Plague !!! 1916 Presidential Election: Vote Now!

Please vote for who should be the next President of the United States. I have listed their platforms and photos for your perusal. I have also linked their names to their Wikipedia page (or another page with vital info on their actual life).

THE CANDIDATES

REPUBLICAN:
PRESIDENT: HENRY CABOT LODGE - Senator from Pennsylvania
VICE PRESIDENT: ROBERT M. LA FOLLETTE, SR. - U.S. Senator from Wisconsin

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Lodge - 56, La Follette - 51
  • Favors a quick end to U.S. involvement in the Global War
  • Believes that the Mexican front should receive the full force of the U.S. military to end it as soon as possible.
  • Lodge is current chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee
  • Considers U.S. to be a role model of liberty in other nations, but not responsible for the affairs of other states. Despite this view, he is not an extreme isolationist, favoring ongoing development of an increased army and navy, military strength being a prerequisite to diplomatic power.
  • Professes that the United States needs to maintain outlying territories in order to preserve the domestic security
  • Supports the continuation of the gold standard
  • Lodge is a noted historian, having written biographies of George Washington and Daniel Webster
  • Many feel that the choice of La Follette was merely fto balance the ticket. He is considered to be the polar opposite of Lodge, championing such progressive ideas as a minimum wage, worker's compensation, women's suffrage and progressive taxation.
  • La Follette is most noted for his crusade against pork barrel projects.
  • Though close friends with Lodge, Chief Justice Roosevelt has publicly declared La Follette to be a "skunk who should be hanged" for his vehement opposition to the Global War.

DEMOCRAT:
PRESIDENT: JAMES MIDDLETON COX - Governor of Ohio
VICE PRESIDENT: THEODORE GILMORE BILBO - U.S. Senator from Mississippi

CAMPAIGN PLATFORM
  • Ages: Cox - 46, Bilbo - 39
  • Cox is a former teacher (at age 16!) and newspaperman who is an ardent supporter of educational reform and the defense of free speech.
  • Believes that the United States has a duty to not only serve as an example to other nations, but also a mission to end international injustice.
  • As Governor of Ohio, he was instrumental in passing legislation granting women's suffrage on a state level in 1913.
  • Supports the creation of a "coalition of states" to prevent war through collective security, settle disputes between countries through negotiation diplomacy and improve global welfare
  • Strong proponent of worker's compensation
  • Has championed the idea of a National Council on the Sciences. He believes that the United States should be at the forefront of technological development which will be the catalyst for advances in all other forums.
  • Supports the creation of a National Rescue and Relief Board modeled after his controversial Ohio Conservancy Act of 1914.
  • Senator Bilbo was a surprise choice for the ticket, having only 2 years under his belt in his first term in the Senate. Most believe he was added to garner support from the Deep South. At only 5' 2", he already has a reputation for being a fiery outspoken orator who has been nicknamed "The Man". Despite that, he is somewhat of an unknown.
  • Bilbo was also a teacher in his early years. He supports a universal education and a separate but equal doctrine.
  • Bilbo has been portrayed as a champion of the poor white Southern man. He often rails against poverty, alcoholism, child labor, inadequate roads, unsafe factories, epidemic diseases, and crowded city housing.
  • During his 1914 campaign for the U.S. Senate, he made a comment to a state senator from Yazoo City. The man was insulted, and during the ensuring skirmish the man broke his cane over Bilbo's head.
  • To date, Bilbo's main pet project has been the creation of an international highway system.

Though the Populist Party still exists, Senator Watson's involvement in the leadup to the Leo Frank lynching in 1915 has resulted in a massive backlash against the party. They are no longer considered a major party, since a number of Senators and Congressmen have already switched to the Democratic Party.

Too bad Lodge & Bilbo couldn't run together.... But Bilbo sure looks a lot older than 39!

Yeah, but I would have rather seen Frodo get the nomination...

I'm sure the picture is actually from the late 30's when he was much more prominent. I couldn't find many pics of the appropriate size.

Keep them votes coming. The candidates are neck and neck!

The La Follette family were strong advocates of the Populist movement, so it's interesting that you have one as a Republican ticket.

That being said, I have to go the Wisconsin vote.

Are you sure you're not confusing the Progressive Party with the Populist Party?

According to everything I've read, La Follette was a Republican and part of the Progressive movement, a liberal spinoff of the Republican Party. In fact, he actually ran for the Republican Party nomination in 1912. Check out his Wikipedia page...his name is linked to it above.

The Populist Party was associated with the Southern Democrats, namely Tom Watson and James K. Vardaman, who helped with the resurgence of the KKK in our reality in the early 20's.

You're right, I was confusing the two parties. I do remember Wisconsin went Progressive when one of the LaFollettes ran for President, though I don't recall which one.

I haven't gotten it right since I voted for Goebel in 1904. I guess my plans for Bilbo will have to take a different road
