Some free publicity

I'm going to run a press release writeup about OOTP2006 in the recreation section of the weekly military newspaper I layout. So I'm doing what I can to spread the word {and hoping this free publicity earns a free early copy of the game Hey, I can hope, can't I?}

Me too! Duffy, don't forget to send us 2 copies! Now, um, which military weekly newspaper is it that we write for again... ?

Just kidding, but that sounds actually pretty cool. I hope old Duffy does send you a free copy, so long as you post your article here.

if anyone deserves a free game it must be the guy who is opening "Duffys

Tavern", a real time OOTP chat room on a new OOTP site>

Free beer

Make sure you get the text directly from OOTPD. They've had a slight problem with people writing "press releases" on their own and giving it to various gaming sites.

Here's an "still-in-progress" copy of the page. Basically I just used most of the press release and a few screenshots. The file has been compressed a lot to fit on here, so obviously the actual photos and logo will be much, much better quality when it runs.

The Flagship is actually quite a nice little newspaper and a lot of sailors and Marines will be reading his writeup.

Considering that Marc asked us to "get the word out" I don't think that's a particularly fair statement.

Agreed. Plus, I don't think the guy realizes just how much down time Marines and Sailors have when they are deployed or even sitting in their barracks. It's a market that the word should definitely be pushed to.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't ALL publicity "free"? I mean, isn't that the definition of publicity?

And if it weren't, you are asking for some sort of payment in return, then wouldn't that cancel out the "free" part?....

Anyways, I'm just trying to bust your balls. It looks good.

Publicity just means public information. Advertising is publicity. There's nothing about it that has to be free.

I've learned differently from my marketing class. Advertising and publicity are completely different in that publicity may cost a bit but it doesn't cost the company anything. For example, a press conference and news release are classified as publicity but not advertising, and paid advertisement on TV is not in the same group as publicity. Or am I just wrong?

No, that's right. That's how we've been taught at TCU in the marketing classes.
