Deadball lives!

I saw this article on REALLY old-school base ball. I've heard of this before, but it seems as if it's gaining popularity.

Ah yes, baseball the way it was played when I was a kid.

/fixed for historical accuracy.

If you're doing that, you should also take out the no arguing with umpires or charging the mound, because those things were pretty frequent, as was spiking instead of today's pussy-by-comparison double play breakups.

Or beating the hell out of each other and the fans, holding players around the waste while rounding the bases, fand forming the outfield 'wall' and interfering with balls in play etc etc.
And don't forget rampent game fixing and fixing a world championship!
Boy, oldtime baseball sure was grand.

Yeah, I'm several hours away from the nearest games too. It's on my list of things to see, though.

So, where exactly would one find the nearest games? 80% of their website isn't finished.

Definitely go if you can. We had a two day tourney in Hartford that ran over the 4th of July weekend for a number of years (but not since 2004).

It was great fun! They even had a living history angle to it with a guy that walked around in an 1870's Baltimore uniform and would talk with anyone in the crowd about 'his' life as a ballplayer.

I don't think they should have a website. Newspaper, printed leaflets and word-of-mouth are the way to go.

Infractions: 1/1 (1)
Quote:
Before each plate appearance, a batter will declare his "desired strike zone preference" — belt to knee or belt to armpits. If the umpire misses a call because his view is blocked, a team captain can ask for a "gentleman's ruling," in which players involved in the play are to truthfully say what occurred. If a dispute remains, the umpire may ask the cranks for their opinion.
That is awesome!

From the article: "There will be some allowances for modern times, such as protective gear inside uniforms for catchers and lining under the short-billed caps when players bat."

I'm assuming the lining they refer to would be rigid. Otherwise, yikes!

I also think there was a mention of pitches topping out at 70mph.

...ok, I went and looked. Here's the quote: "Because catcher's gloves are tiny and don't have much padding, most pitchers throw about 70 mph to avoid passed balls.

"The pitching game is less a power game and it's more a skill game: changing speeds, moving the ball around, deception," Bouton said."

What I don't understand is, why, if injuries are a concern, are they pitching overhand in the first place?

When did overhand throwing become the norm? 1880s? 1890s?
