Here's another handfull of 'Cans....

Bob Johnson Northern Ireland
HW 1967,70
1 win / 1 loss / 0 draws / 1 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Called him Bob 67 because of another Bob Johnson in the data base already. I put his nationality as Northern Ireland because his first fight in December 1967 was in Belfast against Doyle Brown. He KO'd Brown in the 3rd round. BoxRec only lists his nationality as British?

He next shows up in London in December 1970 where he's TKO'd in the 3rd round by Alan Burton.

Jack Charles England
HW 1963,67
0 wins / 2 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Lost to Jimmy Blanche by 2nd round TKO in Feb 1963. Next shows up in BoxRec in May 1967 when he looses a 3 round decision to Bernanrd Pollard.

Peter Thomas England
HW 1967-68
0 wins / 2 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO

Hometown/Birthplace: Bristol, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Thomas was stopped in the 3rd round by Gene Innocent in November 1967 and then in the 2nd round by Bunny Johnson in Feb 1968.

Thank you Mike.

I'm really enjoying this 67 project. I've been doing more "research" into the time period to find out all I can about the HW's from that time. My ultimate quest I guess would be to get all the HW's from the whole decade of the 60's into the early years of the 70's rated into the game.

Another in the long line of record padders....

Ian Hawkins Rating 1 England
HW 1965-67
4 wins / 6 losses / 2 draws / 2 KO

Hometown/birthplace: Hammersmith, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Beat a busy journeyman MW of the 60's, Joe Somerville(38-53-4,9KO) in his first fight. Followed that with the first of three fights against another MW, Tony Moore(21-2-1,14KO), a 5th round TKO loss to Moore. He lost three more straight fights after that to Charlie Wilson(8-15-2,2), Dave Barber(12-5-0,5KO) and Chris Cox(6-6-0,5). After a win and a draw against Tony Moore in early 1966, Hawkins then won a 6 round decision win against George Dulaire in his first career fight in April 1966. Those two fought a month later, this time ending in a 6 round draw. After losses to Roger Tighe and Terry Daly in February and May 1967, Hawkins finished his career in September of that year with a 4th round TKO of LHW Roy Ferguson(3-6-0,3KO).

I've enjoyed reading through the first few postings. Hope to get caught up with it soon. Keep up the great work on that!

[QUOTE=Rocco Del Sesto]Barry Rodney Rating 1 England
Heavyweight 1965-68
4 wins / 14 losses / 4 draws / 2 KO

Hometown: Cricklewood, England
Birthplace: Jamaica

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Barry's four wins were over Tommy Woods twice, Terry Feeley, and Billy Thompson(3-10-0,1).The four draws were against Mick Carter, Ian Mayberry, Mick Carter again and Dennis Avoth. He lost three times to Alex Kelly(4-2-0,0), Jim Mcllvaney twice, Vic Moore twice, Barney Wilson, Des Cox, Gene Innocent, Peter Boddington and Terry Daly.

Just to give you a little update on Rodney. I'd set Rodney's nationality as England, but it probably should be Jamaica which was his birthplace. I found Rodney in the 1968 Ring Record Book listed as Jamaica and I round a referance to him in a Ring magazine as Jamaican. I'm finding the Nationality of these UK fighters a bit confusing at times especially based on what BoxRec shows. This being an example and another example being the fighter I'm working on now, Charlie Wilson (I'm going to spell his name Charley because I have another Charlie Wilson in the data base already and the Ring refers to him as Charley), his nationality as shown in BoxRec is Jamaican but his hometown is Aldgate, England and references both in Ring Record bood and a couple Ring magazines in 68, mention Aldgate and all his fights were in England with a couple in Wales. Why boxrec. lists him as Jamaican??

Anywho, I would change Rodney to Jamaican if you haven't done so already.

Charley Wilson Rating 1 England
HW 1965-70
8 wins / 15 losses / 2 draws / 2 KO

Hometown: Aldgate, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Wilson's career started out with 2 straight losses to MW Tony Moore(21-2-1,14) and LHW Eric Whistler(1-1-0,0). Then he reeled out 4 wins against George Wiggs twice, Ian Hawkins and Vernon Allen. Following an 8 round draw with a Louis Samuels(5-9-1,1) though, the career went down hill with only a 4-13-1 mark after that. The wins came against Mick Oliver, Vic Moore, Dennis Avoth and surprisingly in his last fight in 1970 against Jamaican Dennis Forbes(8-5-0,5KO). Wilson's other draw with another 8 rounder, against Len Rocky James.

The losses mounted up against Gerry Hassett, Eddie Avoth twice, Roger Tighe twice, Ernie Field, Des Cox, Peter Boddington twice, Terry Daly twice, Dave Ould and Terry Feeley.

Great work on these golden age tomato cans, Rocco! Hopefully you will be able to rate all the ones not done yet. The sixties and seventies is one of my favorite periods in boxing history and i'm glad you are rating these fighters.

Thanks again.

Charlie White Rating 1 England
HW 1963-73
9 wins / 13 losses / 1 draw / 4 KO

Hometown: Loughborough, England
Birthplace: New York, NY, USA

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

White fought one time outside of England, that in September 1969 when he travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark and outpointed in 6 rounds Hans Jorgen Jacobsen. Of White's other 8 victories they included over Jack Stevenson, Dennis Avoth twice, Billy Wynter twice. He lost fights to Len Rocky James, Avoth twice, Terry Feeley, Terry Daly, Wynter, Carl Gizzi, Guibea Roger(13-35-1,11KO), Graham Sines(11-6-0,8KO) and Les Stevens.

His first two career fights shown in BoxRec were in March and May 1963, a 3rd round TKO win over a nobody, and a 3rd round DQ loss to Len Rocky James. After that his record then jumps 4-1/2 years before showing up again in November 1967 with the win over Stevenson.

The 60's and 70's is my favorite period also. I've been picking up old copies of Ring magazines from the period and am thouroughly enjoying reading the stories and see the photos from back then. You mention the tomato cans, that's pretty much what I'm finding with my search through 1967 heavyweights that need rated. But it's fun. My dream would be to get all the Heavys from the 60's and then the 70's rate. Well, if your going to dream, might as well do it big

Three more losses followed in 1968 against Joe Bugner who was in his 4th career bout, Dave Hawkes(16-5-0,9KO) and Doyle Brown(4-7-0,3KO). I agree. This is a great project to work on and personally the tomato cans you are finding have a common theme of facing the top fighters from that time. Also, their records might not be complete either. A guy that is 0-4 on recorded record could have had many more fights and possibly have a better record. Regardless of that, you do a great job with the info you do have and the work is definitely appreciated by me.

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project

Paul Brown Rating 1 England
HW 1967-69
2 wins / 11 losses / 0 draws / 2 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

BoxRec gives no nationality, but, Brown fought his entire career in England of what BoxRec shows of it. He started his career with 5 bouts in 1967, with wins against Leon Smart(2-4-0,2KO) from Trinidad and Tobago and on December 20 he met up with one Joe Bugner. Bugner was making his professional debute as he and Brown squared off at the Anglo-American Sporting Club, Mayfair, London, England. It turned out to be Brown's 2nd and last career victory as he KO'd Bugner in the 3rd round!

After that, 7 straight lost fights in 1968 and one more loss in Feb 1969 finished off Brown. Losses included to Dennis Avoth, Gene Innocent, Bunny Johnson, Terry Feeley, Bugner twice in rematches, and two guys making their professionel debutes but who's career also amounted to nothing, Rodney Parkinson(4-4-0,3KO) and Jack Cotes(4-13-1,3KO).

Mick Carter Rating 1 England
HW 1966-67
2 wins / 8 losses / 5 draws / 0 KO

Hometown: Birmingham, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Mick started out fighting Light Heavyweight with 8 bouts in 1966. Those included draws with Barry Rodney and Clive Tranter, one win, that against a Ken Lewis(1-6-0,1KO) and losses against Jim Mcllvaney twice, Derek Groombridge, Clive Tranter and Phil Watford.

His draw with Tranter in December 1966 was followed with a win over Tranter in January 1967. Carter then fought 6 more times in 1967 beefing up a bit into the Heavyweight region. Unfortuately all he could muster was 3 draws against Bert Johnson, Mcllvaney and Rodney to go with losses to Terry Daly, Gene Innocent and Terry Feeley.

These are the last 2 of the Englanders that I found. I still got some miscellaneoius UK's from Scotland, Jamaica, etc to do yet. I'll be getting those and one other Frenchman and then I be starting into the Germans and Italians.
