Is there any point to this, and if so what is it?

It lets the other GM's know what players you have that are available, tradeable or that you're willing to listen to offers for.

It's really annoying that computer GM's don't use this feature.

Try placing your best player in that box.

the only time I've seen the AI use it is during the trade deadline other than that I'm the only team that has players year round on the trade block

I've had players inquired about by the computer teams when placed on the trade block, It is possible that it could be used a bit more often or effectively but it does work.

I mean that the computer should put players on the trade block too. That way you can click on trade block and see who the computer GM's are trying to get rid of, so maybe you can bring in a veteran on the cheap before the deadline, that sort of thing
