Talk Sports Mock Draft: 9. Detroit Lions *ON THE CLOCK*
ESPN is letting their fans vote on each team's draft selection in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft, and I thought it'd be a cool idea to put here in Talk Sports.
Right now, only the first 10 selections are scheduled to be done. However, I will continue doing this right up until draft day. (Polls cannot be closed after less than 24 hours, meaning each pick will take one day. From now on, I will reserve the right to close a poll in the event of lopsided voting. A 20-vote lead is considered the mercy rule, but if it seems over before that, I may throw the white flag earlier.) For each team posted, the poll will be open for 24 hours. At the end of that 24-hour span, the player with the most votes is that team's selection. Please vote based on what player you would select if you were that particular team. === 1. Houston Texans - RB Reggie Bush, USC 2. New Orleans Saints - OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia 3. Tennessee Titans - QB Matt Leinart, USC 4. New York Jets - DE Mario Williams, NC State 5. Green Bay Packers - LB AJ Hawk, Ohio State 6. San Francisco 49ers - TE Vernon Davis, Maryland 7. Oakland Raiders - QB Vince Young, Texas 8. Buffalo Bills - CB/S Michael Huff, Texas 9. Detroit Lions *ON THE CLOCK* 10. Arizona Cardinals === The draft board will be updated in each new thread following the closing of the poll. There is no "trade the pick" option! The purpose of this exercise is to create Talk Sports' mock draft. Regardless of speculation, how likely, or how smart it would be for a team to trade a draft pick -- that is not an option. We are going by the current, official draft order.

I think they'll take a WR.

If there was a receiver on your list that was in the 6'3 vicinity, I would have picked him. Since there isn't, I'm going with Ngata. They need defense the most. They may very well take Cutler, but they shouldn't. |

They desperately need OL. Justice is the best OL left. Take him.

They should and will take Cutler, I think.

Look at what Carson Palmer became under the tutilage of Jon Kitna, who is now in Detroit. And look at Kurt Warner, Trent Green, and Marc Bulger. They were all bloomed under new Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz. McCown has a good opportunity to succeed in the situation he's in. And with Shaun Rogers and [old and overrated] Dan Wilkinson at DT, they don't need a player there. I'll pick Tye Hill, a corner with a lot of upside and a lot less question marks surrounding his character than Jimmy Williams.

Why are people so high on Cutler? I'm not flaming all of you guys that have picked him highly but have you watched him play or are you just listening to the idiot talking heads on ESPN?
I saw him play 3 or 4 times last season and he was a solid QB but never in a million years did I think he would get this hyped going into the draft. The main reason Cutler shouldn't get drafted highly is because that dumbass Mark Schlereth thinks he's the best QB in the draft. Schlereth also thinks the Dolphins need a QB more than any team in the league because Culpepper "may not be ready" for the season opener. Cutler was a nice college QB, but he didn't show me any signs of being elite, especially at the next level. |

Personally, I believe they should get Omar Jacobs from BGSU in the 4th round if they really want a QB. I wouldn't be surprised if Jay Cutler turns into Aaron Rodgers, and falls to the end of the 1st round.

Dammit bailey....I thought I would be all against-the-grain here and take Tye Hill. I would say drafting Cutler would be a mistake, but won't be surprised in the least if they do draft him. Ngata's an "okay" option here, but Rogers is a solid DT and even if Wilkinson is old or you have a mediocre 2nd DT, it's not as important defensively as having a guy like Hill who could probably start right away.

bump for the tight vote.
I'm still very surprised that Cutler is in a position to win.

In the event of a tie, all players tied will be thrown into a 4-hour vote.

Cutler has more arm strength than either QB, more smarts than either QB, and is a little below Leinart in terms of accuracy.
Cutler played for one of the WORSTTTTTT major conference teams in the nation. Leinart and Young were surrounded by 100x the talent. I will say I am skeptical as well, because he's a player you dream on. He's a bigger risk than Young, IMO, because with VY, you kind of know his weaknesses. Cutler looks so promising because of what we *could* be. Detroit should give him a shot. |

1. Three years in a row the Lions drafted a WR in the third round. Granted, had Rogers stayed healthy, we might look back on that first year as a great pick. And both Williams could still become great players. But they've went offense three years running. And they haven't plugged a number one guy into their line-up in two years. Drafting a quarterback here gives them a second stringer at best, likely a third stringer. That's a wasted pick. 2. If Eli Manning was available here, you pick him if you're Detroit because the question marks are so few and far between. He's almost assuredly going to be a good quarterback, and having him sit second or third string for a season isn't a big deal. But Cutler is a risky pick. Having a huge risk as your third string, first round quarterback... that's asking for trouble. 3. Besides Kitna and McCown, the Lions have Dan Orlovsky who they drafted in the fifth round last season. Cutler and Orlovsky are mirror images of each other in a lot of ways: they're both 6' 4'', they're both in the 225 range, and they both played for crappy schools in big conferences (Vandy and UConn respectively). The upside for Cutler is 10x higher than Orlovsky, but the risk is also 10x higher. And by adding Cutler, that almost assuredly kicks Orlovsky to the curb. Statistically, how's this? Orlovsky's career numbers are better, or at the very least similar to, Cutler's. While I understand numbers aren't necessarily the best gauge, I think there are enough similarities between the two players that keep the less risky, cheaper Orlovsky on the roster as the third quarterback has a better long-term benefit than putting a would-be more expensive Cutler in that slot.
