And the Twins non tendered this guy. What were they thinking. I was a big Ortiz fan when he was with the twins. I'm a red sox fan and I remember looking at the free agent list and thinking, the only guy that I want the sox to sign is Ortiz. He's been even better than I thought he would.

He's certainly the most similar looking player to Big Papi, though.

The story of how the Sox picked him up after he was waived is pretty interesting. Apparently, Ortiz went back to the DR and bumped into Pedro in a restaurant. Ortiz told Pedro he was released and Pedro called up Theo. Theo sent Dave Jauss down to scout Ortiz briefly (Dave is now in LA, part of Grady's staff after being an advance scout for the Sox for a few years) and the Sox signed him.

For some reason, I recall reading speculation or quotes that led me to believe that James had written some report where he named Ortiz a good person to target b/c of his ability to take advantage of Fenway, but I could be making that up.

I also remember reading somewhere that after the 2002 season James wrote a report for the Sox FO that stated that Ortiz and Brad Fullmer were of nearly equal value going forward. That always makes me chuckle.

Both Pedro and Manny went to Theo seperatly and pushed for Ortiz.
