A Second Chance

"What did you do this time?" the trainer asked the ballplayer.

"I twisted my knee shagging flyballs."

That's what it had come to for the 36 year old ballplayer. Twisting his knee shagging flyballs before a game. Talk about coming down like a meteor after soaring amongst the stars.

Yes, things have been tough for Ken Griffey late in his career. Going from one of the perennial power hitters in the game to being known as somebody who could break a foot if he stepped wrong.

"I should have taken this game more seriously instead of relying on my natural ability," Griffey thought to himself. "Maybe I wouldn't be in the shape I'm in today."

I agree.

"Who's there?"

I'm a great fan, though you have been stinking the joint up lately.

"Tell me something I don't know."

It pains me to see you in this shape and that roided up freaks have taken your rightful place as Aaron's challenger. Which is why I have an offer for you?

"Jesus Christ! My friends told me everybody was doing it, and now 17 years later, this **** starts happening!"

Whoa, okay, just chill. Just chill out dude.

"What's happening to me?"

Just call it divine intervention.

"Are you God?"

Hell no! Anyways, about that offer. What if I were to tell you that I could send you back in time and give you another shot at Henry Aaron? Would you be interested?

Griffey thought long and hard about this, but he knew what the answer was. "Yes, but what's the catch."

You have to sell your soul.

"WHAT?!?!?!"

Hahaha...the sell your soul trick...get's them everytime. Actually, there is a catch. Once you go back in time, you can never return to where you originally started. So if fate deals you a ****ty hand ten years earlier, well then you're out of luck. That, and I can't control Jose Canseco's love for needles and ass.

Griffey got up off the trainer's table. "I'm ready."

Good.

"So where are we going?"

Why, we're going to party like it's 1989 baby!

And thus, the Adventures of Ken Griffey Junior and the Invisible Fan begin.

So I'm guessing you're putting him up for the draft? I sense Darryl Strawberry's ghost and Walter watching this one.

I'm going to start opening day, 1989. So Griffey will start with the Mariners. What happens beyond that though......

"I knew I shouldn't have listened to you!"

Ken Griffey was furious. He had every right to be as he paced the cheap hotel in Podunk, WA.

Hey, I said I would give you a second chance. I didn't say I was going to give you a free ride.

"But you never said anything about having to go to AAA."

I didn't expect the Mariners to pick up Lance Johnson off the waiver wire and send you to AAA.

"Lance ****ing Johnson! What did he ever do in his career?"

Well, he did have a 14 year career and was a career .291 hitter. But then that was in your previous life. Now he's known as the guy who just took super prospect Ken Griffey's starting spot.

"But Lance Johnson?"

And the Mariners are looking brilliant, since he's hitting .319 and has 11 stolen bases in 21 games. You just hit .237 with 1 homer and a .678 OPS.

"Lance Johnson....."

Cheer up Griffey. You just keep murdering the ball down in the minors, and they'll call you up....eventually. Besides, you have a nice rookie card. Though maybe you should smile. Nobody likes a sour puss.

What's going on Ken?

"It's you again. Go away."

Still blaming me over this little detour.

"You're damn right."

And I suppose this would be the wrong time to tell you that your replacement Lance Johnson is hitting .363, which is second in the AL, and he has 21 stolen bases, first in the AL.

Thanks for the props. I'm also excited about this.

And now, another update or two before I'm off to bed.

Congrats Griffey, you made it back to the majors.

"Only because Edgar Martinez broke his cheekbone."

You have to take advantage of your opportunities.

"And I'm only starting against right handers. And, I'm starting in RIGHT field. I've been a center fielder my entire life. I've never even played right field."

Are you always this pessimistic? At least you're in the majors, and you had a good month.

Looks like you are going to stick around.

"But I'm still not playing center field. In fact, I've only played 11 games in center this year."

You complain too much. Just because your daddy played for the Big Red Machine doesn't mean teams will just bow down and worship you.

Well, you're starting in center. Happy now?

"Still not against lefties."

Which is amazing considering that you have been hitting lefties better than right handers.

"But we're in the pennant race!"

Which is also amazing. Mike Schooler sure is schoolin' people in the closers slot with 23 saves and a 2.73 ERA. Plus, who can forget Tom Niedenfuer and Keith Comstock having good years.

You guys sure did choke in that game.

"Now is not the time."

I know you guys were playing the A's, but 16-2. Jesus Christ, you got raped in that one game playoff.

"Shut up."

16 runs on 18 hits. Boy, you guys sure showed them. Javier hit two homers, "Roid Brother" McGwire hit two, Dave Parker of all people hit two. About the only guy your pitchers could get out was "Roid Father" Canseco.

"Hey, I went two for three with a run batted in."

WHO CARES?!? You lost 16-2. You just got ass raped on national television by a bunch of guys who love to shoot up each other in the ass.

"Why are you in such a bad mood?"

I lost a bet with one of my colleagues. Strawberry won the NL Batter of the Month Award this month.
