SALTILLO, MEXICO - Tonight, a capacity crowd at the Arena Progreso saw Jem Carney solidified his hold on the #1 position in the lightweight division with a 10 round annihilation of Harry Force. Carney had Force down 4 times in the bout, with the courageous Force rising for more punishment each time until the 4th knockdown turned the lights out on Force's evening. With the win Carney maintains a perfect 21-0-0 (14) record. The loss was Force's second, as he falls to 17-2-2.

Marvin Hart won a close UD victory over wily old Tom Allen in an entertaining undercard bout.

BERLIN - The Waldbuhne, hosting the second of six UoLBA January fight cards, witnessed a spirited night of boxing that ended in disappointment and controversy.

The feature event of the night was a middleweight battle between undefeated slugger Young Mitchell and tough Bill Gabig. Gabig came out in the first and put the hurt on Mitchell, coming at him from every direction. Near the end of the 1st round, a raking left tore open a cut over the right eye of Mitchell. The cut was not particularly severe, but it was in a bad spot for Mitchell, as blood began seeping into his eye, giving him some trouble seeing his opponent.

Mitchell seemed dazed through the first two rounds, as Gabig was the more active fighter. But the Young Mitchell everyone came to see emerged in round 3, turning the tide of the match. Round 4 belonged totally to Mitchell, who began to raise a lump under Gabig's left eye. Round 5 continued the punishment, and by round 6, the swelling around Gabig's eye was becoming a serious impediment. Near the end of round 6, Gabig reopened the cut over Mitchell's eye, a development that caused referee Medina-Solar to pause the action and consult the ring doctor. Fortunately for fight fans, the bout was allowed to continue. Mitchell continued to dominate the 6th, and continued the punishment in the 7th, targeting Gabig's left eye until it was barely open by the end of the round.

At the outset of round 8, it was evident that Gabig was out of gas, and that Mitchell was just getting started. A brutal uppercut by Mitchell dropped Gabig to the canvas with a minute gone in the round. Gabig rose midway through the count to continue. A minute later, a Mitchell combination dropped Gabig again. This time, Gabig lurched to his feet at the count of 5. Somehow, Gabig weathered the round, but it appeared only a matter of time before his night would be over. His left eye was barely open, and he was obviously showing significant fatigue.

At the outset of round 9, the referee looked closely at the swelling around Gabig's eye, and decided to let the bout continue. With 12 seconds gone in round 9, a sweet uppercut by Bill Gabig sent Mitchell reeling into the ropes. It also reopened the cut over Mitchell's eye, which began to bleed profusely. The referee stopped the action and consulted the ringside doctor, who determined that the cut was too severe to allow the fight to continue. Amid catcalls and whistling, Bill Gabig was declared the winner by TKO.

A review of the judges fight cards after the bout showed a clear preference for Mitchell's performance, with 2 judges indicating a 78-71 tally, and 1 judge seeing it 77-72. Mitchell was furious after the bout, feeling with some justification that he was robbed. As a result of tonight's decision, Mitchell falls to 20-1-1, while Gabig climbs to 16-1-4. Mitchell drops from the #1 spot in the division, relinquishing it to Bert Lytell, who won on an undercard bout in tonight's action.

SYRACUSE, NY - If preliminary indications are to be believed, the newly-initiated lightweight division of the UoLBA will offer a never-ending tide of intrigue in the coming months. Tonights Main Event at the War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse pitted #4 George "Kid" Lavigne against eleventh ranked Mike Leary. Lavigne wasted no time prevailing upon his opponent, dominating the early rounds of the fight. By round 8, Lavigne was firmly in control, winning just about every round in the eyes of most observers. Round 8, Lavigne's devastating right came home to roost on Leary's chin, sending Leary crumpling to the canvas. Most thought Leary would not rise, but the count of 8 found him shakily on his feet and ready to continue. The round ended with Leary severely dented but still standing.

Round 9 held a surprise that no one who had witnessed the first 8 rounds would have predicted. Lavigne, round 8's knockdown still in his mind, charged across the ring to finish the job at the outset of the 9th frame. Leary, with one bomb left in his arsenal, decided to deploy it on the advancing Lavigne. The winging right hook caught Lavigne flush and down to the canvas he went, his night, and thoroughly dominating performance to that point now over. A post-fight review of the judges cards showed Lavigne ahead 78-73 on all three cards. Lavigne, considered a contender in the division, was silent in his disappointment after the fight, falling to 11th in the division. Leary moves to 9th with his victory over Lavigne.

On the undercard, an impressive Joe Goss dispatched Jake Kilrain in a unanimous decision victory.

Agreed. Although disappointing, neither loss is a disaster for either fighter. With the tournament in June for the belt and only 21 fighters in the middleweight and 30 fighters in the lightweight divisions, odds are both guys will get into the tourney and have a reasonable chance of challenging for the UoLBA belt.

That's one of the times I step in a little bit ... if I get to the last 3 rounds and a guy who is cut (and it's been reopened) is way ahead on scorecards, I take over his round and go with protect cut the rest of the way .... I only do this if even losing the last 3 rounds won't cost him the fight.

Do you mean you take over his strategy and cover up, or is there something else I can do to protect the cut?

I'm not sure what version of the game your using but the newer ones have an extra strategy called protect the cut.

It appears the Universe of Leather Boxing Association is no more. A hard drive crash along with a short-sighted commish who failed to get a backup for any of the league files adds up to complete devastation.

I'm getting a new drive in the next week or so. Then will be the arduous process of getting things reloaded as I can. Right now I don't even know how or if I'll be able to reload TBCB without purchasing another license.

At any rate - if, and when things get more or less back to normal, I will likely try my hand at a Uni again. Perhaps more or less patterned after the UoLBA.

I've had lots of fun and appreciate all of the encouragement, etc. I'll definitely be back. Hoping it will be soon.

Now that I am over two years in I backup religiously ... at least once a day to my harddrive and at the end of every sim month to a zip drive ... worst case scenario is I have to repeat a month.

Trust me, "backup" will be my middle name this go around! The worst part of all is that I've been around computers a looooong time and I certainly know better based on the horror stories of others. Something about "experiential" knowledge that really sticks with you...

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. I'm living vicariously through some of the other excellent uni's on here. But first chance I get, we'll be back at it. I'm trying to decide whether to recreate based on recollection, or just start anew. I guess I'll figure it out when the time comes.

Mix it up Matt take what you liked from your first and put new things in .... If I were to start over I would have used Random Start Dates so I could use some new guys also ....

I was guilty of the same thing for the first year or so of my uni ... thought a crash will never happen to me ... but with the new version I wanted to continue my universe through beta and that's when I started saving it ... now with the ratings record crash bug, it's even more important.
