I've been trying to play OOTP5 since downloading the free version, and I get crashes and problems with the game every time I play it. And, sorry folks, it has nothing to do with my system, because I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop with ideal setup, and I have never had a game crash before. I play Football Manager 2006 all the time, and I'm able to get very good performance from all of my applications. I've never had a crash with a piece of software on this machine.
However, I encounter crashes of various types every time I play OOTP5, and it has led me to reconsider my plans to buy OOTPBM 2006. Among the various errors I've encountered are some kind of music.dll error after a game was just completed, and a crash after trying to exit a game in progress by using the "quit game" button. I can't use the 3D graphics either, even with a fully updated video driver. I had OOTP5 on another machine a few years ago, and I never encountered any problems. But now that I'm playing the game on a machine with better specs, it is unplayable. That makes no sense whatsoever. This has led me to conclude that it's probably not a good idea to buy OOTPBM 2006. I'd rather not risk the frustration and wasted time, because I'm not interested in wild goose chases to track down reasons why a particular game is the only program that has ever failed to function properly on my machine. This laptop has been running perfectly for years. I'm just shocked that I would encounter these problems in the final version of a game. Unfortunately, I have to give up on OOTP5, because I can't even get through a single game without a crash that whipes out the box score and causes me to lose the accumulated stats. And it looks like I'll be giving up on OOTPBM 2006 before it's even released. I just can't trust that the software will work properly on my machine, especially when I can't even play out a single game on an older version without crashes. |

Bear in mind that OOTP 2006 is being completely re-written from the ground up.
For what it's worth, the sound issue has been a well-documented issue for years, one which Markus was simply never able to solve. Most of us that have run into it have disabled the in-game sound, and the problem goes away. Heck, I didn't think the sound was much to write home about anyways. Can't explain the 3D thing, other than asking fairly obvious questions like "is your display set to 32-bit color? Is DirectX up-to-date? What if you roll your video driver back a version or two?" Remember, OOTP5 was written in, what, 2003? It's entirely possible that changes to the video driver may have rendered it incompatible with OOTP5. Last edited by eriqjaffe; 04-29-2006 at 10:23 PM. |

Here is the latest ... In most attempts to play out a game, the software slows to a crawl after an inning or two. The audio becomes choppy, the play-by-play suddenly takes 15 to 45 seconds to render each line, and the buttons for selecting managerial options become unresponsive for up to two minutes. The game then slows down so much that it essentially freezes the machine. I cannot exit the software or even bring up my task manager to try and close it down. I then have to unplug my power adapter and then remove the battery from the laptop just to shut down the machine and get back to normal. Absolutely NOTHING else other than Windows XP, my wireless internet monitor, and my printer software is running in the background. I run a hardware firewall and do manual virus scans, so there is no virus protection program or any other utility using up additional RAM or processing power. The only time that I got through a full game, I got the dll error and a crash which lost everything. In another attempt to play out a game, I got the crash when trying to quit to the main menu. I've also had a couple of crashes while doing league setups. Given that there is no previous track record of any problems with ANY software on this machine, including programs dating back as far as OOTPB5, I just don't understand how this could be happening. It's inexplicable. Now, if anyone wants to be constructive, feel free to offer up comments or suggestions. Otherwise, keep your rude thoughts to yourself. |

If you read my previous posting, you should have seen my statement that the game worked perfectly on my old machine, and now it's unplayable on a newer machine with better specs. Anyway, if you have something constructive to offer, then please do. Otherwise, your immature comments and insults will be ignored. |

Disable the 3D and sound. The sound is just messed and and when I disabled the 3D the game ran much smoother. You could also just have a corrupted saved game.

Well...if you arent trying to simply badmouth the game...then why didnt you email Markus and try to get the game working rather than post that long and emotional and disingenuous post?

1. The sound bug is well-documented. Just turn the sound off, and, magic, it's fixed.
2. Why on earth are you still playing OOTP5? You should be playing OOTP 6.51a like a real man instead of OOTP5 like a beggar. 3. No one is allowed to gripe like that about a free game. If you don't like free software, delete it and move on, but because you didn't pay anything for it you don't have the right to gripe about it. 4. This thread does not belong in the OOTP2006 forum.

He can gripe only if the software somehow damages his system (which it won't).
But I can understand why he wouldn't buy 6.5, considering in just a month this new beautiful version will be released.

Several thoughts:
-From what you've written atleast some of the issues are the "sound bug"(already stated, but just to confirm it). Turn the sound off and those crashes are taken care of. The version slated to come out this spring has NO sound so those issues are not present. -A "new" system means one thing, it is new. It does not mean that you'll be able to run every piece of software that you have or want more efficiently or even at all(I've experienced it so I know). -Related to the last point, you are talking about a game that is atleast 3 years old so it doesn't surprise me that there maybe issues with it. -We try and test our software to the best of our ability, but given the almost limitless number of possible configurations, PC setups, etc there are certainly issues which even the most diligent testing schemes will allow to us to catch. I'm sorry that I've probably only provided a small amount of help but maybe some perspective as far as why this maybe happening, hope you get this issue resolved.
