free agent in expansion year
Ive reached my expansion year of 1886.
Im releasing all players that have their path blocked (that is the green arrow right?) Now should i make it so only th expansion teams can bid for free agents in an expansion year? The other teams have enough players. Even though i started in 1876 i edited some star players b-days like Cap Anson so he would come in at 18yrs and i have the players from 1870-1875. So not enough players isnt a problem. |

Not sure how to set up the free agent bidding for what you want to do but...
The green arrow actually means the player is ready for the next level (in the opinion of your scouting director.) A red arrow means he is over his head & should be sent down. |

Well its not problem of figuring out how to do it.
Because i could set myself as manager for all teams except expansion but its a matter of whether i should do it or not. Would it effect the non expansion teams too much in the effect that they wont be able to pick up any free agents in an expansion year. |

Oh I see what you're saying... interesting question. I wonder if it would make the expansion teams too good, to let them have the pick of the free agents. Maybe if you human control all the teams, then only bid on guys with the expansion teams until they are stocked, then open it up & let the other teams bid for the unsigned players left, over the final few days of the free agent period...
I too have wondered the best way to hold an expansion draft & have never come up with anything I like. |

I hope that a future version of OOTP (I didn't notice anything on the list for version 5) has some better support for expansion. I really like playing around with league structures. I love watching an expansion team gradually grow to become a good team. There's just no straightforward way to expand in OOTP.

I've actually tried this method out a few times ... it works if you can get the cash base of the new teams set right. I ended up assigning them semi decent tv contracts and laying a bit of cash on them, then letting them bid for free agents for the first 20 days by themselves before resetting all the other teams to computer managed as well to finish out the free agent period.
It worked out well on about the 4th try. The fine line comes in giving them enough cash to sign a good amount of players, but not giving them so much cash that they can sign a ton of really good players straight off and upset the league. The end result will be them signing some decent guys, but most of the really big name players don't sign until the last 10 days of free agency, or won't sign with the expansion teams at all, since I set there market fairly small to start with, so the current balance of the leauge isnt upset too much. I also let them go first in the draft, and have their way with signing good coaches as well. It still took 10 years for the first of them to reach the playoffs, and they generally stunk for the first few years, which really gave them the expansion feel I was going for. Dave |
