Cutting out images?

What is the best method for cutting out images to use in logos?

I use Photoshop Elements 4.0 and/or Gimp2. But I always have a problem, or it takes a really long time to get it right?

Is this just how it is, or is there a shortcut?

I use PaintShop Pro 9.0 and I just use the freehand select to get as close to the edge as possible then I either use the background eraser or if need be I bring into MS paint at 800% and trace around the image in white. then I paint the remainder of the background and save the image. Works for me and I can get an image done in about 5 minutes. I am not sure if the tools you use have a background eraser or not, but it is a real time saver for me.

PSP 9.0 X version costs like $49.99 for the upgrade. I went to a computer shop that had PSP 7.0 for $10.00 and used this and then upgraded to 9.0.

Usually, you can get away with just using magic eraser and then cleaning it up with the regular eraser. Problem with magic eraser is that it will leave the edge jagged, sometimes. So then you have to go into manual cleanup mode.

Sometimes, it can get tricky....like when words are stand-alone under a graphic. For instance...the Colorado Rockies primary logo or something where the letters are smaller and closer together. I go into 1 pixel eraser, quite a bit to do 1 pixel cleanups. It can be a little time consuming, at times.

Man! GIMP sounds tons easier. With GIMP its a matter of making all of the background around the logos one solid color than use one click of a magic wand to outline the picture.

Here's the link to a GIMP conversation getting into this and other issues (I think the cutting out of logos is towards the end)

Thanks guys.

I might see if Inkscape has the background erase tool, and I'll definitely check out that gimp thread.
