The fact that Alex Rios, Nick Swisher, and Eric Chavez aren't going to be starters is complete and utter BS.

Rios and Swisher certainly deserve some recognition, but Chavez isn't even the second best third baseman in the AL this season. Mike Lowell is hitting .321/.373/.571, Alex Rodriguez is hitting .293/.396/.539, and Chavez is only hitting .275/.367/.539. You could even make a pretty compelling argument that Troy Glaus is having a better season than Chavez.

So defense doesn't count then?

Chavez has the least amount of errors and highest fielding percentage.

A-rod has EIGHT errors already.

You're going to have to come up with something a lot more compelling than fielding percentage to convince me that Chavez's defense is so much better than Rodriguez's (or Lowell's, or Glaus's) that it makes up for the obvious offensive disparity.

Wasnt it a couple of years ago that the yankee's had what 5 starters in the all star game ? Granted i know it's basically who the fan's vote in etc.. But wouldnt the all star game be better if at most you had 2 guys from 1 team starting .

Chavez has 2 errors all year.

The next closest of the 4 in question has double that.

I'm too busy right now to look up defensive metrics though, so I have to go by what I can glance at quickly.

All 4 of them have an OPS over .900, the only 4 3B in the AL.

Still, as an A's homer, this is the first year that Chavez has actually deserved consideration at all! gimme a break already!

Swisher and Rios are pretty huge snubs though.

Chavez also has significantly fewer defensive chances per inning than Rodriguez or Lowell. Although it's not possible to say definitively without play-by-play data, that's often a pretty good indicator that he just doesn't get to as many balls as the other two. If he's giving up more hits, than the fewer errors don't do his team much good.

Rubbing it in that Georgie decided to sign Shef instead of him.

Lowell is an excellent defensive 3B.

Why do people still even care about AS voting? Can't we just go cut and paste complaints from the past 15 years and just change the names?

Last I checked, fans want guys who can hit, not guys who field exceptionally well. This is an All-Star game, you aren't going to convince fans to vote for a guy because he's only made two errors. That's what Gold Glove is for.

I should caution all to remember that these are only the early returns.

The fans are always stupid. The best you can hope for is that the guys who deserve to go get picked as the reserves.

maybe fans from one league should try to stuff the ballot box of the other league with sub-standard players.... if the winner of the ASG gets home field advantage in the WS, might as well try to get some no-so-all-stars on the other league's team....

I'd bet that the people who want the absolute best players to be there no matter what aren't MLB's main target for the all-star game.
