Plague !!! 1924 Presidential Election: Vote Now!

Please vote for who should be the next President of the United States. I have listed their platforms and photos for your perusal. I have also linked their names to their Wikipedia page (or another page with vital info on their actual life).

THE CANDIDATES

DEMOCRAT:
PRESIDENT: PATRICK JOSEPH "P.J." KENNEDY - Incumbent President, Former Governor of Massachusetts
VICE PRESIDENT: JOHN NANCE "CACTUS JACK" GARNER - Incumbent Vice President, Former Congressman from Texas 1902-20

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Kennedy - 66, Garner - 56
  • Kennedy is the first openly Catholic President
  • Champions the rights of immigrants, being the son of poor Irish Catholics who emigrated a couple years before his birth.
  • Believes in education as a key to improve one's lot in life. He dropped out of school as a teen to support his family by working on the docks of Boston. He later attended Boston College and passed the bar.
  • Has been an opponent of prohibition of alcoholic beverages; he owned a wholesale liquor business.
  • Owns a coal company and has served as president of a bank.
  • Coordinated U.S. entry into the League of Nations in 1924
  • Authored a Bill of Workers Rights that provided a set of legal guidelines for Massachusetts employers
  • President Kennedy has wielded the presidential veto power quite liberally, using it to defeat numerous controversial bills, most notably the 1921, Emergency Quota Act, and the 1922 Fall-Pendergast National Resource Leasing Act.
  • Kennedy was the driving force behind the 1923 Fraternal Organizations Registration Act, requiring publication of the membership of any such radical organization. As a result, he constantly receives anonymous death threats suspected to originate from the Ku Klux Klan.
  • Father of Congressman Joseph Kennedy of Massachusetts
  • Vice President Garner has a reputation for being a hard worker with endless integrity, though he is known for being blunt-spoken, if not tactless at times.
  • Garner has proposed a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced Federal budget, though support for it has yet to gain momentum.
  • Garner supports federal intervention in union strikes that threaten the national economy
  • Garner has an affinity for Native American culture, being part Cherokee on his father's side.

REPUBLICAN:
PRESIDENT: CALVIN COOLIDGE - U.S. Senator from Massachusetts 1918-Present
VICE PRESIDENT: NICHOLAS LONGWORTH - U.S. Congressman from Ohio 1907-Present, Minority Leader 1919-Present

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Coolidge - 52, Longworth - 54
  • Ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Massachusetts against P.J. Kennedy in 1916
  • A woman who sat next to Coolidge at a dinner party once bet that she could get him to say at least three words. Coolidge didn't even look at her as he said "You lose."
  • His political philosophy is one of laissez-faire toward business
  • Proponent of spending cuts and reduction in taxes across the board
  • Has argued for federal farm relief, allowing the Federal Government to purchase agricultural surpluses
  • Opposes a federally mandated minimum wage
  • Coolidge was a main opponent of President Lodge's isolationist policies during his tenure
  • Supported Kennedy's move to join the League of Nations, though he feels that the United States should be much more aggressive in exerting their influence in this organization.
  • Longworth is the son-in-law of the late Chief Justice Teddy Roosevelt, with whom he had a chilly relationship. Longworth was much more conservative than the progressive Roosevelt.
  • Longworth is quite popular on both sides of the aisle. During Vice President Garner's tenure in the House, he and Longworth often worked together in a friendly bi-partisan manner.
  • Longworth is considered a leader in foreign affairs and a proponent of high protective tariffs

"A woman who sat next to Coolidge at a dinner party once bet that she could get him to say at least three words. Coolidge didn't even look at her as he said "You lose.""

I voted for Coolidge based on this alone.

I love that story, too. Can't you just picture that in your mind?

And it's official. Kennedy is reelected in a landslide with a late surge. I'll have to address how Coolidge looked like he would win at first in my Notable Events
