I hope this time I get a playable game. The OOTP learning curve is very very steep. However, if the game does what it says it does, then it will be worth it. |

joeswell, were you able to make any progress on this?
Typically, we have seen the lock-up on import in earlier versions of the game, when a player had a quotation mark in their nickname. I'm going to move this whole thread over to tech support. |

Progress
I was never able to resolve the issue. The game just kept locking up. There didn't seem to be a way to cancel a draft. I have the Mac OS X 10.3.4 version of OOTP.
I ended up starting over from scratch. I re-imported 400+ real major leaguers individually from the Arod23Garlon database and assigned them to their specific teams. I created 12 different ballparks, getting the park's dimensions from the internet and the ball park factors from the game. I created managers, coaches, doctors and scouts for each team and set strategy according to each "owners" preferences. And... the game played and it has been fun. I'm into the 3rd year. It's neat to watch the computer managers make deals, sign free agents, etc. |
