So the question is will Liriano survive the All-star game?

Remember Atlee Hammaker? He was an up-n-coming pitcher for the SF Giants. In 1983, he gave up the first grand-slam in All Star Game history to Fred Lynn. It seemed like he wasn't the same after that. He finished the season 10-9 with a 2.25 ERA but wasn't didn't last long in the major leagues.

He wasn't the same after that, or he wasn't the same after blowing out his elbow AND shoulder? Also, Hammaker last pitched at age 37.

Maybe the grand slam scarred him emotionally which manifested as an elbow/shoulder injury. I also remember that he was bit by a spider and had the nickname 'Spiderman' for a while.

He pitched at age 37 but he was just a reliever for the last few years.

I'd wager a fair amount of money that Liriano will not see any action this evening. He was a last minute addition and Guillen's already said he has no designs on playing everyone. This game would have to go 12 innings before Liriano would even sniff the mound.

And now we know that Guillen offered Schilling before finally "settling" on Liriano

Well Liriano didn't get to play. That's a bummer.

Are the player ballot results made public? I'd be curious to see if Liriano finished ahead of Schilling.

edit: Well, here are some of the results, anyways. Niether one finished in the top 5:

i'd be surprised if liriano did finish ahead of schilling but would also be surprised if liriano was next in line right behind schilling.

I would be surprised if Liriano finished ahead of Schilling...but why not right behind him? You don't think the players whose teams faced him would have voted for him?

yes but he hasn't started against many AL teams this year

Texas
Baltimore
Seattle
LA

that's it - he didn't make a start until 5/19 (which makes his 10 wins that much more amazing) and has actually started against 4 NL teams this year

...exactly. Players vote for both leagues. Word about Liriano spread through the NL as well, and so he should have had more votes.

And tonight Hafner showed why he deserved that last All-Star spot more than Liriano..
