Steroids, Smeroids

Give me some old fashioned amphetamines.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2476681

Drops Andy Hawkins' name like it's no big deal. With Jason Grimsley spilling his guts, just what the hell are all these guys doing? I want to go to an MLB party.

Bongs...typo...Bonds record stands since apparently everyone will have admitted to doing drugs in the next month or so.

"Now I'm walking around, I'm going, 'I don't know how I'm going to do this. There's no way that I can go play this game today.' I ran into my teammate who I knew had some of the 'little helpers,' as they called them.

"He said, 'Take one of these. It should help. It'll take the edge off.'"So sure enough, I took one. He goes, 'OK, you can take two, but no more than two.' So I popped one more, and I went out and went 3-for-4 with two homers."

According to retrosheet.org, Leyritz is referencing a Saturday, June 30 game in 1990 against the White Sox, where he went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBI.

His recollection of the day isn't perfect spot-on, however, as Mattingly played first base and Leyritz manned third.
So amphetamines affects your memory too! This is dangerous stuff.

I'm bothered by the fact that he named Mattingly. Sell yourself out all you want but that's beyond lame. I hope he wasn't planning on a career in coaching or management.

He didn't say Mattingly gave him anything...he just said Mattingly told him he was playing when he thought he wasn't.

Same goes with Hawkins. He was just drinking with him the night before.

By all accounts, Leyritz is a complete ass. I mean, the guy refers to himself as The King and he's not being ironic.

Strip the Yankees of the 96 World Series Champions. Leyritz would have never got up enough bat speed to hit Wholers. Put an asterik in the record books for the Yanks.

This is what bugs me, and this is not an attempt to hijack this thread or criticize anyone who has already posted. But seriously...

Why is this news worthy? Especially to true baseball fans? Aren't there better stories out there? Couldn't one of the major media outlets simply decide to report the sport without all this crap? I know there are those out there searching for reasons why baseball is tainted which; of course, makes stories like this sell. I also understand each news agency's attempts to "one-up" the competition. But, I, for one, don't care to a certain extent. I'm not advocating the drug use I'm just more interested in the BASEBALL. I mean; after all, this is "Talk Sports." Please don't flame me by stating that "This IS sports in the 21st Century." My point is that it doesn't HAVE to be. Why can't we as true fans focus on the game itself. I don't care who Jason Grimsley names, I'm interested in seeing the Rangers and Tigers sitting in first place. My beloved Reds are in dead-heat with the Cardinals and the hated Braves are almost 10 games behind the Mets! I sat at my daughter's softball game last night listening to the Rangers-Red Sox game and talking to another father about the Rangers chances this year. Steroids never came up and my point is, "Why should it ?" !
The comment about this being "Talk Sports" is not meant to flame anyone. I just think that these stories are major stories because someone acts interested. I'm not. I just wish there was some way to let the powers that be know that I'm not watching and I don't care about Jason Grimsley and/or steroids.

I hope you're not going to compare caffeine to the stuff these guys were taking.

(I'm not flaming either, just explanining my rationale)

There are plenty of threads talking about baseball standings and what not. This is news worthy, like it or not, because it takes the whole performance enhancing scandals out there and gives insight to a new perspective to it.

You don't think the rampant use of illegal drugs in baseball has any impact on what translates into the standings? I think it does and when we start hearing about unheard of drug use in MLB all of a sudden (non-steroid) a thread is deserved.

Very valid points. I never wanted it to sound like the thread was not warranted. I almost mentioned you by name in my explanation that this was not a flame. Your points are well taken. Your opinions are well-thought out and deserve a post. My complaint and rationale is that IF (and that's a huge IF in today's world) these things were not as prevalently reported as they are today, we could still have a little bit of the "ignorance is bliss" approach to baseball. Not everyone wants that and I understand that. That's why I said that this bugs ME. I'm sure that if this is as widespread as rumored then, yes, the standings are in some way affected. I still hold to the opinion that a ton of "news and information" is not always a good thing. Also, I don't see the "scandal." From the beginning of sports there have been those who have sought any advantage available. These guys just got caught. I say, "End of story, let's get back to the game." Others have a problem differentiating the two...I understand that. Either way, my opinion is not going to change that of the masses. However, I don't mind discussing opinions with you in a rational manner. Once again, NO flame was ever intended towards your post. In retrospect, I probably should have started a new thread.

I don't see much of a difference between taking an upper pill versus drinking 4 energy drinks or what have you.

I guess I'm not a true baseball fan, since I'm concerned with the integrity of the game. Oh well...

Except that doesn't actually come close to addressing my point. Energy drinks are significantly more than a super dose of caffeine, though they're still not speed.

Based on what I actually said, if there was no difference then there wouldn't be two different pots of coffee. Just having those are proof enough that the "leaded" was significantly "better" at doing the job.

They are illegal. We are not talking about the over the counter stuff you can buy at the local gas station.

I know. I just don't care. It seems silly to me to get worked up over amphets.

Yes, unless you have ADHD. (Aderol is basically synthetic meth amphetamine)
