1914 WORLD SERIES

10/6/1914 - GAME 1 SCARLETS 3 - MAROONS 1

Christy Mathewson contributed both on the mound and at the plate to help the Scarlets to a Game 1 win. Baldy Louden was able to get 3 hits off of Mathewson, but the rest of the Maroons were only able to combine for 2 singles.

10/7/1914 - GAME 2 SCARLETS 4 - MAROONS 2

Doc Wiley went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, helping Cy Falkenberg defeat St. Louis, putting the Scarlets up 2 games to zip as they head back to Cincy. 3 errors certainly didn't help the Maroons cause.

10/9/1914 - GAME 3 MAROONS 1 - SCARLETS 3

Doc Wiley again knocked in the winning run with 2 hits and 2 RBI and Beany Jacobson held St. Louis to 4 hits, putting the Scarlets one game away from a sweep and their 4th championship.

10/10/1914 - GAME 4 MAROONS 1 - SCARLETS 2

Bernie Duffy held Cincy scoreless for 8.1 innings, but Scarlet fever would not be held back as the home team rallied for 2 runs off of closer Wheezer Dell to win the Series in a sweep and claim their 4th crown.

Love what you've done, especially Arthur becoming king (he's a historical favorite of mine...I even have a duplicate of the uniform he usually wore).

Off to sign up a player now!

  • February 26 - The Papal Conclave convenes in Avignon, France. Due to the war, only 47 cardinals are able to attend, many of whom were ordained by Pope Solomon I after the Schism of 1908.
  • March 12 - Cardinal Felix von Hartmann, Archbishop of Cologne, Germany is elected pope. He chooses the name Leo XIII because of his admiration for the actions of Leo XII against political agitation and secular rebellion. His choice is apparently influenced by the acts of the P.S.U., who have been increasing their guerrilla tactics since the death of Pope Solomon I.

Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee's fleet came to the aid of the Mexican Navy, engaging and sinking four U.S. armored cruisers off th coast of Chile. Until that point, the United States Navy had dominated the Pacific coast of the Americas. Despite the defeat, it is believed that Mexico is on the verge of negotiating terms of surrender.

    Admiral Maximilian von Spee

  • December 8 - Battle of the Falkland Islands von Spee's force attempts a raid on the British coaling station at Stanley in the Falkland Islands, unaware that the previous month the United States had sent four modern fast battlecruisers to avenge the defeat at Coronel. There were also five British cruisers, HMS Carnarvon, HMS Cornwall, HMS Kent, HMS Bristol and HMS Glasgow, stationed at the Stanley naval base. In the ensuing combat, Spee's flagship, SMS Scharnhorst, together with SMS Gneisenau, SMS Nürnberg and SMS Leipzig are all lost, together with some 2,200 German sailors, including Admiral von Spee and his two sons.

$5 a day sounds a little high, but then again the war has been going on forever with no end in sight, with corresponding disruptions in trade, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were an inflation problem.

Speaking of which (and moving away from quibbles-- huzzay!), the DHRV seems to be suffering a series of reverses (though... why are the /Russians/ in Belgium?). Is the war entering its final stages? It's gotta be hard for everyone in Europe to sustain the war effort at this point.

Metsgeek, this is a lot of fun, as your dynasties always are.

I might have missed this as I caught up on your thread, but how do you decide which historical figures outside the baseball world were victims of the haemorrhagic flu?

That was an actual event that I got from Wikipedia, except it was Ford. Since Henry Ford died, Hudson Motors was substituted.

The Russians are the opponents of the D.H.R.V. They've been attacking by sea and they hold the northern coast of Europe. The war should be in its last throes......it's been going on for ~8-9 years now.

I wish I could make a map to show the changes, but I don't have any program that I could use to do so.

I look at the list of births on the Wikipedia page for that year and randomly choose. Sometimes I kill off people whose absence I know would have a huge impact on the world (Ronald Reagan, Adolf Hitler.....). Others I just kill because they annoy me.

1915 Prospect Watch: VICTOR HURKA

This strapping young man of Hungarian descent should be ready for the big leagues right away, and he may need the salary to support his large appetites. Rumor has it that this 6'4", 250 lb galoot has been known to down a 32 ounce steak, 3 baked potatoes and 12 bottles of beer in one sitting, then go out and play a full game with no ill effects. The way he attacks the ball at the plate and on the field is comparable to the way he attacks a plate of food....with gusto and unabashed enthusiasm. He'll either take off like a shooting star when he reaches the bigs, or burn himself out like a candle lit at both ends. Either way, though, fans are certain to remember him.

The really scary thing is, that actually looks like my grandad too, and my family came from Eastern Europe. I'd also like to add this is the first player I ever got to see play in one of your leagues, so I can't wait to see how he does!

Ouch, Chicago? Looks like ole Victor's got some work to do whipping these boys into shape!

My wife is Hungarian and we're actually going to Budapest in a couple of months, so I recognized the word hurka. Not sure if that is your ancestry, but if it is, do you know what Hurka means?

Can't say that I do, but my family, in real life, is from the Czech Reupblic and we do have our name on the Ellis Island wall, but if you know what Hurka means, that would be great, since it is my last name and everything.

Metsgeek- You cruelty knows no bounds. Millions of Star Wars fans will be forced to watch the god-only-knows replacement for Alec Guiness. For shame. If you kill of George Lucas we'll know you are just anti-Star Wars.

Hurka is a very popular type of pork sausage in Hungary.

There are two varieties: one made with blood and one made with liver. I prefer the liver sausage, but they are both delicious. Perhaps your family were butchers or sausagemakers.

1915 FINAL STANDINGS

The Continental League was quite stratified in 1915, with 4 teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania (Cincy, Cleveland, Pittsburgh & Philly) duking it out all season long for the top spot. Ultimately, though, the Scarlets made it to their 5th World Series in a row and their 7th in 9 year. The second tier was populated by the two teams from the Big Apple, 15-20 behind the top group. At the bottom were the Colts of Chicago and the recently hapless Boston Beaneaters. The Scarlets are quite accustomed to having the top pitching staff in the majors, but as they head into the postseason, two of their starters, George Merritt and Beany Jacobsen, will not see action due to injury. This could be their downfall.

Two years removed from their 1913 crown, the Louisville Colonels have returned to the postseason after faltering last year, but this team is quite a bit different from the squad that surprised the Cincy juggernauts last time. Their offense is quite a bit weaker, with their top fulltime batter being Ray Demmitt, who had a .275 batting average. However, their rookie Ken Williams did have an impressive .339 mark in the half season he played. They have two aces in Bullet Joe Rogan and Smokey Joe Wood who will certainly help them compete if the offense can hang in there, and don't forget about the best closer in the game, J.C. Bernard with his 40 saves. If he makes it into the game, consider the door slammed in your face.
