April 3, 1946: OPENING DAY!

BRO 7 9 0
BAL 0 7 1
W: Whit Wyatt 1-0
L: Ken Chase 0-1
HR: Pete Reiser (1)
POG: Whit Wyatt W, CG, SHO, 7 H, 0 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 20,903

Whit Wyatt was a picture of efficiency. It felt like everyone was swinging on the first pitch; the guy just threw strikes. Offense was dead despite the 7 hits, just did not do anything once guys got on. Was a fairly close game until Reiser hit his 9th inning homer.

Overall, I was OK with Chase's performance. He did walk 5, which hurt us; I hope that can come down. Brooklyn is a much better club than us; I don't think the gap is this big though.

OAK 6 10 0
HOL 4 10 0
W: Roy Henshaw 1-0
L: Hugh East 0-1
POG: Don Ross 3-4, 3 RBI, GW 2B, BB
Attendance: 22,939

Both clubs came out swinging in the Pacific Coast League opener. Neither Oakland starter Fred Martin nor Hollywood starter Hilton Smith had their best stuff on this day. Martin was gone in the 7th after surrendering 4 walks and 8 hits. Smith lasted just into the 8th, allowing only 1 fewer walk.

The hitter ruled the day. Oakland used 3 hits and a walk in the first to take the lead. Fred Martin, after a lead off walk, k'd both Gathers and Meridius and looked like he was in a groove. That groove promptly disappeared by Martin's own hand.

Mike Kreevich led off the 2nd with a thunderous double. Two walks and balk later, Carmen Mauro blooped a RBI single, keeping the bases loaded. Hilton Smith almost apologized for his rough first with a long singe to the gap. Allie Clark scored, but Eddie McGah, who held at second, was caught by Sam Mele at the plate. The Stars could add no more and the game was tied at 2.

The Stars went up 4-3 in the 4th with Red Barkley's single. Any chance to get more evaporated in Harley Gather's second strike out of the day. Both Gathers and Max Meridius struck out 3 times on the day, stranding runners in scoring position.

After Oakland tied it again in the 5th, the pitchers settled in for the best stretch by the starters the whole game. After the 8th, it was all about the bullpens. On this day the Oaks had the better of it.

Hugh East took over for Rube Melton at the start of the 9th and started strong. Rube got Adams to ground out and Mele to swing at a bad one. With 2 out, the trouble started. Lick Carlisle, the Negro keystone gem, worked a walk. Bill McGhee then singled. The next batter, Don Ross, already holding 1 RBI on the day, lifted a floating drive that Red Treadway could not catch up to. By the time the right fielder tossed the ball back, the Oaks had a 2 run lead and the game.

The Stars did put up a fight against Henshaw in the 9th. With one out, and Red Treadway on first, Harley Gathers collected his first hit of the day. If slugger Meridius could do the same, Hollywood had a chance. Alas, Max struck out to complete a 0-5 day. Mike Kreevich could not get his 3rd hit of the day and the Stars went down in defeat.

CLE 4 13 0
CHI 6 13 0
W: Ben Chapman 1-0
L: Mel Harder 0-1
HR: Peanuts Lowrey (1), Jeff Heath (1)
POG: Peanuts Lowrey 2-2, Run, 2 RBI, 2 BB, HR
Attendance: 28,393

Ben Chapman guts out 8 innings with 13 hits and 3 walks to get the win. Mel Harder was hit just as hard, but wasn't as lucky as the Bruin hurler. Claude Passeau preserved the win with 2 strikeouts in the 9th.

BOS 4 6 2
DET 3 7 2
W: Tex Hughson 1-0
L: Hal Newhouser 0-1
POG: Tex Hughson W, CG, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K, RBI
Attendance: 20,432

PHI 5 13 1
LAL 3 10 0
W: Tommy Hughes 1-0
L: Ray Starr 0-1
HR: Ron Northey (1)
POG: Tommy Hughes, W, CG, 10 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 2 K, 3-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 2B
Attendance: 20,443

The Phillies avoided DiMaggio in all key situations-no at bats with a runner on. Tommy Hughes did everything before tiring in the 9th, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs in that inning. Both the Lancers and Stars played in the Los Angeles area tonight. The Lancers won but the Stars outdrew them (Gilmore holds about 2,000 more than Wrigley).

Attendance has been low in the NAL cities to this point.

NYG 19 22 1
MIL 6 13 1
W: Cliff Melton 1-0
L: Manny Salvo 0-1
HR: Buddy Gremp (1), Johnny Mize (1)
POG: Johnny Mize 4-5, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, HR, SB
Attendance: 20,903

After the first inning, the Giants 1-2-3 in the batting order were 6-6. You read that right, 6-6 in the first 3 outs. Not a good way to sell baseball in Milwaukee. The Braves almost got out of the inning, in which the first 6 men reached base, with two out and pitcher Cliff Melton up. Melton slugged a triple, scoring 3 and the G-men delivered 3 more hits in the inning. 8-0 before Milwaukee's first swings as the home team.

The Giants had a 2nd 8-run inning in the 7th. Every New York position player on the roster got into the game. Johnny Mize was named player of the day, but was he really? Buddy Kerr 6-6 with 4 runs and 2 RBI had a good game. Pitcher Cliff Melton had 6 RBI as well as getting the win, with a sub par outing.

The Braves used 7 pitchers but none were very effective. Bickford, with 2 scoreless, was the lone bright spot on the hill. A couple Braves did have some good days with the bat, but not enough to overcome what was at one point a 14-run difference.

PIT 1 7 0
SFS 0 5 2
W: Johnny Gee 1-0
L: Bill Bevens 0-1
POG: Johnny Gee, W, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Attendance: 22,872

What a duel these two had. The only run was scored in the 6th when Elbie Fletcher took second on Myatt's throwing error. Gustine singled him home, and that was that for the offense.

The Bucs had other chances; Bevens walked 4, but could not get another run. The Seals couldn't even threaten. Until the 9th that is; Max Butcher, starting his 2nd inning of relief work gives Myatt a lead off single. But Spence, Rosen and Lang could not move the runner past second and thus ended the game. Is this a sign that the Seals aren't going to be the pushover I thought they might?

BRO 4 7 2
BAL 8 13 2
W: Bobby Shantz 1-0
L: Hugh Casey 0-1
HR: Hal Wagner (1)
POG: Hal Wagner 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2B, HR
Attendance: 16,096

Ruth gets his first win as a manger! It seemed Hal Wagner was at the center of everything; his fifth inning blast gave the A's their first lead of the year. And he gave it right back with his throwing error in the 7th.

The A's ripped Dodger relief ace Hugh Casey for 4 hits and a walk before the 8th was ended. Then young Ralph Branca came in and walked the first 3 men he faced sealing the Bums fate.

Rookie Bobby Shantz gets the relief win with a sterling inning of work for a shaky but good enough Phil Marchildon.

Buck O'Neill walked and scored in his first major league appearance.

KCB 5 9 0
BUF 1 10 1
W: Denny Galehouse 1-0
L: Al Sima 0-1
POG: Denny Galehouse W, CG, 10 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 18,239

With Satchel Paige nursing a minor arm injury, Denny Galehouse got the opening day call for the Blues. Starting 4 Negro Leaguers (and the Bison starting one) it was still a great day for integration. But the early praises were for an old-line player.

Lloyd Waner, patrolling center at 40, doubled in his first at bat of the year. Moments later, up and coming Gus Zernial singled him home. And then the pitchers were locked in, until the 8th.

Sima had been skirting danger all day with the bases on balls, but it was his fielding that cost him in the 8th. McQuinn reached on Sima's error. After Vern Stephens pinch hit sacrifice bunt, the Blues rolled. After Robinson drew his second walk of the day, Monte Irvin's single tied the score. Pinch hitter Lazaro Salazar, another Negro leaguer, walked setting up the big blow of the day. Johnny Beradino, one of the pre-war Brownies, lined a shot into the right field corner that Roy Cullenbine could not locate. By the time the ball was back in the infield, the Blues lead 4-1 with a runner on third. The Bison put two men on in the 8th and 9th, but could not score.

MIN 4 6 0

HR: Hersh Martin (1)
POG: Sal Maglie W, CG, 9 H, 3 R, BB, 2 K

Good start for the Millers as the Reds just can't get anything going until it was too late.

NYY 6 10 0
COL 5 6 0
W: Bob Feller 1-0
L: Art Herring 0-1
HR: Johnny Lindell (1)
POG: Wally Moses 2-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 2B
Attendance: 24,961

It looked like the Yankees would cruse to victory. Feller was hurling a gem of a game: 2 hits, 9 strikeouts and 1 walk through 7. It was 5-0 and nothing could go wrong.

Except the upstart Clippers scored 5 times against Feller in the 8th. No worries, Johnny Lindell hit a solo shot in the top of the 9th and Feller was back in form in the bottom of.

Hank Greenberg was 2-5 in his Yankee debut. The people of Ohio turned out to see Feller pitching for the Yankees. If the Yanks get this kind of outing (save the 8th) from Feller every time out, they will be hard to beat.

OAK 0 2 0
HOL 4 10 0
W: Eugene Bremmer 1-0
L: Stubby Overmire 0-1
POG: Eugene Bremmer W, CG, SHO, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K
Attendance 17,658

It was all about Eugene Bremmer today. He had a no-hitter through 7 before giving up both hits in the 8th. The Stars made the most of the opportunities they received today, with Allie Clark's 2 RBI making him the hitting hero.

SLS 1 5 0 10th
PHO 2 8 1
W: Chet Covington 1-0
L: Randy Gumpert 0-1
POG: Russ Christopher 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 22,632

Good pitching or bad baseball? The Cowboys turned 2 unassisted double plays when Saints wandered too far from base. Cowboy Sammy Hughes was caught stealing 3rd after leading off the 10th with a double. The Saints had no extra base hits. Not a pretty game, but the people of Phoenix turned out for it.

SDP 1 5 0
POR 6 11 1
W: Larry French 1-0
L: Eddie Lopat 0-1
POG: Larry French W, 7.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
Attendance: 19,042

The Beaver bats could not be stopped and the Larry French buzzed through the Pads line up. French, who did not throw a spring inning, said he'd be ready for opening day, and boy was he. San Diego, who knew they would have trouble scoring, could not move a man past second on French.

Portland on the other hand, was getting contributions from everyone. Skeeter Newsome and Mel Hoderlein both had 2-RBI singles. While Denton and Fitzpatrick showed that 1-2 punch late in the game with a steal and RBI hit.

SEA 1 5 0
SAC 5 13 1
W: Larry Jansen 1-0
L: Tommy De La Cruz 0-1
POG: Larry Jansen W, CG, 5 H, R, BB, 6 K
Attendance: 19,977

The first half of the game the hits were falling like rain, but after the 4th our offense was dead. Larry Jansen started so strong; I thought he might have no-hit stuff. I really like this Salons club, and know it is my best shot for a winner of the 3 teams I am managing.

CLE 0 5 1
CHI 7 11 0
W: Bill Lee 1-0
L: Alfred Smith 0-1
HR: Phil Cavaretta (1)
POG: Bill Lee, W, CG, 5 H, SHO, 1 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 19,185

Tight game until the Cubs teed off in the 6th with 4 doubles. The Indians kept hitting into trouble in key spots. The Tribe had not looked like a contender these first few days.

BOS 1 4 0
DET 3 9 0
W: Dizzy Trout 1-0
L: Harry Perkowski 0-1
POG: Dizzy Trout, W, CG, 4 H, 1 R, 7 BB, 2 K
Attendance: 19,185

The BoSox couldn't do much-because Trout gave them nothing to hit. Trout pitches around 7 walks to even the series at a game apiece.

PHI 4 5 0
LAL 9 10 0
W: Johnny Rigney 1-0
L: Cy Blanton 0-1
HR: Guy Curtright (1), Jake Jones (1)
POG: Jake Jones 3-4, 2 R, RBI, 2B, HR
Attendance: 20,443

The Lancers bomb Cy Blanton early, chasing him with back-to-back home runs in the 5th. The Philadelphia bullpen threw no-hit ball over the last 3.2 innings, but the offense was in neutral today.

Joe DiMaggio is 0-7 as a Lancer.

NYG 12 18 2
MIL 1 10 0

HR: Billy Jurges (1)
POG: Johnny Rucker 4-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B
Attendance: 20,880

The Giants have 31 runs and 40 hits in the first two games against the Braves. On the bright side, Milwaukee did turn 4 double plays on the day.

WAS 6 10 0
SLC 2 9 0
W: Early Wynn 1-0
L: Lou Kretlow 0-1
POG: Early Wynn W, 8 IP, 7 H, R, 0 BB, 2 K
Attendance: 19,022

Lou Kretlow was a controversial choice for the opening day starter; but manager Luke Sewell insisted he was ready. The masses cried for Howie Pollet to get the call. In the end, Sewell showed he knew more than the masses.

Kretlow had a rough first, finding himself down 2-0 before the Cards came to bat. But then, aside from the occasional walk, Kretlow pitched a decent game. But not as good as Wynn who collected 19 ground ball outs in 8 innings of work; the Cards managed only one fly ball out.

With the Senators holding on to a 2-1 lead, Sewell brought in Pollet to thunderous applause from the St. Louis faithful. After retiring Al Evans with a ground ball, 5 of the next 6 batters stroked hits, including Mickey Vernon's 2-RBI triple. The people's hero could not complete the inning. Even more frustrating for the Cards; if they had held Washington in check, Musial's 9th inning run would have tied the score and sent the game into extras.

PIT 5 9 0

Add in the three double plays we hit into, it is amazing we scored 1. If we can't hit a middle of the pack team like the Bucs, what are the good teams going to do to us. I will be surprised if there isn't at least 1 no-hitter thrown against us.

I was actually surprised to see we only hit into 3 double plays, it felt like 5 or 6. We did a good job advancing base runners not so good at bring them home. And the pitching left a lot to be desired-too many walks and too many extra base hits. We actually closed to 5-3 giving me hope that the offense could possibly do something. Then the bullpen, Max Manning to be specific, could not keep the Dodgers off base.

Pitching problems aside, I see some potential in this team. The hitters, for what they lack in power, make up in contact and patience. Hal Wagner drew 4 walks, but only Bob Johnson hit himself to second. We hit and run better than any other team, and that is our best weapon. Now, if we could get hits after we put that man on 3rd, we would be in business.

POG: Elden Auker W, CG, 4 H, R, 2 BB, K 1-1, 3 SH
Attendance: 11,497

With Satchel Paige being bumped again with his arm problems Elden Auker stepped up his performance. The Bison jumped out in the first, and Auker then allowed nothing. Only one of the Blues' hits was for extra bases-they did however take the extra base whenever available.

Attendance: 9,190

Bad signs at Crosley Field for the Reds chance to contend. Attendance for the 2nd game drops to fewer than 10,000 and the bullpen blows the game. The Reds used single runs in the 3rd and 6th to take a 2-0 lead. Vander Meer was removed after giving up a solo shot to Lou Limmer. Ewell Blackwell started out in trouble and it did not end well. Two walks and two singles put the Millers on top. Johnny Humphries finished his second inning of relief for the win.

POG: Red Rolfe 4-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR
Attendance: 18,983

For someone who was supposedly finished, Red Rolfe showed a lot of life in his bat. Monk Dubiel pitches 8 terrific innings for the win; but is he good enough to do this every time out. The Clips used 7 pitchers-3 in a terrible 6th inning when the Yanks plated 7. Marv Breuer was removed because of an injury; his status is unknown at this time.

OAK 5 8 0
HOL 4 7 0
W: Roy Henshaw 2-0
L: Rube Melton 0-1
POG: Ralph Winegarner 7 IP, 4 H, R, 4 BB, K
Attendance 17,455

Things fell apart when the starters left. The Stars, keyed by Harley Gathers' RBI double, scored 3 quick runs. Roy Henshaw put an end to that threat with a strike out and ground ball. No matter, Rube Melton figured to shut the door.

He couldn't, allowing 3 hits and a walk, but all hope was not lost. If Ed Head could keep the strand the two Oak base runners, the Stars would take the series. No such luck, Virgil Stallcup drives in one with a double and Moose Moryn sac fly brings in the fourth run of the inning. Ernie Johnson sent the top of the Stars order down in order.

A day after looking like neither offense wanted to score, both clubs had problems getting outs. Salt Lake City had a trio of relievers throw 4 shut out innings as the Saints knocked the ball all over Montgomery Stadium. Dash Spivey scored 3 times in the winning effort.

The Padres can only muster 5 scattered singles; the Beavers got a 7th inning shot from Aaron Robinson for all the scoring. Get used to it Padre pitchers-the offense has 1 run in 19 innings of play.

POG: Ken Raffensberger W, 8 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Attendance: 12,991

It was a game where I thought we were going to inflict the death of 1000 cuts on the Rainiers. Two run scoring singles (preceded by a stolen base/throwing error) finally broke us through in the 4th. Meanwhile, the kid Mike Garcia was holding the visitors in check.

I don't know if I panicked, or if it was the right move that didn't work. Garcia opened the 7th with a walk-single-walk, loading the bases. Rogers Hornsby sent lefty Paul O'Dea to hit for Joe Rullo. With two lefties and the pitcher coming up, a decided not to let the kid try and work out of it. I went with Dick Stone who promptly gave up a two run single and then a two run double. Lon Warneke got the last two outs of the inning, but the damage was done.

We took a run back in the bottom, closing the gap to 1, but that is all Raffensberger would allow. Take away that 5-batter sequence in the 7th, and we have a shutout.

Ed Sanicki, Salons' back up outfielder, tweeked his hammy. He'll still play, but it will slow him down some.

POG: Chubby Dean 7 IP, 6 H, R, BB, 3 K

Russ Bauers was hit hard all day long, but managed to keep the runners stranded. When the Indians managed to scrape out two runs against Bauers and Passeau in the 8th the only surprise is they didn't get more. The Tribe left 12 men on base, and not for the excellent mound work of Dean and Red Embree, that could have hurt them.

The Tigers get a RBI double from Moe Franklin in the first and build a 5-1 lead in the 7th. Teddy homer in the 8th to start the Sox come back; but it fell just short as Bobby Doerr grounded out with the bases loaded.

A rain delay put the bullpens in early, and the Lancers were able to take advantage. With Kucab on the mound, the Lancers used 2 hits and 2 errors by catcher George Pfister to break the 1-1 tie. The Phillies actually needed 3 hurlers to get out of the 7th. The big swing: Guy Curtright's pinch-hit double.

The Braves needed a long outing from Warren Spahn and they got it. Despite giving up 5 runs, Spahn was able to throw for 9.1 innings. The Braves bats finally could keep up with the Giants. The Braves had the tying run at 3rd when the final out was made. This loss, after the beatings they took the first two games, is a moral victory for the Braves.

Neither starter had it today-Hudson actually lasted to the 5th despite giving up 6 runs. The Cardinal cause was helped by the fact the Birds had 7 walks, but no strikeouts. Musial did make 2 errors at first so all was not rosy. Dickson was able to stretch out to 7 innings, and White and Moisan closed it out.

What a swing in emotions! Sandy Consuegra was magnificent over this game; our offense can't score, so we need great pitching every time out. He nursed that 1 run until the 9th when he started to tire.

I really was trying to get Sandy the complete game, but back-to-back walks loaded the bases. I couldn't risk another pitch, so I brought in Paul Dean. Pinch hitter Ted Cieslak grounded to Frankie Zak . . . who threw the ball away. Thank God only the tying run scored.

Fast forward to the 11th, our relief ace, through a combination of walks and singles, allows 2 runs in the top of the inning. We've scored 2 runs IN THREE GAMES. A very tall order for us; I thought the game was over. With one out, LaPointe doubled to the gap, his first hit of the year. Zak, making up for his error, brought us within 1 with a run scoring single. And then, Dick Sisler, rips one right down the line and out for a walk off shot. The first team home run, the first multiple run inning and game, the first win! There won't be a bunch of wins for this club, but the first one is very sweet!

It was supposed to be a triumph: Satchel Paige's debut in the white league. Bothered by elbow problems late in the spring, Satch was bumped twice before today. But then, well, what might have been.

The Bison surprised Paige with by getting two men on base in the first. Instead of using the moment to crawl back into the game--the Blues scored 4 in the first--Gus Zernial inexplicably tried to steal. Bob Swift cut him down quick. Paige got through the second 1-2-3 and looked like the legend he was billed as.

But, it is not clear what happened, but the results are well known. Paige delivered to Charlie Fox, who grounded to Vern Stephens. Either on the pitch or in his coverage of first, the elbow that slowed the greatest Negro pitcher in spring would cause his removal. While not season or career ending, it is now questionable if Paige can be the ace a contender needs.

Historic note: Lazaro Salazar is the first Negro to homer in a major league game.

The Millers sweep the Reds. Sig Jakucki, the Miller starter, last pitched in the majors in 1936 and had been toiling in a Houston area industrial league. How bad is Cincinnati? Jim Gleeson led off the 9th with a triple, and the Reds could not bring him home. Attendance keeps falling at Crosley.

The New York papers will love this. Put aside for the moment that the Clips held the Yanks to 1 run in the game. The Yankee hitters failed to bring home a lead off double in the first and a 1-out triple in the 10th. Greenberg goes 0-5 and strands 3. The big Yankee hits weren't there.

And Joe McCarthy's decision to pull Wyse after 6 innings, with only 2 hits and 3 walks, was puzzling too. Hank Bauer did pinch-hit, making it to second on a single and stolen base, but does Marse Joe have that little confidence in his offense?

How did Columbus push the winner across? Myrl Hoag, ex-Yankee, singled and stole second. On the play at second, Dickey's throw went into center-Hoag advanced to 3rd, with no outs. Like the Clips in the top half, the Yanks almost got out of it. Sullivan lined out to center, but not deep enough for Hoag to score. Then Ed Boland rolled out to Stanceu. First baseman Rance Pless then singled, collecting his first RBI and Columbus' first win.

What a game! Dizzy Dean made his first start of the year and was pretty good, until he started to tire late. With a 5-1 lead, the Diz gave up two runs, one on a wild pitch, and the Saints had some life.

Flash to the 9th, with the score 6-3, Dee Moore's error at first loaded the bases with two out. Vance Dinges cleared the bases to tie the game. The Cowboys brought in Ellis Kinder who got Spivey to harmlessly ground out.

Bill Fleming started the 9th for the Saints; Joe Tipton ended it. The catcher swung at the first strike he saw and ended the game. Couple of wild games from these teams, they will at least make it interesting.

The Padres had an early 3-0 lead thanks to their legs, but it wasn't meant to be. The Beavers shelled Brazle for 6 runs in the 6th, and never looked back. Otey Clark, one of the question marks in the rotation, recovered nicely from his early trouble to get the win. Charlie Denton is the first created player to win POG.

It was all about double plays today. Since the game featured 19 singles, it stood to reason the team most adept at turning two would have an advantage. The Salons turned 5 to the Rainiers' 1. Our supposed relief ace was roughed up in one inning, had to turn to lefty Stone to get the 1-2-3 9th. Out pinch hitters/late game subs were 3-3 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. I think in the PCL victory will come to who can get to the bullpen earliest.

The Senators and Cards traded runs early and late, but the visitors had the odd run. There was a sense when the Cards tied the game in the 9th, that momentum (and Stan Musial) would carry them to victory. Unfortunately for St. Louis, Bill Moisan couldn't stop the singles. Musial is looking for his first RBI of the season.

We got our butts kicked-but I am proud of this club. Jack Hallett gave up 5 doubles and 13 hits over all and held a great offense to 7 runs. Actually, until they knocked him out in the 7th, he had only given up 4 runs. And our offense, every inning we got a hit, we scored. I'll tell you seeing that 4 go up in the 8th made us cheer. Like I said, we got our butts kicked, but we made a fight of it. I'll take that this season.

It was a very bad day for the Dodger defense: 4 infield errors (two by Reese) and an outfield error. Whit Wyatt was cruising until the 9th, when a couple errors and Geary's first home run chased him. The Reds went with the veteran hurlers and watched Derringer and Bucky Walters give up 8 runs in the final two innings. Reds are 0-4 at home to start the season.

Disappointing game. We take a 3-2 lead in the 9th on Buck O'Neill's pinch hit single. I bring in Winston Lafayette to close out the game. With two outs, Myril Hoag doubles scoring the tying run. Martin Dihigo then leads off the 10th with a home run. Should have been a win.

It was a showcase of sluggers at Nicollet Park as the balls were bouncing all over the walls. Nicollet Park is a good power park, so we should have many games like this. Dave Barnhill was not impressive with his first outing, but it isn't clear how much was him and how much is the park. The Millers are riding a favorable schedule to 4-0 start.

What an ugly game to watch. The Tigers walk 8; the Giants make 3 outfield errors. It was not good baseball today. Game ends like this: With Rip Radcliff on second, Pinky Higgins hit a fly ball to center. Johnny Rucker makes the catch and throws to 3rd, which Radcliff is proceeding towards. The throw goes wild, and Radcliff scores the winning run.

The story should be how Joe Haynes just made the Senators look overmatched, but it isn't. DiMaggio failing to drive in a run (he had two chances with a runner in scoring position) yet again is the story. Joe is at .158-0-0 and 0-6 with runners in scoring position. The Lancers are doing ok with Joe not hitting, so that's got to be a good sign.

We could have won this game; we should have won this game. We gave away our chance to win in regulation in the 6th and 7th. Jim Mallory's error in center cost two runs in the 6th. Reliever Clayton Lambert gave up a pinch-hit 2-run home run in the 7th to the first man he faced. But we fought hard and tied it in the 8th with a 3. We had the bases loaded with no outs in the 9th but Nelson Burbrink was doubled up on a fly ball to right-and the man on 3rd did not advance. In the 16th, Bill Swift just ran out of gas and Williams and Co. scored 3.

The first regular season meeting between the Yankees and Dodgers.; I really intended to do a 'radio' broadcast for this game, but I think I will hold that gimmick for sometime later.

Exciting game though. Hank Wyse is well on his way to being his generation's Ed Whitson, balking home the first Dodger run of the game. Cal Abrams, who reached on Wyse's inning opening error, scored the run. They're not booing; they're yelling "Hooooooks." Hooks was given the lead in the 5th, but gave up a 3-spot in the 6th. The Yankees were done.

Hugh Casey almost imploded again but managed to strand his two walks. Curt Davis was needed to throw the 9th; possible changes coming for the Dodger's pen?

Dizzy Dean was ugly effective; complete game, one walk, and two strikeouts. We had a couple rallies built around an error and a misplayed bunt. Heck, Phoenix even helped by running themselves out of innings. The Salons did not deserve to win, but we'll take it.

With his Rainiers holding a 1-0 lead, but threatening for more, Rogers Hornsby pinch hits for Ed Heusser. Heusser had a 1-hitter at that time, but the Rajah wanted more runs. Josh Gibson and Larry Doby have back-to-back pinch hits to key a 5-run rally. Hornsby didn't want to play them, instead choosing to showcase struggling Lennie Pearson as his "starting" Negro. The production of Gibson and Doby (5-6 combined as pinch hitters, and 8-16 overall) is going to force his hand soon.

The Cubs show what they can do when they get an extra base hit or two. You need more than singles to win consistently. Of course, 4 errors by the Senators don't hurt either.

I like the addition of this type of story to the game narratives. It breathes more life into the dynasty.

That's why you have to follow all the CIE threads. Somethings just don't lend themselves to a full 'storyline' post; it is important detals, but just did not fit with a 250-500 word write up. It could be the seed for a 'storyline' post for sometime down the line.

The Reds could not keep the Blues in the park. Paul Derringer was just overworked, taken out in the middle of the 6th after throwing an ungodly amount of pitches. The Blues pen was much better, needing 6 innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

The Bison bats run off a nice rally in the 4th, and do nothing the rest of the game. More than enough for Jake Mooty in a 180 degree turn from his first start.

The Millers had seized first thanks to playing two of the weakest teams. This was their first game against a 'decent' club and they didn't do so well. Roger just did a better job of stranding runners than Jakucki. Winston Lafayette came in a bases loaded situation to get the final two outs. The A's get on base, they always are threatening to score. I like that in a team.

Atley Donald is one of those "other" pitchers the Yankees are supposed to get wins from. Today he was gone in the 2nd. The Dodger lefties took advantage of the short porch.

POG: Aaron Robinson 4-5, 4 R, 5 RBI, BB, 2 HR
Attendance: 13,522

The Beavers were actually down 4-0 when the bottom of the second started. The Beavers scored in every inning but the first and just battered the Saints. Four different Saint's hurlers give up at least 3 runs. Charlie Denton also had a 5 RBI day for the Beavers.

PHO 8 13 2
SAC 6 8 1
W: Ken Burkhart 1-0
L: Mickey Haefner 1-1
POG: Sammy Hughes 3-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 2B
Attendance: 12,785

Mickey was wild and hittable, not a good combination. The Salons put together a couple nice rallies, but we just didn't have the pitching today.

HOL 2 5 0
SDP 3 9 1
W: Al Brazle 1-1
L: Ray Brown 0-1
POG: Al Brazle W, 8 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 22,870

The Stars strand the tying and go ahead runs on 2nd and 3rd in the 9th. The Padre pitchers do a pretty good job of holding other teams in check.

OAK 3 7 0
SEA 6 13 0
W: Orie Arntzen 2-0
L: Dick Coffman 0-2
HR: Josh Gibson (2)
POG: 2-2, R, 4 RBI, GS
Attendance: 25,393

In a 1-1 game, Josh Gibson collected a pinch-hit single, which should have scored Mike Chartak. The pinch runner, however, could not beat the throw. No problem, Gibson clears the bases in one swing in the 8th. But the big thing was infielder Kermit Wahl hurting his arm. Since the Rainiers will have to purchase the contract of an infielder from the Knoxville Smokies will this make Hornsby rethink his line up?

MIL 5 11 0

W: Manny Salvo 1-2
L: Dick Newsome 0-1
POG: Manny Salvo W, 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 1-4, R, RBI
Attendance: 34,959

Salvo, who had given up 14 runs in 7 innings, started with more of the same: a first inning run to the Sox. The Braves finally did something right, taking Newsome to the woodshed in a 4-run 2nd. Manny did show signs of losing it late, so Vern Bickford closed the door.

POG: George Hennessey W, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, & K
Attendance: 43,430

We looked pathetic at the bat today. The Giants made 2 errors in the first, and we couldn't score. In the 8th, we did load the bases on a single and two walks, but nothing could come of it. Bevens allowed only 1 run on 4 hits and takes the loss.

SLC 4 12 2

POG: Jimmy Outlaw 1-3, R, RBI, HR, SH
Attendance: 32,999

I can't figure out the Cardinals. I think they should run away with the NAL West, but they can't seem to get it right. It was a hit to a guy hitting .107 that sparked the winning rally. Musial failed in every at bat with men on.

DET 4 9 0
PIT 2 7 1
W: Ira Hutchinson 2-0
L: Lefty Wilkie 0-1
POG: Tommy Bridges 5.2 IP, 4 H, R, 4 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 30,402

Tommy Bridges and Johnny Gee had a pitchers duel going, until the rains came. Both teams had to use that pen thanks to the weather. In the end, the Bucs pen was hit hard and the Tigers pull out the win.

Cavarretta and Vaughan both drive in 3 as the Cubs blast the Senators. Cubs' pitching did walk 10, but the Sens made little contact.

KCB 7 14 1
CIN 3 8 1
W: Denny Galehouse 3-0
L: Joe Beggs 0-2
HR: Lazaro Salazar (4)
POG: Lazaro Salazar 1-4, R, 2 RBI, BB, HR
Attendance: 19,998

With the attention in Kansas City focused on the Negro players, Denny Galehouse has quietly put together a strong start of the season. Pulled in the 8th when a bit of wildness exhibited itself he still picked up win number 3. Chet Laabs and Wally Judnich, two holdovers from the pre-integration Browns, are also having hot starts ignored while the casual fan debates the merits of Robinson over Stephens. Salazar has hit 3 home runs in the past two days.

BUF 7 7 1
COL 8 12 1
W: Al Hollingsworth 1-0
L: Al Sima 1-2
HR: Gus Zernial (2), Martin Dihigo (2)
POG: Billy Werber 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2B
Attendance: 18,228

Al Sima had a 3-run lead in the 8th when his own error leads to a rally by the Clippers. Buffalo, which had the best spring training record in baseball, now sits in last place. Dihigo, rumored to be released (to facilitate a trade for Dixie Walker), might have saved his roster spot with his second home run.

BAL 9 14 3
MIN 12 15 3
W: Johnny Humphries 2-0
L: Lum Harris 0-1
HR: Lou Limmer (2)
POG: Sam Jethroe 3-5, 4 RBI, K, 2B
Attendance: 18,154

Not a fun game to watch. The best thing you can say is we hit well. I made the wrong choice in going with Lum Harris in relief and going with him as long as I did. Could have been a win.

BRO 2 8 0 10th
NYY 1 5 3
W: Hugh Casey 1-2
L: Johnny Murphy 0-1
POG: Bob Chipman 8 IP, 5 H, R, BB, K
Attendance: 51,752

The Dodgers sweep the Yankees at the Stadium! Casey has his second straight good outing, while Minnie Minoso (who Yankee scouts wanted) flairs in the winning run after Johnny Murphy can't find the strike zone. Feller was outstanding-he even had the Yank's only RBI.

SLS 13 19 2
POR 8 14 2
W: Harry Brecheen 1-1
L: Larry French 2-1
HR: Mel Hoderlein (2), Vance Dinges (1)
POG: Babe Phelps 4-5, 2 R, 2 RBI
Attendance: 13,783

The streak had to end at some point; the Beavers lose their first of the year. If any of the Beaver relievers had managed to shut down the Saints, this could have been another win for Portland.

PHO 1 7 0

Pretty good pitching duel, both starters going the route with only 1 walk between them.

SDP 3 13 3
W: Mace Brown 1-0
L: Vern Kennedy 0-1
POG: Buck Ross 8 IP, 7 H, R, 3 BB, 3 K
Attendance: 22,873

Bad day for bullpens: the Stars relief ace Ed Head gives up the tying runs in the 9th to send us to extras. In the 13th, two Padres combine to allow 6 runs.

OAK 2 5 1
SEA 3 11 1
W: Bob Malloy 1-0
L: Roy Henshaw 2-1
POG: Tommy De La Cruz 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K
Attendance: 25,370

What a finish. Rogers Hornsby is really being put into a place where he must start Gibson and Doby. With one out in the 9th, Doby doubled putting two men in scoring position. After a Paul O'Dea run scoring ground out; Josh Gibson singled the tying run. Lennie Pearson, the 3rd Negro on the team, singled home Gibson for the win. Which is stronger: The will to win or the old ways?

MIL 1 8 2

Broken record game for the Braves: Fall behind early and do nothing with the bats.

LAL 0 3 2

HR: Jim Hegan (1)
POG: Mel Harder W, 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K

On this wet miserable day the Lancer bats stayed back at the hotel. Joe pulls and Ohfer and makes an error.

W: Jack Hallett 1-1
L: Cliff Melton 1-2
POG: Jack Hallett W, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Attendance: 28,589

Encouraging win. We jumped out in the first with 3 (which the G-Men got 2 back in the bottom of) and kept building on a lead. Felt like a struggle all game to keep the lead and get the extra runs.

SLC 6 15 0 16th
PHI 1 7 0
W: Tom Gorman 1-0
L: Charlie Cozart 0-1
POG: Max Lanier 8 IP, 5 H, R, 3 BB, 2 K
Attendance: 32,973

Cards send 11 men to the plate in the 16th to break open the game. Of the 22 combined hits, none were for extra bases. Tom Gorman gave 3 hitless innings for the win-Redbird hurlers strung 14 scoreless in this game.

DET 2 8 2
PIT 0 4 0
W: Hal Newhouser 2-1
L: Nick Strincevich 1-1
POG: Hal Newhouser W, CG, SHO, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K
Attendance: 17,837

Three starts and three complete games for Hal Newhouser.

CHI 4 7 2

L: Ben Chapman 2-1
HR: Buddy Lewis (1)
POG: Early Wynn W, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Attendance: 15,974

It was a little puzzling when Wynn was removed; he was throwing very well at the time. A bullpen meltdown (3 hits and 2 walks) almost made manager Harris regret the decision. Dutch Leonard gets the final two outs for the Senators.

KCB 0 3 0
CIN 2 7 2
W: Johnny Vander Meer 2-0
L: Elden Auker 1-2
POG: Johnny Vander Meer W, CG, SHO, 3 H, BB, K
Attendance: 19,996

One of the most dominating starts I've seen this season. Vander Meer just kept throwing strikes and the Blues kept hitting them to the outfielders. Both starters were fabulous, but Vandy just was on another plane today.

BRO 5 12 0
COL 4 9 0
W: Hugh Casey 2-2
L: Marv Breuer 0-3
HR: Augie Galan (1), Orestes Minoso (1)
POG: Gene Mauch 4-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B
Attendance: 18,244

Minoso does it again! On a day when Johnny Allen could not throw a strike (that he only walked 5 says a lot about the Clipper bats) the Dodgers needed a boost. Minoso gave that boost. See CIE regular thread for more details.

BAL 1 7 0
MIN 3 10 0
W: Sal Maglie 2-1
L: Phil Marchildon 1-1
POG: Sal Maglie W, CG, 7 H, R, 2 BB, K
Attendance: 18,190

If Maglie pitches like this all the time, the Millers have someone to build around. The former Giants farmhand (and pre-majors Miller) continued his pitching excellence. The averages have been falling for my guys, we need to string some hits together.

SLS 4 10 0
POR 9 16 0
W: Dick Barrett 3-0
L: Dale Jones 0-2
HR: Skeeter Newsome (1)
POG: Jimmy Fitzpatrick 3-5, R, 3 RBI, K, 2B
Attendance: 13,760

The Beavers start another streak, bouncing back with a huge output against the Saints. Barrett could have been better, but this offense forgives a lot of mistakes.

OAK 3 11 0
SAC 7 12 0
W: Mike Garcia 1-1
L: Stubby Overmire 0-3
POG: Ernie Lombardi 3-5, R, 2 RBI
Attendance: 12,789

One day Mike Garcia will be (hopefully) a very good pitcher. Right now, he's good enough, at least with this offense behind him. Eddie Lake with 3 RBI was the other big bat for the Salons. Overmire was going good, and Casey thought he might have an ace at last. Oaks need to do something or they will be way down the roster of PCL clubs at years end.

HOL 4 6 2 13th
SDP 5 9 2
W: Sid Peterson 1-0
L: Tot Pressnell 0-1
POG: Ed Lopat 9 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 K
Attendance: 22,858

Heartbreaker for the Stars: After watching plucky Vince Cressio hit and run the Stars into the lead, Rube Melton has a Rube Meltdown. In extras, Mace Brown works into and out of not one, but two bases loaded jams-only to have Tot Pressnell's wild pitch set up the winning run. The Stars have fallen into 6th place, with the thought to have been powerful offense still trying to get going.

MIL 3 10 0
BOS 0 1 1
W: Fred Sanford 1-1
L: Harry Perkowski 0-3
POG: Fred Sanford W, CG, SHO, H, BB, K, 1-4, R, 2B
Attendance: 28,350

Pete Fox's 5th inning single is all that came between Fred Sanford engraving his name on that list of no-hit pitchers. Perkowski has been the weak link in the Sox rotation, but he should expect to win if he throws as well as he did. Hit hard, yes, but no walks frustrated the Brave hitters.

LAL 1 5 1
CLE 8 9 1
W: Jim Bagby Jr. 2-0
L: Ray Starr 0-2
POG: Jim Bagby Jr W, CG, 5 H, R, 4 BB, 5 K
Attendance: 20,743

Another wild Lancer pitcher leads to many opponent runs on this day. The Indians coupled extra base hits (6 on the day) for 5-run rally to blow the game wide open.

SFS 3 10 3
NYG 1 4 0
W: Johnny Sain 2-1
L: Dave Koslo 2-1
HR: Goody Rosen (1)
POG: Johnny Sain W, CG, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1-4, RBI
Attendance: 28,013

Johnny Sain could win 20 games for this club, and we might not win 50 this season. This is his second straight start with no earned runs; back-to-back errors lead to the only Giant run of the day. The Seals win their first ever series, on the road no less, and head back to Frisco to take on the Cubs to start a stretch of divisional play.

The Seals play Milwaukee and Saint Louis in the coming set of games. Both of those teams are behind us-hard to believe I know-and we could make steps toward a better than expected finish with some solid ball.

SLC 5 8 4
PHI 8 7 0
W: Cy Blanton 1-2
L: Lou Kretlow 0-3
HR: Nick Etten (1), Johnny Hopp (1)
POG: Nick Etten 2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, HR
Attendance: 32,978

Embarrassing effort from the Cardinals on all fronts. The offense did get going late, but down 8-0 is not the time to start hitting. One must start before that point. Blanton came in with an ERA over 10 and kept the Cardinals down until the 7th.

DET 6 13 1
PIT 1 7 1
W: Dizzy Trout 2-1
L: Johnny Lanning 0-2
POG: Dizzy Trout W, CG, 7 H, R, 2 BB, 2 K, 3-4, R, 2 RBI
Attendance: 17,816

Whenever Trout and Newhouser are on the hill, the Kitties have a great chance to win. Baker doesn't have to worry about dipping into his questionable pen and can usually find enough runs to win. Are two arms enough to win a division? As weak as the west is, it may very well be.
