It's called the Lahman database. The game guide explains this, and you can download it at http://www.baseball1.com/statistics/.

Or you can download and install rosters that various people have created. You can find information on downloadable rosters in the Mods section of the forums.

It's a modified Lahman-type DB made by message board members to work better with OOTP. Look in the Rosters part of the Mods forum and you'll find some cool stuff that people have been working on.
