What is up w/ Griffey in OOTP 6.5?
He has gone from a 3.5 to a 1.0 in TWO leagues now... Will he regain his ratings or have I just flushed 37 million down the toilet?

). I was wrong. After the 3rd 10 day sim as the DH... He crashed to a 1.0 with ratings of 5 5 4 4 4. There is no explanation for this. Vinny Castilla is 38 and still maintaining his 2.5 rating...in the same league, so I don't think it's the aging modifiers... I just was wondering if some players were programmed to collapse and Griffey happened to be one of them... Thanks for your patience. Here is the league link. http://www.freewebtown.com/thirdstrike/ Griffey is on the Orioles AAA roster. I guess I'll post the same question here... Should I play Griffey at DH now and hope he regains his ratings, or play him in CF.... or put him in AAA and kiss the remaining 37.5 million on his contract goodbye... Thanks |

Players are not coded to colapse. Just bad luck on your part.

In OOTP 6.5, players are rarely effective past 35 of so with the default settings. I would consider Griffey toast.
I would also expect Castilla to crash and burn within the next year or two. |

It's rare that players - in reality and especially in OOTP 6.5 - excel beyond 35. The best way to get Griffey or any other player to perform well in their late 30's is to cheat. By that I mean you should introduce him to the fountain of youth by changing his age... In my historical sim, when I saw that guys like Ted Williams and Warren Spahn were fading fast around the ages of 36/37 - when in reality they had several more productive - even outstanding - years, I simply changed their b-days to make them four years younger.
Now obviously, this ain't gonna fly in an on-line league or whatever. But if it's just your own little sim, it's the easiest way to align some of your favorite players with real life... 'Course you'll have to tamper with their ratings unless you happen to change their b-days before their big collapse. |

Yeah, your best bet in a new league like that, don't touch guys over 34 unless you want to win before they turn 36. If someone says productive past 36 (and a rare few do), just consider that luck (bad if you let them go, good if you had them).
I find most players start to decline at 32-33, but its only a little. Then, a second wave comes between 34-37 and wipes them out completely. We in NGBL have 6 hitters still actually good enough to play at the major league level age 37 or older. Only 3 pitchers. Using v6.12 with default aging mods.

Let me just add another post here to concur with what others have said. Always trade your 34+ yr old guys for younger talent whenever possible.

Looking through the career leaders last night, I found a fictional 38 yo still very productive. He's gaining on my retired catchers HR mark of 468 and well ahead of everyone with 600 SB and he still has contact in the 60's and power in the 70's. My league is in it's 19th year of existence.
