I have owned OOTP4 for a couple of months now and can't seem to keep playing it, I don't know what it is, but I just can't seem to have fun. What can I do to get the most enjoyment out of it? Join an online league or what? Thanks

Well, I enjoy it in every way I can.
Currently I have a career league going starting with the 1991 SF Giants in which I sim two weeks at a time. I am also in an on-line league with the DET Tigers starting in 1964. And I play out every game in a career league starting with the 2002 KC Royals. Each one has its own flavor and I'm having a blast in all three. (Even though my royals suck as bad as they do in real life). If you think the game is going too fast and don't enjoy the simming aspect, then play out every game and you should get a better feel for your team and the atmosphere of the league. However, if you're not having fun because it moves too slowly, then sim a couple of weeks at a time and review the box scores and stats that way. If you're bored playing a solo league, then an online league is absolutly the way to go. You can interact with other GMs in your league and it feels more like a "real" league (i.e. trades and free agent signings seem more competetive). And don't forget the oppourtunity to play with a fictional league with computer generated players, or playing a historical league with the Database import players. Also, be sure and check out any number of the great mods available from this community as they really do add to the fun of the game. |

All I have to do is turn it on..................
Don't know what you're doing, but you're missing something if you don't have fun playing this game. |

Maybe the game isn't for you. Tell us what you're looking for and maybe we can point you in the right direction.
Online leagues are great. I just finished my first season with an online league and I had a blast. I've joined a couple more leagues this week because I think it's a whole lot of fun. I'm using online leagues to quench my thirst for fantasy baseball. I'm having a blast and saving money while I'm at it. [ 05-23-2002, 11:51 AM: Message edited by: spleen1015 ] |

it all depends on what you are looking for.
There really aren't too many limitations, you can create any kind of league with any players from history to fictional.

I found I did not really enjoy the game until I had settled on a particular way to play (historical sim, fictional league, etc.) and started to develop a history with that method. It took me a while -- I tried several different things (replay of 1950, 24-team fictional league, 8-team fictional league, managing every game). I also found I was distracting myself with all of the game's add-ons (logos, park graphics, photos, etc.), and this often got in the way of actually playing the game.
But, eventually,(thanks to Tiger Fan's inspiring work on HOB) I finally settled on a alternative historical replay starting in 1916 with a merger of the Federal League and the AL/NL where I sim each season and watch the important pennant race games and world series. (I also have ignored all of the graphics stuff for now, which has helped me stay focused). I came up with a back story for the league and have tried to develop story lines to follow, about players, teams or anything I find. I have tried to write as much of this down (which has slowed my simming but increased my enjoyment of the game). I've got through 1916 and 1917 and enjoyed them tremendously (esp. the 1916 pennant race, which featured 12-inning and 16-inning games in the last weekend of the season). I miss managing individual games for a particular team, and will likely inject myself as a manager at some point in the future. I find that creating storylines for players really helps me to keep coming back. It really changes the way you approach games if there is an angle to watch for. For example, Christy Mathewson is at the end of his career in my league. In 1916 he was injured on July 4 (of all days) for the season. His team (Newark) fell just short in making the Series. So I took a keen interest in his 1917 campaign. Well, he was relegated to the minors and did not play much at all, but his club won the pennant. In Game 1 of the Series, the Newark starter is lost to a back injury, and the opposition (Chicago White Sox) erase a 3-run deficit and looked posed to take the game. Who does the Newark skipper bring in to save the day? Matty himself. And the first batter Matty faces? Shoeless Joe Jackson. It was a real thrill, and fit nicely into the story i was developing. (I will post the outcome in Dynasty section when I finish the write up). Obviously this approach may not be for you, but I found that by trying different things you might find something you like. Cruising this board for ideas is also a big help in getting a fresh look at the game.

I have to admit I was skeptical too when this I downloaded the ver. 4 the first time. Now, I'm addicted. Why? I haven't played in an on-line league yet, but I havea career league that I run simultaneoulsy with another league that I compare.... my teams get close to winning their divisions... but I like to compare how well I manage in comparison...and who performs in one league or the other...emerges as a star or gets traded about.... basically, I've concluded that I suck as a manager..I'm a great GM and scout... and I go to bed at night thinking about who I can trade away or get.... needless to say my beautiful wife is unimpressed .... I think I've got some sort of wierd illness...
