this reminds me of the story of Ruffian. she was a filly with tremendous potential. broke down in a match race.

Go For Wand was the horse euthanized on the spot during the Belmont I believe

You are correct, it was Go For Wand. It was at Belmont, but not during the Stakes though. I recalled incorrectly. It was during the Breeders Cup Distaff.

Sad, regardless.

Why cant the owners who made lots of money off him pay for a prosthetic hoof? Can't they just amputate where the vessel blockage is? I dont understand why they have to kill the horse???

They will do everything possable to keep the horse alive. He is worth way more as a stud than he would ever make racing. He would have retired and gone to stud at the end of the year anyway. That's how the owners get thier investment back.

I don't think simply keeping him alive means he'll be able to stud. When colts breed, they stand and put their weight on their back ankles. Even if surgery allows him to stand, it doesn't mean he'll be able to breed.

All we can do now is hope for the best.

Do they even bother setting the horses up to screw anymore? Seems with all the modern crap around, they probably hook up a $45 million machine which would extract his horse batter. Then it goes into some lengthly process where they inject it with jet fuel, The Cream, and maybe some super atoms or something (I'm not good with that science stuff, so it sounds good at least). Then they probably wedge a $75 million time-release-capsule up the female horse's niegh tunnel.

I'm scared at the thought you put into this.

They still do it to keep the business going in smaller states and with lesser stallions. If they could just ship the sperm from the really nice horses anywhere they wanted, nobody would breed a horse in Washington State to a local stallion in order to avoid the costs and risks of shipping a horse to another state to be bred.

basically what I thought in response as well minus the extremely long explanation...

this is why horse racing needs to be gotten rid of

I'm sure the owners care about their horses, but they're basically just commodities. If Barbaro was a 50-1 longshot and not the derby winner, he would already have been euthanized.

The good ones are commodities. I've found that owners tend to actually care more for the cheap claimers - in the sense that they get emotionally attached to them. When they're good, the most important thing is protecting and getting the most out of their investment. When they're cheap, they're more like pets and the people hate to lose them to a claim or injury.

The 5-hour surgery is reportedly nearly complete. Hopefully, it will prove successful and the horse will survive.

If you don't want to discuss horses or horse racing, there's no need to click on the thread.
