Fair enough - obviously I'm not in favour of piracy but I'm not going to rant and rave about it, it won't make any difference to anyone who is pirating the game and I do understand the problems with economic differences around the world.

We're well aware that for every legitimate copy of the game their is probably around 10 pirated versions in existance, this is a real shame from our point of view because if we'd even half that extra revenue we'd be able to improve our games faster and also probably have been able to expand into other sports long before our adoption of Riz/EHM:FE last year.

We are looking to establish distribution worldwide over time and release products with sensible price points in various regions, these will obviously contain only the native language for the region involved (to stop grey imports etc.).

I doubt any would be as cheap as $2 however ....

I think this will be a good move, although I'm very leary about the MLB license if it happens. However, I'm getting pretty excited thinking of a 2d field, Championship Manager type news etc... Since CM and OOTP are my two favorite games I'm sure I'll be happy next year. Hey Marc, how about the inside scoop on Football Manager? It's looking fantastic! Will it be out by the holidays? Hi. As a long-time Championship Manager player, and a new convert to OOTP, I'm excited about this merger.

I'd like to assure everyone that SI are not an evil empire, but a hands-on personable bunch of people who provide excellent support for the players of their games, and are always willing to listen to suggestions and act on them. The quality of the games over the years, and the massive improvements over time has been exemplary.

One question: Why are MLB so weird about licensing?

There seem to be no restrictions to putting real-life players, finances etc. into the Championship Manager games, and that's in countries where football is, has been, and always will be the No. 1 sport.

Surely it would be in MLB's interests to license these games with as few restrictions as possible to increase their market both in the US and internationally ...

Or is this the case of the MLBPA being absurd and nonsensical again?

From what I understand from brief discussion with people who've been involved in such things in recent years they were very restrictive in the past, but have lightened up a little recently.

Similar concerns were voiced by the EHM Hockey community when we first indicated that we were looking at an NHL licence, however we managed to obtain one of those without placing any restrictions on the game itself ... I am hopeful that a similar situation can be achieved for Baseball.

Obviously if this isn't possible then its something that we'll have to make a hard decision upon, if that is the case then Markus will obviously have a huge say in things as it is after all his game ...

It seems there are a good group of folks with their hands in OOTP7, so I am excited about the future. Personally, I don't much care about MLB liscensing. Really, what extra does it lend? We can already get accurate roster files, logos, and pictures. Sure it would be convenient to have them already included, but I agree with the others that I'd rather not see a liscense if it imposes ANY restrictions!

Like Ed Rooney I'm a CM addict and after living in Atlanta for the last year have become a baseball addict too. I've only recently purchased OOTP6 and am loving it.

I certainly can't wait for SI and OOTP's first release and hope they'll live up to my expectations based on CM. Those of you unfamiliar with the CM series should feel good about the franchise being in safe hands.

I just hope that the 3d match engine from the latest versions of CM will be transferred in to the new baseball game. I would have thought it lends itself perfectly to baseball.

Marc - can you confirm you're going to include this or is it too early to say?

And in terms of editing, CM had a whole host of editing options as well as the ability to run a game with made-up names rather than the real players which made it very interesting.

I hope that CM (or Football Manager - FM - at its going to be called) can benefit from the knowledge sharing too. On-line leagues would be a massive developemnt move for FM.

Late 2005 already seems a long way off! I hope SI can keep us updated with screenshots and features along the way.

Marc - can you post a link that shows the 3d engine in action or is that the property of Eidos now.

The one that recreated the famous goals (ie Gazza vs Scotland in Euro 96) was fantastic.

From what I have read, it seems that leagues will transfer over quite well. The only thing that won't is history stuff which don't matter much to a league going forward.

Well, I don't know about in general, but since OOTP has never had a license and has always been 100% customizable, the beauty of the game is that there are roster packs out there of real life players made by the community and you can always choose to play a fictional universe created by yourself (or download someone else's). Furthermore, the flexibility of OOTP means you can play historical seasons from the past....roster packs are everywhere.

That's exactly what Mogul did when they had the license. The League Editor had a section for a number where you typed in 'Dollars per Point'. The default was 100,000 I think but you could set it to '1'.

There was also a text edit box that said "points". If you changed it to dollars, and the news stories and scouting reports changed. Finally there was something called "prefix". If you typed '$' in there then "1,000,000" turned into "$1,000,000". It's really a pretty easy work around and if you want minor leaguers you can wait for roster sets like we do now.
