Dusty Baker, certified baseball genius

Casey Stengel, Earl Weaver and Gene Mauch need to move over. Dusty Baker has shown his limitless baseball smarts once again.

The Cubs have a .318 OBP and are dead last in team OBP in the National League. So what does old Dustball think about that?

"'On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage,' Baker said. 'Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me. The problem we have to address more than anything is the home run problem.'"

Yep, you got to watch out for that basepath clogging.

Someone pays this man run a baseball team? Why?

I tell ya, there's nothing more frustrating than not being able to steal second because there's already someone there.

If he is quoted correctly, about how "clogging up the bases isn't that great to me," then he truly is one of the most stupendously stupid baseball men I have ever heard of, read about, seen, or otherwise been exposed to. Jeesus....what a doofus!

I think this is Dusty's way of saying how much he misses Neifi Perez.

I just looked.

Neifi Perez has 5,411 Major Leage plate appearances, with a lifetime OBP of .298

I am just....speechless.

This is at least the second time Dusty has talked about "clogging up the bases" in this context. It's a correct quote.

Though his dumbest quote of the week is how he wishes he could have a team full of youngsters so he can teach them.

Yeah, he did a GREAT job with Corey Patterson, who in six years with the Cubs, managed a lifetime OBP of ... wait for it ...

.293

But, Dusty being Dusty, he made it all good by hitting him in the leadoff spot.

I looked at how Corey is doing with Baltimore..... all the way up to .311 OBP.

Then I saw his salary. $2,600,000.00 for this year. Jeezus.

Neifi? The guy who was 2 for 18 batting leadoff for the Tigers with no walks and no extra base hits?

Yeah, Jim Leyland may get the "Manager of the Year Award" , and he's giving plate appearances to Neifi Perez. A team only has 27 outs per game. Unfortunately, Neifi gives the Tigers four outs [or three if he has that super-duper single] per game. Also, lets not forget that he habitually grounds into double plays!

Great move Dombrowski

BTW, I do not like how Hendry handles the Cubs, but he was able to get a prospect catcher for Perez without paying Neifi's contract next season. I have to to give credit to Hendry for pulling this one off.

Teach them what? How to ignore player performance? How to manage badly? How to keep grimly hanging on when time has clearly passed you by?

Dusty Baker played the game. Did you guys play major league baseball?

I think the guy knows what he's talking about.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bakerdu01.shtml

Look at his stats when he was playing. 1981 hits and he walked 762 times. But he only scored 964 runs. What were you doing those other 1700 or so times when you were on the bases Dusty? Way to clog up the basepaths Dusty. You suck.

I think that's why he's so found of Neifi Perez. Dusty used to be an OF that can do a bit of everything, so now he needs IFs that can do nothing.

"Wile E. Coyote, super genius!"

If you are GM, do you hire Dusty or Wile? Wile might actually understand OBP.

Lost in all this is Dusty's handling of his young pitchers.

The guy is a prospect killer. And talk is Seattle may have him replace Hargrove next season.
