1918 Prospect Watch: ARNOLD "SLUG" COLFAX

Colfax is the latest in the crop of young sluggers who have concentrated on putting the ball out of the park, and he's one of the best yet, attacking the ball with a fervor bordering on rage. Critics say that this trend will ruin the game, but all teams are eagerly recruiting these musclebound heroes of the diamond. There are rumors that the search has even spread into the pitching ranks to find these hidden batsmen. Reports out of Brooklyn say that the Perfectos may even try a young relief pitcher from AAA named Babe Ruth in the outfield! Good luck with that project. It's much more likely that the future homerun hitter will be found the old fashioned way...in the draft. Young "Slug" could be one of those men.

1918 FINAL STANDINGS

Weren't the Scarlets supposed to be over and done with? The Chicago Colts led most of the way with the top staff in the majors and a dominant offense featuring Crush Holloway, Louis Santop and Irish Meusel, but wily Cincy came on at the end and tied them in the last week of the season, forcing a one-game playoff for the pennant. The Colts would have preferred one of their two aces, Joseph Tempkin or Johnny McGraw, to start the game, but unfortunately they had to go with 10 game winner Chief Chouneau. The Scarlets went with veteran "Gulfport Jack" Ryan and in the end, experience was all they needed. They thrashed the Colts 21-2 in the playoff to proceed on to their 9th World Series in 12 years! Elsewhere around the league, the Brooklyn Perfectos decided to try young pitcher Babe Ruth as an outfielder in mid-May. He was so successful that he will most likely never pitch again. In nearly 50 less games, Ruth came close to matching the HR total of Pittsburgh's Sal Narcino, who had 24.

1918 may go down as the greatest season in the history of baseball. As in the Continental League, a one-game playoff was necessary to determine the winner in the Federal League. Last year's champion Buffalo Barons led most of the and found themselves 6 games up on the St. Louis Maroons with only 9 games to go.....and then the bottom dropped out. Sparked by a fiery speech from team leaders Tris Speaker and Ray Chapman, the Maroons rolled out 9 consecutive wins, tying Buffalo in the final game of the season. In the playoff, St. Louis won in dramatic fashion on a walkoff 3 run homerun by "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, who appears to be finally coming into his own at the venerable age of 28, after being touted as the best prospect in the minors for the last 9 years. Now it's onto the World Series to face the team that swept them 4 years earlier.

LAZARUS "GERMANY" DAVID, SS, BROOKLYN PERFECTOS, 34 Years Old - Despite worries that he might be fading, Lazarus "came back to life" (had to say it) and proved that he has a couple more years left in him. Hopefully he can last long enough for the Perfectos to make it to the postseason.

1918 WORLD SERIES

10/2/1918 - GAME 1 SCARLETS 5 - MAROONS 3, 11 innings

Cincy lost starting pitcher Bert Gallia to an injury in the first inning, but the still managed to hold off the Maroons until a St. Louis rally in the bottom of the 9th sent it to extras. In the 11th, the Maroons' defense broke down, allowing 2 unearned runs and handing the win to the Scarlets.

10/3/1918 - GAME 2 SCARLETS 1 - MAROONS 3

Bingo Demoss led off St. Louis' 3rd inning rally with a homer and Harry Heilmann followed soon after with an RBI double, enough to tie the series up at one game apiece before they head back to Cincinnati.

10/5/1918 - GAME 3 MAROONS 1 - SCARLETS 4

Frank Allen pitched a complete game 5 hitter to give Cincy their second win of the Series. Jack Smith and Doc Wiley led the Scarlets with 2 hits and 1 RBI apiece.

10/6/1918 - GAME 4 MAROONS 6 - SCARLETS 5

Down 4-0, the Maroons rallied for 3 runs in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to nip the Scarlets by one run and tie the Series up at 2. Jelly Gardner and Cy Perkins led the way with 3 RBI each.

10/7/1918 - GAME 5 MAROONS 8 - SCARLETS 2

Five runs in the 5th put the Maroons up 6-1, and allowed Pat Hynes to coast the rest of the way. Ray Chapman led the team with 3 hits and Joe Jackson knocked in 3 with his sole hit. St. Louis heads back home with a 3-2 Series lead.

10/9/1918 - GAME 6 SCARLETS 12 - MAROONS 5

The St. Louis defense took the day off, giving up 4 errors and rolling over in submission as the Scarlets pummeled them 12-5. Doc Wiley led Cincy with 4 hits and 3 RBI.

10/10/1918 - GAME 7 SCARLETS 2 - MAROONS 6

The Maroons got their sweet revenge for the 1914 sweep by taking Game 7 and the crown. Bernie Duffy was dominant in his second win and Bingo Demoss had 4 hits to set the table for the other batters.

January 5 - The subterranean Justizvollzugsanstalts (JVA's), or POW jails of the former D.H.R.V., are discovered by occupying Russian and Ottoman forces. It is eventually revealed that many of the captives, most of whom were political prisoners, were killed in mass executions and thrown into large charnel pits on the lowest levels of the prisons, hundreds of feet beneath the earth. Many man-made chambers with implements of torture are discovered as well. The largest of the JVA's is housed in Klaussteinhöhlen-Komplex, a vast series of natural caverns in central Germany. The final tally of the dead exceeds 75,000.
January 11 - Led by Congresswomen Jeannette Rankin and Carrie Chapman Catt, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly pass a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would grant the right to vote, regardless of gender by a vote of 326-52.
January 12 - President Lodge voices his support for the Women's Suffrage Amendment and commends the House of Represntatives for their action, urging the Senate to quickly follow suit so that it may be submitted to the states for ratification.
January 22 - Pope Leo XIV suffers a stroke while in captivity. Paralyzed and unable to speak, he is escorted to Rome where he convalesces in the Vatican, which has been returned to the possession of the Catholic Church.
January 27 - The Senate passes the Women's Suffrage Amendment by a vote of 67-27. The main resistance comes from the Deep South Democrats and Populists.
February 19 - Joseph Stalin reappears in Kiev. He begins a campaign to garner support for Ukraine independence from Russia.
March 1 - California and Montana become the first two states to ratify the 18th Amendment.
March 6 - The Finnish Air Force is founded. The blue swastika is adopted as its symbol as a tribute to the Swedish explorer and aviator Eric von Rosen who donated the first plane. Von Rosen had painted the Buddhist symbol on the plane as his personal lucky insignia.
April 3 - Russian Premier-General Kornilov officially enlists the Cossacks to pursue and eliminate the Bolsheviks who remain in rebellion.

September 15 - President Lodge addresses the nation in response to the panic caused by the Spanish Flu, confirming that it has reached pandemic levels, but stressing the fact that it was nowhere near the levels of the Haemorrhagic Flu. Precautionary measures developed during the last decade of the 19th century minimize the exposure rate in the United States. Even so, nearly 30,000 U.S. citizens die by year's end.
October 12 through November 4 - The volcano Katla erupts in Iceland.

November to December - The Spanish Flu sweeps across Russia, killing well over 2,000,000 individuals.
December 11 - Latvia joins the C.C.P.
December 28 - Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef dies after a long illness. His heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand is named Emperor in a ceremony the next day in Vienna, Austria. It is later revealed that, for the past two years, he had been making many of the decisions that had been attributed to Franz Josef, who, unbeknownst to the populace, had been incapacitated since 1916.

It will remain a fact of life that ~10-15% of all births do not survive beyond the first few days. Adults have gained an immunity, but I do not plan on a cure for many decades. It may be called the flu, but it is not truly influenza, but rather a constantly mutagenic disease.

This may be scientifically inaccurate, but I see Haemorrhagic Flu as a series of regularly changing diseases, with the only cure being successful exposure.

The Chicago Colts led most of the way with the top staff in the majors and a dominant offense featuring Crush Holloway, Louis Santop and Irish Meusel, but wily Cincy came on at the end and tied them in the last week of the season, forcing a one-game playoff for the pennant. The Colts would have preferred one of their two aces, Joseph Tempkin or Johnny McGraw, to start the game, but unfortunately they had to go with 10 game winner Chief Chouneau. The Scarlets went with veteran "Gulfport Jack" Ryan and in the end, experience was all they needed. They thrashed the Colts 21-2 in the playoff to proceed on to their 9th World Series in 12 years! Elsewhere around the league, the Brooklyn Perfectos decided to try young pitcher Babe Ruth as an outfielder in mid-May. He was so successful that he will most likely never pitch again. In the 11th, the Maroons' defense broke down, allowing 2 unearned runs and handing the win to the Scarlets. 10/3/1918 - GAME 2 SCARLETS 1 - MAROONS 3 Bingo Demoss led off St. Louis' 3rd inning rally with a homer and Harry Heilmann followed soon after with an RBI double, enough to tie the series up at one game apiece before they head back to Cincinnati. 10/5/1918 - GAME 3 MAROONS 1 - SCARLETS 4 Frank Allen pitched a complete game 5 hitter to give Cincy their second win of the Series.
